OT - Spike Dykes passes away
RIP.

Truly one of the last of an era. The first SWC football kickoff event I attended back in 1988 gave me an initiation into his hysterical sense of humor. And he was a pretty good coach too.

And by the way, he attended Rice for one year in the 1950's but left after a year because as he said, 'Rice did not offer the academic challenge for which I was seeking, so I transferred to San Angelo Junior College.'

I hear his son is a pretty good coach, too. He seems to have lived a very fulfilled life.

My contact with Spike goes back to the 60's. He coached at Coahoma and Big Spring in those early days. My Dad was a public school administrator and was partially instrumental in hiring him at Big Spring and always was very complimentary toward Spike. He was a good coach and a gentleman. Old School. In the best sense of the term.

RE: OT - Spike Dykes passes away
he was in our 5some at the annual football reunion golf tourney at Wildcat last April. Really nice funny guy and just as country as Bum Phillips. Had a big chaw of terbacky, which he was drooling right down on his golf shirt. Very entertaining. He looked very old at the time, so his passing doesn't surprise me, RIP.
(he came at the invite of Larry Hofer, who was an asst coach on his staff at Tech yrs ago).
