If we don't beat Memphis this year....
...I don't know if we ever will.

In the past week, four players, three of which are starters, have transferred, including the two sons of former UAB dropout Keelon Lawson. They are transfering to Kansas.

One player today announced his departure by calling in on a radio show.

Tubby is hemorrhaging players. Only two current players return to next years team. they have Buck Johnson's kid coming in, but otherwise, not much. They just got someone to switch his previous committment from a D2 school.

We should win easily, but unfortunately their name remains Memphis and recent history shows we can't beat anyone with a Memphis jersey on.

On the other hand, if Ehsan needs an experienced assistant coach on the bench, Tubby Smith may be available soon.

Can it be said that Tubby Smith's career trajectory is only slightly less negative than Mike Davis'? Smith has gone from UKY (SEC) to Minn.(BIG), to Texas Tech (BIG12) to Memphis (AAC). If his next stop is a G5 school's assistant position, will he ever be able to recover?

Tubby's career trajectory is more parabolic than Mike's:

1. Tulsa
2. Georgia (up)
3. Kentucky (up)
4. Minnesota (down)
5. Texas Tech (down)
6. Memphis (about even or slightly up)

All of his schools have been in several different states. Where has he been employed long enough to draw state retirement (if that should be a factor in his lifestyle)?

Tubby Smith left Minnesota and Texas Tech on his own terms, leaving the program in better shape than he found it. He is not going to be a G5 Assistant. That was a joke.

He is not succeeding at Memphis for three reasons:

1. They are facing actual competition in the AAC rather than ruling in CUSA.

2. He has refused to play the games that he needs to play to win at Memphis. Josh Pastner gave Keelon Lawson a job as an assistant to get his sons to Memphis. Tubby demoted him and refused to let him keep the assistant job...because Tubby wanted to bring his son on as assistant.
As a result, Lawson took his sons and left.

3. He's in his 60's and no longer interested in beating the bushes and recruiting at a high level. Some may argue that taking the Memphis job his version of retiring.

When you are losing Top 100 players and not recruiting replacements, you are not going to be very poplar in Memphis.

#2 is also an NCAA violation...correct? Should the NCAA choose to enforce it.

I doubt tubby is too concerned about retirement.

There was some kind of loophole. Pastner got it cleared with the NCAA before the hire.

Keelon Lawson was just on the radio again with Pastner. His version of the story was that Dedric Lawson wanted to go to Kentucky, but "sacrificed" for his dad and chose Memphis so his Keelon would get the chance to coach at the next level. 03-lmfao That's got to hurt for Memphis fans.

I think we should be fortunate that pappa Lawson didn't remain at UAB & the sons didn't sign with UAB.

Parrish and other Memphis media members have made it their mission to run Tubby out of town.

Smith has not been very media-friendly and is not as accommodating as Pastner was, so they are making it their mission to destroy him. I admit that he is not trying hard to recruit and seems to be in semi-retirement, but the fact that he refused to go along with the Keelon Lawson deal is a sign of integrity. The problem is if you are going to do that, you have to recruit replacements, which he hasn't.
