a fellow Cubs fan04-cheers

started watching them in 1984 as a kid, fell in love with them that year (my dad side of family are generational Cubs fans...my late grandmother told me about listening to the famous Homer in the Gloamin' game on the radio in 1938). Yes I cried when they lost to the Padres that year in the NLCS. Sandberg was my hero growing up. Cried again in 1989 lol. Don't even want to discuss 2003.

But they FINALLY did it. I was thrilled just to win the pennant. The WS to me was icing on the cake. That's what being a lifelong Cubs fan does to you lol.

Go Cubs go!

My dad grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina. There really wasn't a team for the area at the time and he somehow adopted the Cubs. No idea why really, but when I was growing up the Cubs were on WGN national every day. Honestly until middle school they were on TV more than the Reds were...and they were on about as much until the WGN national deal got more limited. The other thing about it was the Cubs were on when I would get home from school. I could get off the bus and turn on the Cubs game. It was great as a kid that was a fan of the team. If it weren't for WGN National I'd have probably ended up just adopting the Reds despite my dad's rooting interest (as I'm pretty die hard for the other local teams UC and the Bengals).

The world series was glorious, but the Cubs have given me more joy (and some heartache) as a franchise than I think most Cubs haters realize. The Cubs had a stretch of playoff births in the early 2000s (with the one we all remember against Florida). They did it again in the late 2000s, one of the most fun seasons clinching the division in Cincinnati in front of 15,000 Cubs fans at least who I swear all rolled to bar to celebrate after. It was a great time. The theo rebuilt has been remarkable. If anyone is interested, he gives a great interview on Pardon My Take talking about his philosophy. So many hate on Sabermetrics, but listen to someone who uses it talk. It's not about numbers being everything, it's about using it as a tool and finding market inefficiencies. You don't ignore all the other stuff. He gives some good insight into why he built the Cubs the way he did (and honestly some of the luck involved).

The playoffs this year was incredible. Huge moments in each series. The comeback against the giants in the 9th and the amazing rally from the 3-1 series deficit stand out. What a way to finally see one of my teams break through for a championship. Almost blowing it then getting it done in extra innings. I was at RP McMurphys in Cincinnati watching it. It was a 50/50 Cubs/Indians split for much of the game, but a lot of Indians bailed. Everyone stayed a celebrated after despite how late the game went. Just a great moment. Glad to find another Cubs fan.

One thing about my fandom is that once my team is out of the playoffs or contention, I move on to the next sport. Quit watching March Madness after the loss to Ucla. Haven't watched a Super Bowl in a few years. Certainly haven't paid attention to a World Series for decades.

Don't really have any other favorite teams in leagues like the NBA, NHL, or any soccer league.

Huge Tim Duncan fan going back to WF days, so Spurs would be #2 NBA team, #2 NFL team would be the Patriots, and the Reds would be #2 MLB team.

14 minutes might be the record for amount of time it took u to hop on my jock. Haha. Stay jealous scrub :*

OK. Wannabee. Keep up your tired screed about UC football. Loser.

How is anything I said against uc football? I literally had no idea UC had a football team until I was a junior in high school.. that speaks volumes about their lack of competitiveness in the 90's, not my ignorance as you so wish. I went to a high school that had good athletics and I was consumed with them.

HEY! How about both of you SFTU? Now.

...unless you have something other than personal attacks to add...

WGN after school...that's what I watched too. I still remember the Unocal 76, United Airlines, Buick, and Bud Light commercials lol.

Also, in 84 WGN would begin and end the broadcast with Van Halen's Jump and so to this day when I hear that song, it's 1984 and I'm 12 again watching the Cubs.

Amazing how my list changed since college. For my first 25 years the Reds would have been a solid #1. Now I can't even put them on the list. Heck if I went down the list far enough OSU football is higher than the Reds now. And that's just for the tailgates and game day atmosphere.
