California politics are the most vicious in the country. From top to bottom, from every party and interest group.

Well, it's basically the 6th wealthiest country in the world, or something like that.

The more money you control, the more brutal the corruption and/or corrupt people coming after it.

I wonder if San Diego State had a hand in this? Maybe SDSU quietly told the Big West members, "You guys wanted SDSU before when we were leaving the MWC, and it might happen again someday if we find a place for our football team. If you want to have a chance to get SDSU in the future, then don't let UCSD into the Big West."

Don't sweat it. The WAC will invite them after a little convincing that it's not a bait and switch. The Big West schools, especially the UCs will be the bulk of their OOC schedule in every sport. I think once they get over the initial shock they will realize the WAC is transforming itself into a California focused conference. And they will get the benefits of D-I and playing UC's even in a different conference.

Was the UCSD vote to move up to D1 not contingent on the Big West invitation? Would they have to have another vote in order to accept an invitation from the WAC? And even if they don't, is it really worth it to move up just to hang out with Cal State Bakersfield and Cal Baptist?

SDSU leadership really wanted the Big East-Big West thing to work out. Even after Boise pulled out they were looking for ways to make it work.

Plus, the WAC is always one move away from another near-death crisis.

For UCSD, choosing between joining the WAC on the one hand or bypassing D-I altogether is like sitting in a greasy-spoon diner, looking at their limited menu, and knowing that whatever you choose will give you indigestion.

Well ... tough.

Big West was the "easy button" for DI. Didn't work out, because life rarely is easy. Ask Bakersfield. Ask NJIT, for cripessakes.

You grind, you work ... something good will happen.

Would a Chico State, East Bay State, Sonoma State or San Francisco State could garner enough votes for the Big West? They would be another schools up there with Cal-Davis and Cal-Poly in northern California.

It's almost so unpalatable a choice that you'd be tempted to walk out and just go grab a D3 corndog with your buddy, UCSC.

Sad to think SDSU wouldn't be above it all. Because they're SDSU.

And if you thought the politics between the Catholic schools back east were bad...

Absolutely not and they aren't even looking. So stop with the weird fantasy you have. None of those schools want to move up. And its Cal State East Bay, Cal Poly and UC Davis. Learn how those schools call themselves!

The WAC could shape up to be an excellent California-centric league if they can attract UC San Diego and Azusa Pacific into the fold. That's 4 in SoCal and then destination road trips to places like:

Seattle
Phoenix (GCU)
Salt Lake area (Utah Valley)
Kansas City (UMKC) --for now, MVC dominos could change this
and mid major legacy school NMSU

Well, there are these schools for destination.
West Texas A&M-Canyon/Amarillo
UTPB-Odessa
Angelo State-San Angelo
Colorado State-Pueblo-
Metro State-Denver
Dallas Baptist
Western Washington-Bellingham
Washburn-Topeka
Drury-Springfield, Missouri
UAFS-Fort Smith
East Bay State-Hayward-San Francisco bay area.
San Francisco State

Cal. Poly, SLO is nowhere near southern California area. They are closer to the San Francisco area which is northern California.

I don't think you understood what I meant by destination city. I'm talking about big urban centers with easy access to airports and fertile recruiting territory. Most of those D2 schools do not meet that definition.

SLO is roughly four hours from LA and four hours from SF. I think they rather correctly think of themselves as being on the boundary between NorCal and SoCal.

But for the purposes of geographic balance when it comes to a CA athletics conference I think the best you can hope for is an LA-metro-based South and an everything-north-of-LA North.
