The PAC could offer the PAC network at a discounted rate in Texas without upsetting their current TV deals as long as there is no existing language for a non-FB rate. Pay UCSD and Rice a full share of the PAC-N revenue but none of the tier 1 football revenue.

Rice would go FB independent with a PAC scheduling agreement (6 games/year). Rice would be invited full if they met certain performance/investment metrics AND Texas joined as well. Plant that PAC flag in Houston and make UT feel the heat from PAC and SEC incursion.

Odder things have happened. Like the Big 10 having Johns Hopkins and Notre Dame as affiliate members for 1 sport only.

Honestly, UC San Diego does pass the Pac-12 smell test in academics and geography. They see themselves as true peers to Stanford, UCLA, Cal and USC.

If the Pac can get over the football requirement, why not?

Since when is Cal Poly in northern California?

Everything north of LA County is Northern California 03-banghead

And everything north of San Francisco is Oregon.

Geographically, San Jose is in southern California. (just barely in the southern half, if you're measuring north-south distance)

Madera is exactly halfway in the state. There is symbolic pine tree on the north side and palm tree on the south along SR 99 at about PM 5.71.

Geography has nothing to do with this rejection. It's this idiotic idea that the BW will become a multi-bid league. That window closed years ago, and it will never reopen.

If I'm UCSD, I'd call the WAC and ask for an invite. But since I have no power, I guess UCSD will remain in D-II for a while, if not forever.

I think there are some in the Big West want to merge with MWC to create multi-bid access to the 68 team field. MWC does get multi-bids than the Big West. Big West does not want Cal-San Diego because they do not want a team in a duplicate market.

I thought that palm tree was in Stockton. I go through Madera every time I go to Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Monterey. I swear the only time I remember seeing the palm is when I go to Sac, and pass through Stockton which has been 16 years now.

Edit: it says it's in Madera, is it past the 152 exit? That would also explain me never seeing it in Madera

It is a known fact from news sources that some ADs was talking about this a few years ago. Which is why several Big West schools were talking about restarting or adding football to be part of the MWC merger.

It was in this time period of 2013 that the talks about football returning to three of the schools in the Big West. Long Beach State, Fullerton State and Northridge State

Before bashing me for typing them that way, I have always known them as the city name and state at the end. It gives them a separate identity than the San Diego State.

As it is, MWC does not have a foothold in the Los Angeles tv market. Getting any of the Big West LA area schools in could help out.

The BWC has no one in San Diego so adding UC-San Diego would not duplicate a market and it's probably not a concern for the BWC since they have five schools in the Los Angeles area and two more fairly close.

Referring to unknown news sources from "few years ago" doesn't count.

The MW has no desire to force itself into the Los Angeles market because it would be foolish to try to compete with UC-Los Angeles and Southern California along with all the pro teams there.

There was never any talk about a MW - BWC merger for many reasons with the biggest one being that the MW requires football.

I'm not going to try to say that I know everything about the MW, but the office of the Mountain West Conference is in my neighborhood.

There was an article in the Orange County Register back in 13 about the grassroot efforts to revive Fullerton's program. AD wasn't against it, but the cost structure won't support it. Not just Title IX, but also running athletics like NEC or Patriot with limits.

It's not a Big West thing, but maybe a few Cal State schools looking to bail. And "looking" is pretty liberal.

There is no one else in the wide world of sports that refers to Cal State-Northridge or C-SUN as Northridge State....

"A known fact"--Wow.
I'm not going to bash you DavidSt...but what you wrote here is simply not true. There was never any talk any where of a Big West MWC merger. I'd love to read a linked article proving me wrong. I don't count old posts by you as proof. I'll wait for evidence of the" known fact".

It was in the Long Beach local paper website that you can't access anymore with quotes from the AD of Long Beach State saying that.

Then you don't know what you are saying at all. I was born in the state of Washington, lived in Idaho, lived in Colorado in the Colorado Springs area, lived a short time in California, and I have heard people called the schools when I was living there as Northridge State and all that, used to live in Parker, Arizona just north of Yuma on the Colorado River. I know more about the west then you think I do. Stick what you wrote and shove them back in your mouth.

RE: Big West Rejects UC San Diego
I've got nothing against you, David. I appreciate your focus on smaller schools. So I come in peace. But you're the only person I've ever seen refer to UCSD as "Cal San Diego".

There are reasons that formation doesn't stick. It's clumsy. I always have to stop & think about what you mean.

Are you referring to SDSU as "Cal-State San Diego" and dropping the "State" part?

Are you referring to the Catholic University of San Diego and adding the "Cal" to distinguish it from universities in other states? Similar to Loyola, MD.

These interpretations are admittedly awkward stretches. But no more so than referring to UCSD as "Cal-San Diego".

It's a free country. You can call UCSD whatever you want. And I usually figure out what you mean by context. I'm just saying, the phrasing is very hard to read. And I say that as someone with roots in CA. I can only imagine how much more awkward it reads for people out east. As if we started referring ECU as "UNC-Greenville".
