Going 24-12 and getting sandblasted in the first round while the Lawsons and DJ Jeffries are lighting it up at SEC schools is going to get him canned....no matter how crazy out expectations are.

So first you've conceded Markel, and now you're conceding Jeffries. We may lose Markel - but the decision with the Lawsons did not decrease our chance of keeping him. Quite the opposite.

Same could be true for Jeffries. What 5-star wants to come to a program who has sold out to run everything thru other players with a different last name from you?

I conceded Markel because Gary Parrish, Jonah Jordan and some others have conceded Markel.

I conceded DJ Jeffries because he's a cousin of the Lawsons and Tubby has called him exactly one time in 365 days.

Call me negative I guess. I try to read the tea leaves as best as possible without being naive.

But most who conceded Markel did so before 11:15 am on Wednesday. It was about post-season prospects - not the Lawsons. Now it's different. May not be enough, but it's definitely not worse. And many here are trying to act like this seals it for Markel - which is misleading.

Jeffries as a relative? meh. Irrelevant. Tubby may have called him once - not sure where that's coming from. But he's watched him play in person, a whole lot.

'Not sure where it's coming from?' It's coming from a quote from the kid's dad in the CA.

Good grief.......

"D.J. Jeffries, considered the No. 5 recruit in the 2019 class by Scout.com, grew up a Tigers’ fan. He is a cousin of the Lawson family, lives just 30 minutes away from campus in Olive Branch, Miss., and went to middle school in nearby Cordova. So Corey Jeffries can’t understand why Smith has only spoken to his son once since taking over at Memphis last April. "

Like discounting and mocking Jake's and Jeremiah's tweets in support of the program.

Loyal kid is loyal.

It's great that Jake and Jeremiah are loyal to our school and take these things personally. And, just so there's no misinterpretation, I mean that with all sincerity.

But that very loyalty is a pretty good reason to take their opinions on this issue with a pretty big grain of salt. Of course they feel that way.

You're entitled to your opinion. I see it more like, they've seen everything for the past 2 years. Neither of those kids are dumb. They can form opinions. If they were scratching their heads about the situation, they'd probably keep quiet. Instead they came out public. And the fact that they're Memphis kids gives me hope that there are other Memphis high schoolers and coaches who are also breathing a sigh of relief.

But it's fair to discount their opinions. Just don't mock them.

Well, you might want to bite the bullet and listen to the Tiger basketball podcast from yesterday and read the latest beat writer column.

It would help you not look like you don't know what's going on.

Eh? I said I didn't know where the one phone call was coming from. I missed it. Wasn't running my mouth. I said he's seen him play and that Markel was unhappy before the Lawsons left - less so today. That's not running my mouth or getting busted. Unless you're a girl scout. And I know you're not.

And that's fine. I'm actually looking more forward to next year now than I was yesterday.
Bottom line, I think this team will be better, more motivated and surprising. I'd expect 5 more signees with all ready to compete and play.
Like I said, I sure I'll catch hell here for this opinion, and that's fine.

While I don't think our team got better by the Lawson's leaving, the talk of the program being a dumpster fire is premature. I may not agree with how Tubby is going about rebuilding the program but he's doing it his way. Maybe everyone is right and he'll be a disaster but I'm not ready to go there yet. A 19 win season isn't great but when you consider we didn't have a point guard, real wing player, any defensive presence in the post and no three point shooting, it shows he still has the coaching chops to get the most from his guys. I know the counter argument: he chose not to pursue grad transfers and late recruits to fill out the roster last year. That is completely valid and I'm not excusing it, I just think the team will look better going forward with a full roster of his guys. Yes, it's been a crap 24 hours but even with all that's gone on, there is still a reasonable path to success out there. I'm choosing to remain hopeful.
