Saw this posted elsewhere and found it interesting:

From an interview with Saul Smith last year:

"Recruiting, to me, is the lifeblood of a program. But the great thing about working for a guy like Coach Smith is if a player is not interested or kind of puts us to the side, we don't even worry about it. We just move on to the next kid. He's won with less players; he's won with great players. So when a kid struggles to figure out what he wants to do, we're like, 'Look, you've got a scholarship offer. We're willing to take you if you really want to come. We're letting you know we've got two or three other kids in mind.' And if they say, 'Coach, I'm gonna wait,' I'm like, 'Well, it's been great. Let us know if we can do something for you,' and we'll just go sign the other kid. We don't have time for that."

Thats like me going to score a hot chic, showing up to bars in sweatpants and a beat up car and saying "hey babe, Im interested in taking you home. Ill be in the corner over there by myself if your interested".

No wonder they've never signed a top 50 player. They aren't willing to tolerate a kid making a tough decision between 10 different schools??? That whole paragraph said it all.

That tactic might work at a school like Kentucky.... I guess......

Add Garrison Brooks (PF) as a target IF he gets out of his LOI w/Mississippi State. Joe Esposito is the lead and was recruiting him prior. Brooks also played AAU ball with Jamal Johnson.

It was mostly hyperbole. I would never wager on that for a myriad of reasons, mostly, I want our basketball team to win every game they play.

If you wanted to wager on our football team winning 8-9 games this year, I'd take that bet. Hopefully, for the same reason I stated above, you wouldn't though.

There is no way they hire Tubby if they didn't think the B12 was imminent. Safest of the safest hire.

For $3MM we could have hired Holtmann, taken a serious run at Archie Miller....or just hire Brad Underwood away from Oklahoma State. Utterly botched search.

It wasn't even that safe of a hire? You know what he did at Minnesota and Texas Tech. Why would you pay him 3mm to do that here.

The funny thing is that the hot Chick does get to do that...The hot chick gets to chill and wait to see what else is around and take her pick. We aint the hot chick, we gotta work.

But it appears by that statement that the staff is saying that we will keep moving down the bar until we get to the first chick that easily says yes. At this point we are down to 200lb chick with the stache.

The sad thing is that Saul doesn't seem like he cares to compete to try and land a kid...Just hey were Memphis and my dads Tubby...Wanna play...If the answer is no whether we need you or not we are moving on.

Different definition of safe. From the B12 perspective. You make a risky or irritating hire in their eyes and then all of sudden it is no longer imminent. Of course, the irony is we still didn't get in, but we absolutely didn't think that was the case at the time. Quite the contrary. We absolutely considered it imminent. So they hired someone that was 100% guaranteed not to 'rock the boat' from any potential angle with the B12.

Yes. I was well aware that is was hyperbole. This board seems to major in hyperbole, in place of actual discussion.

Anyway, I agree with you on football. I'm thinking/hoping for 8-9 win season. In basketball, with what is already the 2nd best recruiting class in the AAC (before today's JUCO signing and presumably more good ones to come on board this year), I fully expect a similar win total to last year (maybe more), despite all the angst and teeth gnashing that has proliferated this site, this week.
