RE: Fire RUDD
I know we've all speculated about the coaching searches and who is ultimately responsible for making the decision on who to hire.
I'd love for the beat writer or someone to dig in deeper on the process that resulted in the Tubby hire. I think we know what the decision makers were thinking, but I want to hear it from Bowen, Rudd and whoever else was a key player.
It didn't take a rocket scientist to know that it seemed like a bad fit. Other than the "He's won everywhere he's been" and "He's a future HOF'er" argument, what was the logic in hiring Tubby?
So many things wrong with that decision, starting with Tubby not understanding the dynamics of the program and the city. I mean c'mon. Did Bowen and Rudd not discuss this with him during the hiring process? Did Tubby not think to make a few phone calls and ask about the situation? The fact that he was surprised tells me there was an EPIC failure by everyone involved, including Tubby, Bowen, Rudd and any of the "money" guys that were involved.
Who takes a coaching job (or hell, any job) without doing their due diligence and talking to people about what the reality of the situation?
Memphis fans shouldn't just be disappointed. Should be angry.

A guy who's getting a 1mm dollar annual raise and will get paid 15mm dollars no matter what and isn't really worried about his next job.
Why anyone connected to the AD thought it would be a good hire is the real question.

This hire is what happens when you have big boosters making huge decisions rather than good ADs that are hired to do exactly that such as Tom Jurich.
If they don't trust Bowen to lead the search then fire him.

Rudd has all of you fooled. He is the head clown in charge and pushed for the Tubby hire.

Bowen is an above average AD
Let's give Tubby the chance to start over without so much influence from the Lawson's. The Lawson's milked the power they had to the max and it was detrimental to the program.
100% agreement!

I'm stealing this from Parrish, but this is why Tubby was a bad hire and is bringing this program down:
When you pay Tubby what he's making, you have expectations that are valid and fair.
1. Has he reinvigorated the fan base? No
2. Has recruiting gone well? No
3. Any improvement in the roster over Year 1? No
4. Has he taken the good parts of the program and made them better, like the Lawsons and Crawford? No
5. Season tickets going well? No

I agree with you somewhat here Briskbas - who wouldn't take a big pay raise and endure whatever for the paycheck step?
But, I would think that Tubby has some amount of pride and resolve to get this turned around. Because if he is still in charge of an under performing program in a couple more years and is kicked to the curb, what does that do to his "legacy" as a coach? Wouldn't that squash the "future HOF coach" talk? Tubby is probably like any other D1 coach who has reached the top of the hill (even if it might have been with another's kids), he has an ego and I hope (maybe not a good plan) that if he does consider this as a last job, he wants to go out having restored the program to some level of relevance - i.e. tournament appearances/wins.
Just my thoughts, as addled as they may sound.

Rudd has other priorities on campus. But it is Bowen's job to keep a eye on everything going on in the athletic program.
All of this did not just happen over night. There had to be signs and it was Bowen's job to read those signs and get ahead of things.

There is a reason he has held so many jobs.

Good points. In fact we got worse as the year went on.
