It’s simple – why cross and risk arrest if you know now you’re going to be sent back?

The first months of the new administration have seen a huge drop in the number of people being caught by agents on the U.S.-Mexico border, raising the possibility that a “Trump effect” is keeping migrants away.

Fewer than 12,500 people were caught at the southern border in March, the lowest monthly figure in at least 17 years and the second straight month that border arrests dropped sharply. Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, in testimony submitted to a Senate committee, called the decline “no accident” and credited Trump.

Apprehensions are up in May, but so are illegal crossings.

There was a 27 percent increase in migration as compared to April 2017. This is compared to a 14 percent increase from the same time period in fiscal year 2016. However there is a 64 percent decrease in migration when comparing May 2016 to May 2017.

Looks like we'll need a little more time to see how this will all shake out under trump.

My wife reports that hispanic use of our local health department is down considerably this year...so much that she may have to do away with a couple of positions. Fear of deportation is the root cause.
