RE: HM continues to be the best...
HM does in fact continue to be the best. We have been incredibly fortunate to have him. I only hope that EM will TRY to match him. EM just doesn't seem that in to it. Rarely makes posts to the BBALL blog. Will see what he does on FBALL. The content that HM puts out is exponentially more than EM has ever put out for BBALL. There is so much info he could share - I don't know if he thinks people aren't interested or if he just doesn't care to do it.
The ONLY reason I continue to subscribe to The Pilot is for coverage of ODU sports. Literally - the only reason - and I do it to support them covering ODU. If EM doesn't cover BBALL and FBALL - I'll save the coin.

Interesting to consider the way the 4 main guys who have covered ODU football have gone about it. Ducibella did the hiring and the very early start-up days and favored fewer, longer stories. But he wasn't around long enough to get a true gauge.
Radford was a homer from the word go, in bed with Wilder, but creative in that he came up with the Breakfast with Bobby. But you got very little, if any, criticism of the program which I always found strange.
Minium, frankly, wrote too much. I didn't much care for all of the CUSA stuff, because I don't much care for CUSA. I go to the games to watch and enjoy ODU. Minium covered us like it was city hall, his former assignment, and there just aren't THAT many hardcore ODU football fans, dying for every scrap of info. Sorry, folks, at least not yet.
Miller will probably take a more measured approach, maybe a couple of things a week. With almost everyone gone from the department, he'll also likely get pulled in a couple different directions. Maybe not; frankly, it probably depends on how successful a season ODU is having.

I disagree about the hard core Football fan....I know a ton of hard core ODU football fans. Now all of Hampton Roads may not be hardcore ODU Football say like a PSU or Ohio State or Even a Notre Dame. But I think you are selling us short on the rabid fan syndrome

I bet you there aren't 20,000 -- the number of sold-out Foreman -- who are hardcore ODU FB fans who also subscribe to the paper and are dying to read anything about the program. But we'll never know the answer to any of that, will we?

I enjoyed the constant stream of info coming from HM. I don't really understand why that would be a problem.

Who said it was a problem? All I'm saying is Miller will likely do it differently, because he won't see everything as must-write the way Minium did.

Miller gets sent on all kinds of wild goose chases. He quite simply does not have the bandwidth to cover us in the same depth. Not really his fault, just a product of another failing newspaper. If they cut the staff they hire to push political stories on Facebook all day and spend that money to give Miller a little help from another professional, we would probably get better coverage.

Todays paper was so thin I had to use a pair of tweezers to pick it up off the driveway.

Yup, and Richmond laid off 30 people last week, 13 reporters. Roanoke got rid of a bunch. It's happening almost everywhere. It's sad because I love newspapers and reading them with coffee in the morning -- or I used to. ... Dave Johnson at the Daily Press is responsible for W&M, CNU, ODU, CAA in general, putting up short videos, tweeting and who knows what else. ... Dying industry

Yup they, newspapers, are going down. I also have enjoyed the morning paper for well over a half a century (even used to get the afternoon edition) but they are clearly a sinking ship. I was lucky enough to know an Assist. Editor in NC and a former Editor of the VP. Both have told me in no uncertain terms printed newspapers are done. One discouraged his son from majoring in Journalism for that reason. To be totally honest if not for Harry, local HS sports stuff, and a few scribes hanging on I would drop it myself. I also miss the days when it was more substantial, especially when the big Sunday paper could occupy a couple of hours. Sticking with my metaphor a daily print newspaper will be like the Titanic in the not to distant future. Famous but mostly forgotten.* *(unless they make a 4-D movie about them)

Hard to believe but newspapers used to report the news without a slanted view.

I actually think that the media has always been this slanted. The difference is that the laity didn't have the tools to recognize the problem until only the last 20-or-so years. Until actual, real-time "fact-checking" (not the pretend stuff touted by the Washington Post and others) became available via on the internet, journalists were essentially unaccountable for irresponsibly spinning the news. No longer.
I agree that it is a bit sad to watch an established industry die. But I can't say that it is necessarily for a bad reason.
