More like: Horizon takes the Great Lakes schools, and Summit takes the Plains schools.

(not sure where WIU falls, in that)

WIU fits in the Summit/MVFC or the OVC. Horizon is for urban Great Lakes schools.

The Horizon will stand at 9. Realignment is done.

The urban candidates are Denver, Omaha, and UMKC. (IUPUI is not a viable candidate). Mediocrity in all three programs a concern, Denver has the budget and support to become strong quickly in MBB, the path is far more difficult for Omaha and UMKC. Denver however looks funny on the map, even though in reality it's quicker to get to than Wright State, Youngstown State or Green Bay (and cheaper than most) due to it's proximity to a major hub airport. But often decisions are made looking at a ap, not at the access charts (pictures outweigh numbers). So I conclude they will not take anyone for the time being.

Made up it of thin air, Stu.

Not a single Horizon athletic director or president gives a rat fart about Denver, Omaha, or KC, and have said nothing of he sort.

If DU had the money and support to quickly become strong in Men's BB why haven't they? They were average in the SBC, average in the WAC and average in the Summit. DU is a hockey, LAX and soccer school. Too many attribute greatness to a program that hasn't been great since they left D2.

There are a couple of others to look at.

Lindenwood in the St. Louis area and Bellarmine in Louisville. Bellarmine does have a great basketball team, and they are there in the Great Lakes area of the schools in the Horizon.

That's true. Really, the only school I've heard the Horizon talk about was NMSU last year. And my guess is it was NMSU who did the contacting as they looked at options outside of the WAC.

The only Omaha Horizon talk came from a columnist/fan boy in Omaha who seems to be under the impression that Omaha's second place finish in the SLT made them a hot commodity. Nope.

UMKC are you shopping themselves around because they made the stupid mistake of leaving the Summit and now the Summit won't take them back and they can't afford the WAC travel.

I'd take UMKC back in the Summit. I think the Summit would be foolish not to. Easy travel partner with Omaha.

In truth, Summit can't really afford not to look at any established DI school, other than perhaps Chicago St.

So guessing that UMKC just hasn't swallowed their pride yet, and admitted WAC was a colossal mistake.

You may be right, but around the time DU were invited it was rumored that UMKC had approached the Summit about being re-admitted and were told sorry, not at this time. Things may have changed but those stories were definitely out there at that time.

If Horizon takes one or both of the IUPU's than the Summit could really use UMKC

UMKC start a baseball team and the Summit would pounce in a heartbeat.

RE: The Next Realignment Effect on the Horizon League
MplsBison,

You have been very wrong on all that has gone on, so you attack. My list is simply urban schools to get at least a look. That is everone in the region fitting at least some of the criteria. Note, NMSU is not going anywhere for now - they concluded the WAC for now not much worse than tHL.

The Horizon does not have any good candidates. If they did they would have already invited somebody. They have been interested in 11 because they are in the strange position of every team sport except basketball has 1 or 3 schools not sponsoring, so having an 11th would ironically make all other sports even, and bring a 20th (10th home) game conference schedule. Losing Valpo puts every sport even, so no rush there, just Basketball.

But the Horizon will stand at 9 because no schools on that urban list improve Basketball. Their commissioner explained that they were looking at an 11th to improve the chances of NIT bids and every other year be in the conversation for an at-large NCAA bid. IUPUI, Omaha, UMKC, RMU, et al, wont do that, and might even worsen the league RPI.

By the criteria of helping basketball the list would be Belmont (forget it, if the MVC was a "no", tHL is a "hell no"), NMSU, SFA, and GCU. Arguably Murray State could be added, and for resources to find a program should it get going (as motivational speaker Pinocchio put it in a GEICO ad, "you have potential") you can throw Denver and Liberty on the list, and perhaps Oral Roberts. Kansas City and Omaha are pimping themselves, but they don't have the funding to make a splash (IUPUI is not even pimping themselves and is even less well supported and less successful).

I am assuming that North Dakota State and South Dakota State are staying in the Summit. Although not funded at the same level, they have good success in the sport and are well supported by local fan bases.

So from that survey of all schools, even expanding the region, are there any that would fit all three criteria (1. urban, 2. well supported, 3. would raise tHL RPI) and be worthy of an invite? I don't see one that checks all the boxes.

That is why I think realignment is done. The Horizon stays at 9 after losing Valpo. (Not saying they wont go through the exercise of interviewing candidates)

The HL is not yet done. Obviously they are awaiting the decision of the Valley before making any announcement. They have been in talks/negotiations with several candidates. Their hope is to get at least 1 for '17-'18, hopefully all three to go to 12.

Remember, in both cases of Oakland and NKU, they weren't added until the first week of May. So there is time.
