This is ironic or strange, but if I hear negatives on a basketball situation from someone in person or on the radio, then the next person I talk too has just the opposite opinion. So being a true blue tiger, older than most, I guess I will be passive and take a wait and see approach.
The one positive about hiring Coach Smith was we all knew he could coach, a proven x’s and o’s guy and I think from the few games I attended and from what I saw, he did ok.
The one huge negative we heard mentioned is that he can’t or want recruit. To me, as of now, he has not done much to disprove this so far.
Gary Parish and I believe Jason Day bashed Coach Smith last week for not getting Nick King. I was caught up in their reasoning and was sure they were right. They sold this as Memphis loses out to MTSU on a highly regarded recruit. Then I talked to someone who helps coach AU ball and they indicated Nick King has athletic ability, but has somewhat limited basketball skills and is not a true D1 guard and will struggle as a guard, but a little undersized for the 3. They indicated that the staff knew exactly what they are doing and have players coming in that will be a better fit. It is ok for me to say this as I am not getting paid a dime, but I don’t know right now what is best. I would have liked to see Nick King suit up, but I never played college basketball and wore canvas tennis shoes in high school, so what do I know.
I think this past season was dismal to say the least and yes, the fire should heat up on Coach Tubby. I love Tiger Basketball and the head coach needs to understand how passionate the fan base is and he needs to express a sense of urgency to get things back on track. The staff may feel real confident they can get the job done and have a handle on the players they are recruiting who will us back to a prominent program. But I am not so sure they are selling this to fans nor the media. The Memphis job is a great job and should not be a huge paycheck to bridge to retirement.
Do you really think you can use this word on the board?
Obviously, a new poster.

He said they hit the wall and had fatigue. Therefore, it should be imperative from his bosses that he have a full roster next year.
He said he hired a S&C coach too late and it affected the team. Therefore, it should be imperative from his bosses that they players are at max potential physically by the time next season tips.
I don't think it's is fair to criticize him for not going after Nick King - in a vacuum.
BUT - he better have better players than Nick King lined up to sign in the late period.
Seems like this staff just decided 2016 was a wash the second they took the job.
I hope he has better players in mind than King, whom I believe was a top 40 player coming out of HS. I seem to remember King as a tough and gritty player and an excellent rebounder for his size but was not a great scorer.

Well, nothing to wait and see about Tiger basketball anymore.
We all realize that Tubby will not be able to fill all these scholarships.
Wtf was Bowen and company thinking when they hired Tub?
