It really has reached monumental levels and the disconnect between community and NIU has never been more apparent

It's like they're both going through stuff operationally where they're so focused in on themselves that the relationship is suffering. It doesn't seem so much oppositional like the old old days as must as isolation from each other.

The buck stops at the university. I've always said, to simply say "we are your neighbors, support us" or "you graduated from here, support us" is lazy and not a compelling enough reason to build a relationship.

The new Dekalb mayor is an NIU alumn and seems keen to pushing the NIU-Dekalb thing.

I know Jerry Smith and he is indeed a proud NIU alum. He also is an NIU football and basketball avid fan, season ticket holder, and HAF donor. He has bled red and black for many years. I can guarantee that the NIU - community relationship will improve.

This pleases me, thank you for this update, I had been wondering if anyone had any information on the new Mayor. If NIU alums should be excited or not, clearly we should be. Thank you.

I knew Jerry would win because he knows everybody in town. For years, he has sat by me in basketball. Every game, dozens and dozens of people walking by stop to say hi and chat. I have never seen anyone who knows more people. He is a positive guy, communicator, bridge builder, and everyone really likes him.

But the question we are all dying to get a response on.... is he going to bring back The Grotto!?

Unfortunately, no. Jerry is a pretty stand-up guy. No matter what I tell him to do about the Grotto will fall on deaf ears. Besides, we'd have to build a gleaming new, modern Grotto, which is just not the same. All of the "encrusted" floors, walls, and curtains from the original Grotto have already been broken up and sold as souvenirs. And, as we all know, a Grotto without encrustation is like a plump wiener with no hot, moist bun to stick it in.

I think of it a bit differently, that it's amazing that all those programs subsisted on only $2M. Seems a drop in the hat.

Agreed. Dropping swimming/diving is one thing, but soccer and baseball are big sports with multiple coaches, large rosters of student athletes, trainers, support staff, equipment, uniforms, travel expense, etc.

That's Edwardsville, not Carbondale. Don't think they have football.
