RE: Why are you a fan of ODU sports?
Grew up in Newport News & Poquoson. Older sister attended ODU when Gresham was "new."
Listened to ODU hoops on the radio since I was in elementary school, always felt a draw to the basketball programs. Got to regularly use a friend's season tickets from 8th grade through my senior year in high school (1997). Chose Old Dominion due to its proximity to my media connections and ability to jump right into WODU and the Mace & Crown. Would have had to wait 2-3 years to get opportunities at Syracuse or Brown. JMU was also an option, but stayed closer to keep the relationships I'd built while in HS working various sporting events and while working at the Daily Press.

Applied to probably 30 different schools, but chose the closest one because of the launch of my website and local radio show on an AM station in Hampton. ODU did on the spot interviews and the day they came to my HS, I dropped my paperwork in front of them, they looked at the GPA, the boards and said "congrats." -- Later that same day (January of 1997), I watched ODU beat Tennessee at the Field House.

Announced eight sports in high school, so access to being able to cover a number of different sports also was a perk in having quick access to print and broadcast mediums (even though you couldn't hear WODU across the street unless the windspeed and earth's rotation was perfect). Spent six years as the Sports Director at WODU and a year as the Editor in Chief of The Mace.

Lived with wrestlers and sailors during my time in college and while never an athlete, was part of that non-revenue sport family the school has (prior to football). It's really a special thing. Announced home wrestling duals and spot events when Sports Info needed someone to do baseball or soccer. Announced the 2000 Field Hockey National Championships at ODU and my first two live television gigs were in The Ted -- I was the first student sideline reporter for Comcast Sports Net. Also did PBP for a women's game on WHRO while a senior.

And yes, shameless self promotion (which apparently people tell me I'm good at) -- I sang on stage (drunkenly) at Friar Tucks and named the building that stands in its place "The Ted."

Love everything ODU did for me (except that instance where ODU Police ... well, nevermind) and I wouldn't be where I am today if not for the decision to head "across the water" and become a Monarch. I wear my ODU gear proudly when I'm not working events. My wife knows that I'm not to be bothered during the 3 1/2-4 hours on Saturday during the fall as I find various ways to watch or listen to ODU football. I've watched ODU football streams from four different countries.

Longtime subscriber to MonarchMedia (And all its iterations) and consume as much ODU sports information as possible, even though it's heavy on wrestling during the winter season.

Now living in Minnesota, my opportunities to see home events is limited. I try to make a football game every year (missed one in 2012) and my then-girlfriend and now wife flew with me back to VA so we could attend the Chowan game. I live for ODU sports except when I'm working and have to be impartial (although I do make sure when I'm announcing nationals, when ODU gets an All-American, I get to make the call -- shhh!)

ODU sports has been a part of my life for probably 30 years and it will continue ...

I grew up in Virginia Beach, and my dad started toting my brother and me to games at Scope when we were babies. We attended a lot through the Scope years and have had season tickets since the year before The Ted opened. When football arrived we immediately jumped on board there as well, and I have been to all but a couple home games as well as a handful of road trips. ODU athletic events have always been a big part of my life, and I anticipate they will be for the rest of it.

I remember when ODU played schools like Philadelphia textile, Lynchburg, etc etc. No television or computer streaming, just go old radio. The youngsters won't be able to understand this, but it was FANTASTIC!. Had to use your imagination, the announcers painted pictures with words! Loved it.

RE: Why are you a fan of ODU sports?
I grew up in Chesapeake (Great Bridge). Stayed home went to ODU, Class of 1987 BSSE and in 2004 got my MSE. I am currently a public school administrator.

Followed ODU Basketball when my dad worked part time at Scope. He would take me to the games and I would sit just inside the gate he worked. I got seriously hooked when ODU beat JMU during the ECAC South Final at Scope. I think ODU played WV in the first round that year.
Watched a lot of the women's team, even when we beat the Russian National team at Scope. I was also at the women's very first Final Four at Scope.

Started going to all the women's NCAA games. They usually hosted 1st and 2nd rounds. In my opinion, they women's game was never the same once they left the field house.

I agree with this. (Although that could very well be a self-serving rationalization on my part for why I stopped attending.)

Born and raised locally, graduated from Indian River in 1991, didn't start at ODU but finished there (2001—a long, long story about why it took 10 years to get a four-year degree in a dying field [communications]). Even if I never attended I'd probably always pull for them at least a little bit because they represent my hometown.

The legacy of ODU Basketball has been, and will always be, mantras of perseverance. The current one reads:

"It isn't over 'til the fat man dances enthusiastically."

RE: Why are you a fan of ODU sports?
Grandpa and dad went there. I was a typical commuter. Worked full time through school so my time on campus was literally just to take classes. So did not attend and sporting events.

I moved to kill devil hills after graduating for 5 years. Started following ecu while dating a girl that went there. Cut my teeth learning to tailgate from the best.

Moved back home and got really into bball in 2008. Picked a great time. Been avid fan ever sense.

Posted from mobile device. Hopefully it's coherent.

RE: Why are you a fan of ODU sports?
My dad was a professor at odu since the late 70's so I've literally been going to odu games since I was born. My mom graduated from odu in 86 (she was in her late 30's and raising two kids and working full time at Norfolk General when she went back to school to earn her degree) and my uncle graduated from odu a little later. He's now an oil company executive. I grew up watching guys like hodge, sesssoms, Gatling, bowdler and poag. I loved going to games at the scope and every once in a while when we'd play a random game at the fieldhouse as well. I also greatly miss some of our old sunbelt rivals and am sad we are seemingly stuck in such a crappy far flung league, our fanbase deserves better.

I transfered to odu after attending Randolph Macon originally and deciding I couldn't stand most of the people who went there. I graduated, attended every game I could while at odu and had season tickets in both football and basketball right up until Blaine decided to do "his thing".

I moved to Charlotte to take a job as an LO last June so I am no longer able to keep my season tickets which has been a rough adjustment. Missing football games and tailgating in particular has been tough.

Even though I don't want jones as our coach and think we can do much better, I still try to watch every odu game I can. If I can be a Baltimore Orioles fan throughout the entire 2000's, I can deal with Jeff jones.

Just don't tell me I have to like it ha ha.

Hey RR, at least your NYG have won a super bowl during your (sexual) reproductive years. Being a skins fan has been downright dreadful....

I agree with you re: JJ. We should demand better because we deserve better.

period.

RE: Why are you a fan of ODU sports?
I am a fan becaause I attended ODU 69-73 during the Dave Twardzik and the running Monarchs era under Sonny Allen. If you liked basketball it was hard not to be hooked after watching those teams. I went to ODU initially to play baseball but saw right away I was going to be riding the pine most of the time and grades would suffer so I gave up that dream after my first fall ball season.
However I remained a big fan of all sports and was Sports Editor of the Mace and Crown my senior year. In the 90's I went to VCU and received my MBA but am not a fan of them. I live in Richmond and have been a season ticket holder since the mid 70's. I used to drive my son to games from Richmond even during the Tom Young era. He is now a big ODU fan.

RE: Why are you a fan of ODU sports?
I grew up in Norfolk and caught a maybe 5 games in my childhood. I have always been a big sports fan (Pittsburgh Pirates, penguins, and Steelers) but not a huge college fan. When it came time to select a school, I was a swimmer and had narrowed my choices down to Towson, Mason, and ODU. All the offers were pretty similar. My top choice was Towson but I was too dumb to get accpeted to the school on my own. I needed the coach there to pull a few strings. I loved my recruiting visit to both Towson and ODU. Though i could have waited, Spring Signing Day came around and I decided ODU would be it. Signed my LOI and less than 24 hours later, Towson coach called and he had gotten me in. Too late!!!

Best turn of events up to that point in my life. I came to ODU, hung out with many different athletes and had the time of my life. I really got into the Alex Loughton basketball days and wound up front row of the student section for CAA title game versus VCU. From that day on, I have been a huge ODU fan. Now my daughters are into it and my wife even enjoys it (though she doesn't admit it). ODU has become part of our family with my dad joining us with season tickets and ODAF donations even though he has no ties to the school. It all started with Alex Loughton!!

I'm from Northern VA, and also applied to VCU, Radford and U of Md. Going to Maryland would have required borrowing too much, and ODU was my favorite of the VA schools, so I attended from 84-89, with a BS in physics. Completed a Masters from AZ State (online) after moving here.

I relocated to Tucson in 2001, so I've been away for all of the football era. Though Tucson wouldn't be the best bowl destination for ODU (farther than Bahamas), I would love for ODU to play in the Arizona Bowl. Finally an ODU game 10 miles from my house! Or maybe a guarantee game against ASU? Probably too much to ask.

I just got back from a conference held in Phoenix at the Arizona Grand Resort and would be ecstatic if we played in a holiday bball, FBS road or bowl game there. Liked the city, climate and people.
