I don't hate them any more, since they have roughly returned to earth. I absolutely despised George Steinbrenner and I believe he ruined the competitive balance of baseball all by himself.

Bases loaded and no outs. Infield pop up followed by a double play. Damn.

Doc just devoted an entire column to a semi-coherent rant against 'wooos' at Reds games. It's been a few years since I've been back for a game. Anyone care to enlighten me on what he might be referring to?

Watch or listen to a game and you will hear people constantly howling Woooooo just about the whole game.

Something like this:

Coupla more mocks are out:

Sickels has it: 1) McKay 2) Wright to the Reds 3) Greene

BA's John Manual goes with: 1) Wright 2) McKay to the Reds 3) Greene

My preference right now would be Wright, but I'd still be very happy with Greene. Not sold on McKay.

The Cardinals were just what the Cubs and Reds ordered. Nice to see both teams knocking the Redbirds all over the diamond.

Yeah, without checking the actual numbers, the Reds do seem to have flipped the script on the Cards. On the other hand, now the Brewers seem to have our number. It's always something...

On that note, the Reds lineup and backups have been playoff caliber so far this season - no real holes to speak of. And the bullpen, especially the back-end, has been mostly lights out. Which leaves the rotation. The re-treads have been up an down, pretty much as expected. It's the kids that have disappointed, Reed and Stephenson in particular. It's always something... although in this case it's tough to fairly judge when you consider the absence of Disco, Homer, Finnegan etc.

Looking forward to the draft. Obviously the #2 overall is a big deal, but the Reds also have a shot to pick some high level talent with 2 more picks in the 30's iirc.

Agreed. Reds lineup has been solid. 10th in MLB in OBP, 3rd in Slugging, 4th in OPS. Reds have been the best defensive team in baseball according to fangraphs, they are 7th in weighted runs created and have the best combined offense/defense team WAR. Votto has been an absolute stud (as usual). Cozart has really developed into a big time hitter. His plate discipline has gotten so much better. He probably won't keep up the .353 batting average, but he swings at the right pitches, takes walks and is dangerous at the plate. The reds don't have a bunch of elite hitters, but top to bottom the lineup is producing.

The reds are last in MLB in pitching WAR. If they were middle of the league they'd really be legit playoff contenders at this point. As such they aren't that far off the pace because the central hasn't been great, though I feel like the Cubs will inevitably get it together and set a solid pace for the division.

Why hasn't Greene pitched in a month?

Just protecting his arm and stock. He's pretty much established himself as arguably the best HS pitcher since I don't know when so the only way for his stock to go is down via poor performance or injury. He's still playing in the field for his team and throwing bullpen sessions.

HUNTER GREENE DONE PITCHING FOR THE SEASON

That WAR stat is amazing. Cozart probably isn't quite this good, but I don't think anybody can say his success is a fluke anymore. He's gone from the guy everybody complained about to a guy you have to consider signing to a LTC especially with Herrera struggling at AAA (although Scooter's success somewhat offsets that). It probably won't work out this way, but you could argue nobody else is playing over their head while there's still a pretty good amount of room for offensive growth:
- I think Peraza will greatly increase his average
- Mez is showing signs of re-capturing his swing and timing especially wrt power
- Fingers crossed that Billy and Sheb will get on base more and stay healthy.
- If Votto somehow continues his trend of dominating 2nd halves (?), he'll have a season for the ages.

Unfortunately, I agree that the Cubs are still sitting pretty to eventually run away with the division this year.

RE: Baseball Season 2017
Beyond the draft, the Reds continue to invest pretty heavily in Cuba in particular. Word is they are about to sign another:

The Reds to sign Cuban SS Jose Israel Garcia

The Reds missed out on a guy or two they just couldn't afford, but "The team has now spent $33.5M (including penalties) on three Cuban players in the 2016-17 International signing period, locking up shortstops Garcia, Alfredo Rodriguez and Vladimir Gutierrez. "

RE: Baseball Season 2017
Draft rumors are heating up. Supposedly the Twins were leaning towards Wright, but now it seems they might be leaning McKay. But they are bringing in Greene for a workout today so that could still change.

I think Wright would be my pick of the 3 if he's available, but there isn't much linking him with the Reds. Several "experts" seem convinced that Greene is #1 on our board, followed by McKay (both as pitchers).

Stephenson admittedly has not developed as we would have liked, but he's still young.

Amir Garrett? He's started, what, 10 games in the MLB?
