I'll NEVER forget what happened, but I'm glad he came out to the spring game to support us.

He hated every minute of it. He couldn't even fake excitement in his answers.

Agree. Why is he still here?
I guess no other university would take him.

He is still president because the BOT determines when he steps down.

Same reason you still have your job. The people he answers to think he's doing a good job.

Ray Watts was never qualified for the position to begin with: he had zero experience with undergraduate education, and it showed right away with the fiascos he unleashed in the Honors Program and football. He had already shown himself a bumbling buffoon, overseeing the rapid drop in the Med School's standing as dean, and performed even worse as university president.
He represents an enormous investment in both political capital and actual capital - Sard-Verbinnen doesn't work cheap, and they charge the same whether you actually listen to their advice or not.
As much as I despise Ray Watts, the living examplar of the Peter Principle, we are fortunate to have him. The return of UAB Football and salvation of the university as a complete institution was a far, far closer thing than many realize, and had the Board found an actually competent stooge (or backed their stooge with competent handlers) we would not have defeated them.

& we can use his own shortcomings to our advantage as long as he is in that position.
I imagine that while the money is nice, the ol' lady doesn't like the bad publicity.
& despite what some of those say, UAB lost its tail when football was away. The Campaign For UAB is direct proof of that.
Without a strong UAB, Alabama can't go out & fund all of their projects.

Exactly. We play the hand we're dealt, and it has its advantages. With the legislature grasping the articles of impeachment like the gov would a pair of perky 34C's, the Bryant Bank faction has lost at least some of its influence - temporarily. Simultaneously we have a prez running out the clock to retirement. During this temporary lull, we fortify our program to fight off the next assault: fan base, buildings, all that stuff.

Hey!! this is Alabama where in public education, actual experience is considered irrelevant. We just hired a Superintendent of public education who has never taught in any school, never been a principal of any school and never administered any school district. He WROTE about public education so the BOE voted to hire him. That is like hiring Kevin Scarbinski as the next Bama FBHC because he has written about FB. Our new SOE has recommended many of the same types of deconstructive programs for Alabama schools as you cite Watts for doing at UAB.
