Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
I just recalled how idiotic it is that there's a team that goes by that moniker.

End Transmission...

Just now, huh? We were talking about this a month ago in the Clippers to Inglewood thread...

Any chance they'd move to the Honda Center?

So they can become the Los Angeles Clippers of Anaheim?

Talk about redundant, if fully translated, they're "The The Angels Angels." That's more redundant than Philadelphia Philles.

I prefer to call them (insert name of company that I'm not particularly fond of, or whichever company has the most annoying commercials at the time)'s Los Angeles California Angels of Anaheim in Orange County - I used Disney as the company for quite a while simply because they owned them previously, but I've been changing the company up recently. Sometimes it's simply Arte Moreno's name instead of a company, but I think corporate sponsorship in the name sounds better.

When Gene Autry founded the team, they were the Los Angeles Angels. They played at Wrigley Field in 1961. No, not that one. There was a 20,000 seat Wrigley Field in South Los Angeles. For 1962, they moved to Dodger Stadium. The Angels called that stadium Chavez Ravine instead of Dodger Stadium. They played there for four years. The team was renamed the California Angles in September 1965 in anticipation of the move to Anaheim the following year.

Autry wanted to build a new stadium in Los Angeles, but couldn't come to terms with the city. He almost had a deal with Long Beach, but that city insisted on the team being named the Long Beach Angels which Autry rejected.

The team became the Anaheim Angels on November 19, 1996, after new owner Disney reached as a condition of the agreement with the city of Anaheim to renovate the stadium.

I always thought the Angels were an expansion team from the 90s. I thought only the As, Dodgers, Giants, and Padres were CA teams prior.

RE: Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
Disney was happy to agree to switch from "California Angels" to "Anaheim Angels" because in the minds of a lot of people Anaheim is synonymous with Disneyland.

The city hosed itself with the funky language in the lease agreement about the team name, which allowed Arte Moreno, after he bought the team, to use the ridiculous "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim" name.

It looks like the team is just calling itself "Los Angeles Angels" most of the time, anyway, take a look at these official press releases:

The Los Angeles Angels joined Major League Baseball as an expansion team in 1961 and have since gone on to win 10 American League Western Division Championships, host three All-Star games and capture the 2002 World Series Championship. Over its 56-year history, the franchise also boasts four MVP's, two Cy Young winners, two Rookie of the Year winners, 35 Rawlings Gold Glove winners and 153 All-Stars. Long Beach Angels sounds way worse than Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Thank goodness.

That was the plan. The "of Anaheim" part was just a legal loophole to bypass so he could market the team as the second LA team.

It's a Disney trademark, they had no choice.
