Does that mean Evans can play only one year at another institution ?

Jackson doesn't have to sit out because he graduates in Mayt, and would be a graduate transfer. Underclassmen have to sit out a year unless they apply for and receive an NCAA hardship waiver.

Of course they might not be quite as serious as your normal 2350 SAT, 4.0 GPA Rice students, but all the metrics show that the football team is pretty damn good. Just look at their job placement.

I would counter that the football team isn't recruiting the same level of player as BB or MBB. We rarely get 3 star or even 2 star recruits unlike the MBB players now leaving. My guess would be that the FB players understand better than others the slim to none chance they have at playing in the NFL. Which is also why we don't see many transfers out of football.

Also almost all of our FB players are from Texas and possibly have a better understanding about Rice, its academics, and the benefits of a Rice degree. As I said in another post I think most of the basketball recruits have very little understanding of the academic pressure of Rice.

This part isn't true. 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 we have signed 5, 7, 2, and 3 3-star football players, respectively. All the rest of our signees have been 2 stars.

And while we perceive there to be a drop-off in talent level on the field the last 2 years (I perceive it, but whether that's individual, or just overall depth, or whether it is true or not, is subject to the beholder I guess), it is fair to say that there have been more Rice players playing in the NFL over the last 3 to 5 years than any time in recent memory . . . . . more so than in the NBA for certain. Again, our football team has focused more on a red-shirt program of developing players, so it's different than our basketball and baseball programs.

There is definite tension between the ideals of the student-athlete and the goal of elevating an athletic program from G5 to P5 status.

We want the better athlete and on-field results, but when a coach leaves and we apparently have transfers, then the Board falls back on how much we "prefer players like Tamir who value a Rice education."

We're fortunate that we have players like that in all our major sports. But I doubt anyone here would want to undo our run 10-year run from 1999-2008, when we frequently had double-digit players taken in the MLB draft, and frequently lost juniors to professional baseball (acknowledging guys like Kenny Baugh and Ryan Berry who got degrees).

Yes, he has one year of eligibility left, whether that had been at Rice or somewhere else, as a graduate student. Same with Marcus Jackson. They are both getting degrees form Rice this May, supposedly.

No, Egor and Jackson have one year of eligibility. Evans will be able to play two more seasons, since he can use his redshirt during his one-year ineligibility after transferring.

Sorry for the confusion! You are correct. For whatever reason, I was reading/answering the question as if it was asking about Egor, not Marcus Evans.

VCU is losing some players too. Their Egyptian big guy (played HS ball in Houston and was originally a UH recruit) is leaving. And two of their four incoming freshman recruits may not go there.

My guess is one or more of the Rice players now end up at VCU. I think they have only 1 open scholarship right now but it could move up to 3 shortly.

What is the LSU situation? Could the two incoming freshmen that now won't be going to VCU be headed to LSU? How good was their Egyptian center while at VCU?

He averaged 5.9 PPG and 3.8 RPG in 13 minutes per game. 6th in points on the team and 3rd in rebounds.Started nine games and played in 34.

I'm pretty sure the Egyptian big guy was a Marcos Morcos recruit who came to a few Rice games. I even heard from him I believe that Rice was signing him but then the next thing I saw, he had signed with UH.

RE: Corey Douglas leaving
I think the MBB problem is that it is a one NCAA bid league so the only way to get there is to win the conference tournament so the better coaches and players will want to leave for a school in a multiple bid league. MBB has got to where you need to get players who will perform for you right away. The great ones are one and done and gone to the pros. The next level of players will try to get to a school in a better league Evans , Obi). The ones who have already graduated will often want to do something different for graduate school. If they stay here long enough to get their degree, I think they had satisfied their responsibility to the team.

Baseball players prefer having the leverage of signing after their junior year but most of them will come back and finish their degree after they finish their pro career.

It seems like our recent football players do better in their post graduation careers than on the football field here.

I hate to break the news, but we're in an absolutely terrible conference and have dismal fan support. We're in the minor leagues, and kids want a promotion.

Douglas followed two JuCos on twitter and no D-1 schools so if I had to guess what route he's trying to go...

Not that those are always right, but sometimes a good indicator. Similar searches of Quez's and Evans' twitters yield nothing besides Evans following the KU Rivals account.

Think it's important to note that Corey is an honor roll member (along with 10 other guys on the basketball team). Should confirm that the only reason he's going JuCo is so he doesn't have to sit a year, and can head back to D1 his junior year. Don't want anybody to think he's heading to JuCo because he couldn't cut it academically.

Must just really hate Rice then. Not like he was a standout player with multiple offers from other D1s. Kind of confirms the lack of fan support theory.

When he committed, I believe his twitter post said he was committing to the "University of Rice." He was a prep school guy w/o too many offers, and Rice offered. Don't really think you can blame him for leaving. And I actually think he'll get some power conference offers after a year at JuCo. He's 6-8, long and athletic, can defend, and can shoot. Even if he doesn't get good offers, he can play at most high academic schools.

Yeah, but that's a year at a JuCo with presumably even less fan support, and then uncertainty thereafter. Could also be that he got the sense he wouldn't be a star here (especially because the "new" coach is actually an old coach and so there wouldn't be a complete re-evaluation), so why not give it a shot elsewhere.

I'm sure a top JuCo is relatively close to Rice in terms of atmosphere. I'd hope our facilities are much nicer but the difference between several quiet Rice fans and several JuCo fans is pretty indistinguishable. Especially when the year after he could be playing in front of 6k plus loud fans every night if he goes anywhere decent.

He started all of the games he was healthy as a freshman, not sure what more he would want towards being a "star"?

That's a bit of a stretch...I doubt any JuCo has more than 500 fans at any of their games. Say what you want but if the team had stuck together for another year we had a good shot at winning the conference. I think attendance would have been much better due to these prospects

I was at several games this year where 500 would be a generous accurate assessment for our attendance.

How can we expect the attendance to increase until we have had 20 wins for a least three or four years?
