With the exodus, I now console myself that we have hired James Harden in the person of Pera.

Here's hoping we can keep Langley awhile.
And yes Mr Big, I agree. It is looking like Rhoades gave us a momentary thrill and temporary hope but nothing more.
This is the second time this has happened in four years. I wonder if the problem is something bigger, structural or systemic.

The problem is we hired a coach good enough to get hired away after a few years.

The problem is the job at his previous employer came open. I don't think he had done enough yet to get hired away by just anyone. But the people at VCU knew and liked him already.

RE: Corey Douglas leaving
I'm sorry to be a prick about this but I think in Corey's case, I wouldn't let him out of the scholarship if I was Rice. I suspect that won't happen but at least the other players did play some at Rice. Corey is 20, almost 21, and won't be able to play until 2018-19 if he follows the typical transfer procedure. But since he got hurt, he might be able to use this past season as a hardship rule, and be eligible by mid-semester next year I believe.
And I don't think that is fair to Rice. I would tell Douglas you're sitting out a year just like any other transfer and if you do, we'll let you out of the scholarship. But if you intend on playing next year, we're not letting you out of the scholarship. So either way, you're not playing unti 2018-19. Sorry but we expect players to at least have some sort of commitment to Rice when they sign a scholarship paper. That's what I would say if I was AD.
And by the way, I have nothing against Corey. He seemed to be a very nice, well-mannered young man the few times I talked to him. But a commitment is a commitment. I guess the only exception I might consider is if he has some type of family hardship I am unaware of.

He'll assumably go the JuCo route for a year and then head back to D1 as a junior. Wouldn't need to sit out a year if he follows that path.

Not that I think any of this is his fault, but I think the main draw of hiring him was keeping the team together. That isn't happening, so I wish we would've at least held interviews and done further due diligence rather than hiring him in 2 days. Maybe he would've turned out to have been the best candidate after a full interview process and it's a moot point, or maybe not. Would've liked to have seen it play out differently.
Can't totally fault our AD for handling it how he did, but wish we could have a do-over.
I think I said when he was hired that my priority would be to hire a coach that can build a program without relying on the current players... my assumption was that there was no-one Rice could hire that would keep some of the players from transferring if they were inclined to do so. The downside of taking your time is in the event that the players requested transfer prior to the hiring of a new coach.
It appears that Pera is very capable. I hope that the decision was made with the assumption that he may have to rebuild from scratch.

You expect a good coach to move on, but not to leave devastation is his wake. Pera will have an almost complete rebuilding job.

I hate to break the news, but we're in an absolutely terrible conference and have dismal fan support. We're in the minor leagues, and kids want a promotion.

The fact that this keeps happening means that we have to start doing things differently. I know that's a "no duh" statement, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Administration/BOT keep going about their merry way . . .

RE: Corey Douglas leaving
I'd do exit interviews and demand blunt honesty.
It seems clear that most mens' FB, baseball, and especially basketball athletes at Rice in the 21st century don't give a flip about the university or what it offers culturally and educationally. Maybe that's really always been the case to a significant degree --- but worth our mission because of those few who are the very best of the best.
If honesty is what you got, I think you'd hear that they never intended to actually have to study, that they aren't worshipped here, that the crowds and fan support suck, and that there's no good 'ol boy or hip hop culture to support them on campus. They simply don't fit in, nor do they like it behind the hedges.
I guess I'm just getting more defeatist about this whole enterprise of trying to pretend that there's more than a handful of Division 1 "student-athletes" that really exist in these mens' sports.
Am I wrong? Am I totally off base?
Instead of going Div III, maybe we should focus all energy and money on a new goal of being a Top 10 womens' and spring sports program...

The vast majority of baseball and football players stay at Rice and graduate. Men's basketball is unique in this regard, and the problem isn't limited to Rice.

Yeah, Bailiff has done an admirable job of getting student athletes to buy into Rice's academic culture.
Of course they might not be quite as serious as your normal 2350 SAT, 4.0 GPA Rice students, but all the metrics show that the football team is pretty damn good. Just look at their job placement.

We did get Igor as a transfer and he was a great asset. Does everyone transferring have to sit out a year accept for Jackson? I agree with you for the most part, but the few kicked out at the end of the semester were alarming.
But yes, the job placement is another thing. Lots of football players doing really great things in the workplace/grad/med/law school. Not that evident with baseball and basketball.

Jackson doesn't have to sit out because he graduates in Mayt, and would be a graduate transfer. Underclassmen have to sit out a year unless they apply for and receive an NCAA hardship waiver.

I would counter that the football team isn't recruiting the same level of player as BB or MBB. We rarely get 3 star or even 2 star recruits unlike the MBB players now leaving. My guess would be that the FB players understand better than others the slim to none chance they have at playing in the NFL. Which is also why we don't see many transfers out of football.
Also almost all of our FB players are from Texas and possibly have a better understanding about Rice, its academics, and the benefits of a Rice degree. As I said in another post I think most of the basketball recruits have very little understanding of the academic pressure of Rice.

This part isn't true. 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 we have signed 5, 7, 2, and 3 3-star football players, respectively. All the rest of our signees have been 2 stars.
