Why exactly? Because they opened their recruiting when we didn’t have a coach? That’s a pretty normal thing to do. When coaches change people are often released from LOI if they want it. These kids had just verbally committed.

Here's a possibility at QB from my brother, who cut and pasted it from the Stanford message board...

Quote:And this guy, Riley Smith, could be a QB offer for you.
https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2...ith-179843 Bloomgren
loved him and, when he couldn't get him a scholarship, was working on
getting him as a preferred walk-on. He really likes Stanford, but might be
winnable by Rice with a scholarship.

Also recruited for South Carolina by Kurt Roper...

I do hope these "follows" mean something, and in at least some cases I would hope that something ends up being a commitment. A few of these guys could turn this from a bad recruiting year to one of our best ever.

I mean obviously it takes two to tango but it at least gives us an idea of who we’re looking at.

We don’t have enough fans to have a Rivals reporter or anything so it’s the best we can get.

Is Jake any relation to John? John had one brother per old Rice media guides. They’re a bit far apart in age for brothers, but it is not a common surname.
...

I looked into this when FBO asked the same question back in April:

If they are related, it doesn't appear to be close:

John's parents are Johnnie G. Syptak (Jr.) & Shirley. His Syptak grandparents are Johnnie G. Syptak, Sr. & Vlasta Hermina Macat Syptak.

Jake's parents are Greg and Cristina. I believe his grandparents may be Gary Syptak & Judy, and his great-grandparents Elo & Mary Lednicky Syptak.

There doesn't appear to be a connection between these Syptak generations.

Update: The "berecruited" link for Greg & Cristina no longer works, but here's a link to a June 28, 2017, photo of Jake with his father, Greg: http://www.mysanantonio.com/neighborhood...254417.php

RE: 2018 Football Recruiting
Football recruiting might be the most inexact science there is in college athletics. Now you certainly need 3 and 4 star recruits instead of no stars or 2 star guys, but the 5 star guys often tend to be flops.

Baker Mayfield was a 3 star QB out of high school with his only offers being Rice, New Mexico and Florida Atlantic. He walked-on to Texas Tech before transferring to Oklahoma.

That's 2 recent Heisman Trophy winners who Rice actually were in on - Johnny Manziel too although wasn't he just a Rice baseball recruit?

Manziel received a football offer from Rice. One day we will actually get one of these Heisman candidates to matriculate.

Yes, I would love seeing one of them matriculate the ball downfield.

Willis would be a good get. Would be huge to the Kuithe brothers back in the fold. Hopefully they still like Rice and get excited about Bloomgren. Lots of P5 offers between those three.
