Think what you want, but over the last two years, only six teams have gone without at least one transfer. It's just the nature of the beast these days. Of course, if you're looking to blame Jones for everything, this is another bullet you'll fire. If you are being intellectually honest, the facts will show it is well within the norm.
Our issue is not just with players choosing to transfer for playing time. We have lost a ton of last ditch recruits that never should have been on the team if JJ didn't fail to fill out the roster with kids who could contribute . Then there are the three players that have been kicked off the team in 4 years and even more suspensions. Its a mess that can't be explained only by the ridiculous number of players transferring across the NCAA.

Well said Monarchblue. This is in line with what I was referring to. It is not solely about the transfers of Fields and Haynes, but rather the on-going developments where we seem to have one or more discipline issues every season where players are in street clothes for several games, and having people like Pervier that are recruited, then before they even get into the conference season they are kicked off the team. I'm not saying that he maybe should not have been kicked off the team. I'm wondering why he was recruited to begin with if he was such a bad apple. Same could be questioned about Douglas.

The more things like this happen, the more they are likely to continue to happen in my opinion because you are always trying to recover from the recruit(s) that didn't pan out. The last three seasons we have had to rely on walk-ons (Biberaj, Vassor, and Fields) to play significant roles on the team at least partly due to the events being discussed here. I seriously doubt that has ever happened to that extent in all of the prior years that ODU has been playing Division 1 basketball (mid/late 70's).

We relied on Fields because Evans backed out of his commitment.

RE: Haynes and Fields leaving ODU
Blaine kicked tons of kids off the team, especially at the end:

Pimentel
Coach Blaine Taylor confirmed Friday that reserve forward Jason Pimentel is no longer on the team. His departure leaves the Monarchs with five returning players and seven newcomers.

"We did not invite him back," Taylor said. "We felt like it was in the program's best interest to move forward without Jason."

Nayquan Mitchell
Another player, junior college transfer Nayquan Mitchell, failed to qualify academically for the second semester last season and was not invited back.

Breon Key
His classmate, Breon Key, was dismissed in June for falling short of his "academic and social responsibilities."

Yeah STFU up about transfers 10 years ago and there lack there of. 10 years ago the transfer market wasnt what it is today.

Wait a couple weeks until all the articles start posting about how many transfers there will be this year. Until then please shut your pie hole and go play in traffic.

Hearing people ***** and others post articles showing them they're wrong and still bitching. You lose credibility and RR you're sounding like a clown. If you dont understand todays transfer market and how large it has become then thats your issue but it seems the rest of us understand it quite well. For whatever reason they're leaving, MORE THAN LIKELY FOR MORE PLAYING TIME. If you really want Travis fields or Randy Haynes getting significant playing time, clearly you dont care how our team performs and improves.

Enjoy your packed lunch.

RE: Haynes and Fields leaving ODU
Well, I'm as sick of the constant bitching as anyone, and I question how much they really care about the school (Just MO), but I'll also admit that i very much dislike how we play, am discouraged by our lack of ability to adequately evaluate JUCOs, and completely turned off by our student body's apathy towards the program. So the naysaysers have some points. I'm just tired of reading them (yeah, I can skip over them, I'm aware). If we had better reporters covering the team, or if ODU hoops meant as much to the VP and DP as football seems to, we'd have some answers to these questions that keep coming up on recruiting, discipline. But we don't, so let the rampant speculation and misinformation roll.

There were 800 transfers last year and 351 college basketball teams. This year, the spring semester isn't even done yet and there are 200.

Anyone concerned with Haynes & Fields transferring either don't care about Haynes & Fields, or don't care about Old Dominion basketball. Them transferring benefits all parties.

Both were kicked off by BT

I don't believe either one was kicked out.

Key transferred to hampton and pimentel left to go to a d-2 school I believe.

Blaine didn't even kick baze out for a dui.

Night and day with jones.
You are using technical definitions. Let's get to reality.

Almost all these kids were kicked off the team, including Mosley. Many had the opportunity to "announce a transfer", but make no mistake, that is no different than giving an employee you want to get rid of an opportunity to "resign".

The only two I can think of that truly voluntarily left without a "resign or get fired" ultimatum were Batten and Palmore.

I do think we need to get rid of discipline problems (real ones like Pervier and Douglas not fake ones like Mosley). I do not think we should be pushing people we recruited out just because they aren't as good as the scouting report predicted. It isn't the kids' fault, it is your fault for doing a pisspoor job scouting and recruiting. Unless you are a blue chip athlete, you just aren't going to be effective playing PG in NCAA D1 at 5'9".

I also think it is phucked up to use scholarships to screw with these kids to get them to come and walk on.

Even worse is using the admissions office to break a commitment that has already been made. That's right, he who is not to be mentioned has been glaringly left off every list on this thread.

So you think every player who transferred out was forced out? Does that theory apply to BW and football or just Jones and basketball?

And to bring Snowden into the conversation?03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao

BW is meeting expectations. That is the difference. Not to mention he has 80+ scholar-athletes to manage. Not sure JJ has ever even had a full team of 13.

And what was done to the other guy set the tone.

We wouldn't like the "other guy" anyways. He's only a 64% free throw shooter and can only crack 6 points per game in 27 mins.

I guess he has 1 more chance as a 25 year old senior to show everyone how great of a player he is!

Shoot, a quarter of the way into the season last year there was a fire Bobby Wilder and all his FCS assistants outcry.

Exactly. Yet another recent recruiting failure that resulted in the need to rely upon a walk-on. Glad to see you are on board.

Just to rub in the coaching failure when someone talked about hiring his dad, Evans shot 40% from 3 this year and 84% from the free throw line......

And, did you see Javonte Douglas' D2 stats? Maybe we should have kept him, regardless of the felony charge.

I stated back then that I would have supported JJ's decision either way. The guy was a stud and I would have been fine keeping him if that was the decision, but I do understand he had to go. It's not like it was a fake discipline problem like he was caught smoking weed. Violence is a real discipline problem and the coaches would know whether or not he was salvagable. I am a JJ critic, but can't fault him with that one. At least someone was brought in worthy of significant playing time and at least the dismissal was justified.

That's great. How did Ambrose Moseley do this year? He didn't play for ODU either.

Bottom line is that ODU failed to get the recruit and ended up replacing him with a walk-on (again). The reasons for failure to both get and keep recruits are what we are talking about here. Someone hiring his dad, didn't get the recruit to commit to ODU, behavior problems after coming to ODU, poor grades after coming to ODU, not getting the playing time and leaving, etc. seem to all be happening frequently during this coach's tenure, and it has caused him to rely upon walk-ons to an extent that we have never seen before at ODU.

And you guys do realize that some decisions regarding student athlete discipline isn't JJ's to make, right? ODU Athletics has a student-athlete code of conduct that outlines disciplinary measures for certain violations. Furthermore, the University has a judicial system that also has the authority to discipline (they are students, after all). Think of GG Goodhope (she was involved in the Douglas on-campus situation). I'm fairly confident Karen would have loved to have kept her (she did help her to transfer to VCU with a strong recommendation), but I'm also pretty sure Karen's hands were tied by ODU.
