FWIW, I miss the rivalries with SDSU, UNLV, and New Mexico. Intense. Utah St.-BYU would be a crazy in-conference basketball rivalry.

Gonzaga, SDSU, UNLV, New Mexico, Wichita St., BYU, Utah St., Boise St., Nevada, Wyoming, Fresno St., Colorado St., SJSU, Air Force

Why hold up such an awesome lineup? So Wyoming can host BYU in football once every 7 years?

That's just the current order of things. The MWC has at least 5 programs who expect to compete for NCAA Tournament berths and almost all have large arenas that would eat the tiny gyms in the WCC. The WCC has 3 and only Gonzaga and BYU have a decent sized arena. St. Mary's just has a really good coach with a recruiting pipeline, so once he leaves, back to obscurity they go. Once BYU finds a major conference home, they'll be gone so stop, the WCC is not better than the MWC other than current on the court performance.

I agree. I would love for BYU and Gonzaga to move to the MWC.

It's dumb that football prevents this move.

If getting into the MWC helps its men's bball team, then it would be considered.

Yes, Gonzaga does care about the other Olympic sports. The issue is that the MWC has not yet proven that it would significantly help Gonzaga's men's basketball team. So, for now, the MWC isn't attractive enough for the hit that would come to minor sports and the loss of the SMC and BYU basketball rivalries.

However, if the MWC shows a plan for improvement, it could be a great move for all involved. Ie, bring the Gonzaga-BYU rivalry plus Wichita St. and the MWC potential as seen in the attendance numbers and MWC basketball history (of which BYU was a major player).

Except basketball pays the bills for Gonzaga, adding Gonzaga would lower the WCC greatly.
BYU claiming a rivalry with Gonzaga is hilarious...

Gonzaga is going to do what is best for Gonzaga...they don't care about BYU or what happens to them.

I disagree. MWC is the better basketball conference that is more competitive than WCC. You have like 6 to 7 teams each year in the MWC that competes for the conference championship while WCC is being dominated by Gonzaga. Saint Mary's and BYU are there right behind them, but can't get passed the Zags for the conference championship. I do think MWC gets the bum rap by talking heads who over RPI schools that do not belong ahead of others. Look at how some of the schools that are high on the RPI meter get bounced out of the first and second round by schools that are either not supposed to be in the tournament or a lower RPI rating?

Gonzaga is going to do what is best for Gonzaga...they don't care about BYU or what happens to them.

Gonzaga at BYU attendance:

2017 - 18,987 (13 tickets shy of sell out)
2016 - 18,987 (13 tickets shy of sell out)
(seating capacity reduced to 19,000 after 2015 season to install new seats)
2015 - 20,900 (sold out)

BYU at Gonzaga attendance:

2017 - 6,000 (sold out)
2016 - 6,000 (sold out)
2015 - 6,000 (sold out)

The visiting team has won the last 6 meetings; 3 years straight.

Wait, two games with both JUST 13 tickets shy of a sell out? Thats a strange coincidence.

Probably mentioned already but is it possible to be a true basketball only? Gonzaga and St Mary's would be awesome adds to the Big East.

(03-20-2017 03:14 AM)_C2_ Wrote:  I'd imagine BYU would try to go back to the MWC and if that bridge is burned, they'd finally give in and head to the AAC. St. Mary's is not nearly as distinguished and prosperous as Gonzaga. A travel partner is not nearly as important as it used to be, especially if the Big East would be worried about being stuck with deadweight in the future, a La DePaul or Seton Hall in general. If the Big East went to 12 and split into divisions, the Zags would rarely have to travel past Lake Michigan.

The answer (which I've said before) is for the WCC to invite some top MWC programs who think they are good enough to play Indy football.

WCC could add Boise State, UNLV, San Diego State and New Mexico to go to 14 schools and raise its profile as the #2 overall western conference. Those schools and BYU can play each other as independents. They could transform the WCC into a 3-4 bid NCAA conference.

This makes a lot more sense than moving Gonzaga, BYU and St. Mary's over to the MWC when the WCC is the better basketball conference, IMO.

It has nothing to do with BYU.

It's merely a question of if Gonzaga would be interested in becoming the MWC's 12th full member.

That question is entirely independent of BYU.

Those are the precise four MWC schools with which I want to see BYU revive its basketball rivalries.

Beat me to it. Yeah the MWC has had a bad couple of years but a Gonzaga is playing in front of hundreds of people in high school gyms when they could be playing in big historic arenas like The Pit, T&M, SDSU's arena...heck even Wyoming has an arena of 15,000k I think...A couple of bad years and The MWC is still 7th in attendance. What's the WCC? 20th? Take out BYU's huge arena and it's probably 30th.

Do you think those 4 would go Indy in football? I realize Wyoming, New Mexico and BYU formed the WAC together. And the long rivalries with them and Utah St, UNLV etc. I wouldn't mind seeing a lot of non-P5 schools trying Independence in football. It's not like the whole P5/G5 labels is advancing things for the "have nots"

Without BYU, WCC drops from 4,000/game (11th) to 2,600 (16th, behind the Big West) Take Gonzaga out as well, it drops to 2,290

Much more conservative "small town folk" than the Left Coast Seattle types. I have a sister in Seattle, cool town.
Cheers!

Spoke to Seattle is a 5 hours drive time b/c of the Cascades.

Portland to Seattle is a 3 hour drive

Boise to Spoke is 7 hours and 400 miles. Its the furthest city out of PDX SEA BOISE to Spokane.
