MyBB 2017-18 Basketball Thread
Can already predict what the starting line up will be next year for the Raiders. Obviously replacing Reggie and Jacorey are going to be to tough to do, but we have 10 returning...

Dixon PG 6'1" SO
Potts G 6'2" SR
Simpson G 6'2" SR
Walters F/C 6'10" SR
King** F 6'7" Transf SR

Off the bench:
Thomas F 6'9" RS FR
Johnson G 6'2" JR
Gamble F 6'9" JR

**Updated the starting line-up with the unexpected transfer of Nick King. (10/27/19)

(Original)...
Gave the edge to Simpson over Johnson just because he is a senior. But you saw what Johnson could do with 19 against Butler. He's a slasher and a scorer. For this reason I expect us to be more perimeter and guard focused next year as opposed to the Jacorey and Reggie show down low. However, the word on the street is that Thomas gave our seniors fits trying to guard him on the scout team. He may be the next Upshaw. So, for that reason I gave him the edge in the rotation over Gamble who has some serious skill sets at 6'9" but still hasn't come into his own yet. Gamble could also explode onto the scene next year.

And that's in addition to whatever the signing class brings to the table. In short, while it will be tough to replace our key seniors we have a lot of returning next year and should be again competing for a championship.

Let's get a couple of teams to go crash that dance next year!!

Neither Simpson, Potts or Dixon scored a single point yesterday in the loss to Butler. Are you sure they should be starters?

Meanwhile Johnson came off the bench to score 19 points. Why isn't he starting? 07-coffee3

So we should just ignore what they did the other 34 games this year and base it all on one game? 01-wingedeagle

RE: Looking Ahead to Next Year
WKU fans have been looking ahead to next year all season.

Returning we have:

Justin Johnson 6'7" Sr
Jabari McGhee 6'7" Jr
Damari Parris 6'0" So
TJ Howard 6'2" So

Incoming:

Lamonte Bearden 6'3" Jr Point Guard (Buffalo transfer. Former 4*)
Moustapha Diagne 6'9" So Center (Former 4* Syracuse commit, had to go Juco for grades)
Robinson Idehen 6'9" Fr Forward (3-star, had to sit out for academic reasons and enroll in community college this past year)
Taveion Hollingsworth 6'3 Fr Guard (3-star and Kentucky Mr Basketball)
Josh Anderson 6'4" Fr Guard (4-star ranked #43 nationally)
Mitchell Robinson 7'0" Fr Center (5-star and #6 nationally)

Plus whomever we sign in the spring signing period. I expect a Juco guard, 1 more freshman, and a grad transfer. There should be some excellent basketball in CUSA next season. If MTSU can keep it up and WKU gets their crap together again. Then we could have multiple bids from CUSA next season.

You forgot Taveion Hollingsworth. A 3* guard who was Kentucky Mr. Basketball and has scored over 2,500 points in his career.

Coaching matters....

anyone remember the fighting Tony Mitchell's the team that could just line up on the court and other SBC schools would just start to shake? Top 10 player and future lottery pick Tony Mitchell, top 100, 4 star player, Roger Franklin, top 70 player and #7 player in Texas, Jordan Williams and a few high 3star recruits.

The only problem Johnny Jones was the bench coach and then Tony Benford

COACHING MATTERS....even when you have highly rated recruits

You fail to mention that Tony Mitchell NEVER lived up to the hype. He wasn't that good. He ended up drafted in the 2nd round, based purely off of his high school reputation. He lasted less than a year in the NBA, and has played in the Phillipines most of his career. He wasn't even good enough to make it in Europe. Instead he's battling it out with Japheth Aguilar in the Philippines. Certainly, Johnny Jones and Tony Benford are subpar coaches. But Tony Mitchell was VASTLY overrated as a player coming out of high school.

It's ok. Young guns has been begging for stansbury to fail ever since we hired him. I wanted Harper to succeed, I wanted McDonald to succeed. I kept believing till the end, I will give the coaches a chamce unlike some people. We haven't had a recruiting class like this and all dumb guns can say is well stansbury sucks at coaching so it doesn't matter. If we can't win next year then start talking but not the spring before we get a top 10 player on campus. How stupid can you be?

Johnny Jones was a good coach for North Texas. He took us to a couple of NCAA Tournaments. Just because he didn't get it done at LSU, doesn't mean he wasn't a good coach for us.

Benford was a terrible hire. I figured out he couldn't coach during his first season. Unfortunately, our administration had zero desire to buy out his contract, and Mean Green stopped buying tickets. The Super Pit has been mostly empty for a few season now. Hopefully the McCasland hire will change our basketball fortunes.

I expect UAB to be in the top 4 and contending for a conference championship again. I love how our seniors represented our program, but I think some of those guys moving on will be addition by subtraction.

I'm really high on our incoming freshman. Bryant broke Grayson Allen's scoring record at Providence High School in Florida and Gueye has a versatile offensive game (similar offensive game to William Lee, but a better shooter). Hurtado is an excellent passer and an improving shooter. He elected not to play AAU last summer which is why his recruiting fell off. We have 2 more scholarships to fill which I expect to be used on a JUCO SG and either a JUCO or grad transfer big.

I think our incoming guys, the return of Norton and Lewis Sullivan, and the forward combo of Lee & Cokely should make us a good team. The wheels fell off this season since we lacked a true PG. That won't be a problem next year. Wildcard is what kind of improvement Ehsan makes as a coach.

Why would I point out "Tony Mitchell NEVER lived up to the hype"? Can you point me to where these recruits for Western played one game in college?

So basically you agree....

right now Western is going on hype and a coach that hasn't proved he can coach a team pasted the 2nd game of the NCAA Tourney?

Do you think Tony Mitchell was the first or even the last to be "VASTLY overrated as a player"? Point is the game isn't player or won based off of HS rankings.

You are so full of ****.....

I would never pull for Western to lose. Unlike some people I don't base by love of Western sports off winning or losing. As long as effort is being shown I will be there.

I never wanted a coach at Western to fail and I was for the reset year because I thought it was the quickest way to win. I was wrong and so was Gary and everyone thinking that way.

If you don't think coaching matters...then you are just stupid. Actually some Western fans are acting just like those UNT fans back in the day...

Western's talent is so good we just need to take the floor...the other team wont stand a chance. I will wait and see how they blend, play and coached.

COACHING MATTERS. This past season talent wise Western was just as good as anyone but maybe Middle in CUSA. If you think that was good coaching or average coaching...

You are stupid. COACHING MATTERS.

Lets hope Coach Stansbury is as good as his recruits. Or this was I just don't give a damn year for coach Stansbury, like some Western fans think. Are you in that group? But if so...what does that say, if a coach just gives up?

COACHING MATTERS

And I not saying recruiting doesn't bt if it was just based off top ranked recruiting classes. LSU would have made the dance and still be dancing. Miss St would have made it past game 2 when Stansbury was their coach.

COACHING MATTERS

edit: here the difference between me and some Western fans. Some of you love to *****. You call players failures. Coach failures. And you do it repeatedly after just about any game or bad play...day after day and week after week. Other than he should have played a zone or man to man or pressed or shouldn't have pressed. Or so and so was pressing and forcing shots or did not even try on defense...

you will not see me putting labels on these kids or coaches during the season...repeatedly. You won't fine post of me doing it this past season or any season. I'm a Western fan and that means all players and coaches are family once they take the floor. It does not mean I can't point out weakness...

like bench coaching

But I don't beat it to death during the season like some of out idiot fans did over the last 4 seasons. Most of those doing just that are not really invested in Western, the program, or these kids...

On paper this past season should have competed for a CUSA championship and a top 25. I adjusted my level down on these kids after seeing them for a month.... never did I say coach or players were failures. What I saw from our coach...I expected most of it. Other than not benching players for the lack of effort on defense.

RE: Looking Ahead to Next Year
Rice may return everyone but C Andrew Drone. Drone played a lot during sophomore and junior years, but played sparingly this past year. The only other two question marks are Egor Koulechov and Robert Martin Jr, both SG/SF. Koulechov (first-team all conference) transferred in from AzSt, so he is graduating in May and is considering going pro (either NBA or, more likely, Europe). Robert Martin Jr. is a scorer from Boston who played at the Tilton School (Nerlens Noel, Wayne Selden, Georges Niang, etc.) who looked OK at the beginning of the season but barely played from January onward... I don't think he was hurt, because he always dressed. His dad is an assistant at Northeastern so he might be a transfer candidate.

Because we only have one scholarship that is definitely open, we didn't sign anyone in the fall. Assuming we lose either Koulechov or Martin in addition to Drone, I would expect us to sign a guy out of high school and try to get a grad transfer... Probably one guard and one forward/center.

We should be good no matter what though as we return 4/5 starters and key contributors off the bench like Lott, Douglas, Harrison, and Adams.

Returning Players:

Corey Douglas, 6'8" F, SO
Tim Harrison, 6'8" F, SO
Marquez Letcher-Ellis, 6'7" F, JR
Austin Meyer, 6'9" F, SO
Ako Adams, 6'2" G, SO
Marcus Jackson, 6'3" G, RS SR
Connor Cashaw, 6'5" G, JR
Chad Lott, 6'3" G, RS SO
Bishop Mency, 6'5" G, SR
Marcus Evans, 6'2" G, JR
Grant Youngkin, 6'3" G, SO (Walk-On)
Addison Owen, 6'5" G, SO (Walk-On)

Maybe Returning:

Egor Koulechov, 6'5" G/F, RS SR
Robert Martin, 6'6" G/F, SO

Gone:

Andrew Drone, 6'10" C

Do you think Tony Mitchell was the first or even the last to be "VASTLY overrated as a player"? Point is the game isn't player or won based off of HS rankings.

Because the entire basis of your post is that COACHING MATTERS. You were asserting that North Texas didn't win because of coaching. I am merely throwing a wrinkle that it is entirely possible they did not win because a highly rated player did not live up to the billing. The facts are Johnny Jones took UNT to the tournament with a very good team the year before Mitchell. He also got that same UNT team back to the Sun Belt finals after a disappointing year with Mitchell. I think that it is possible UNT's problem was that Tony Mitchell simply wasn't as good as advertised and not the coaching.

I am fully aware WKU has a talented class that could be overrated. And if that does happen, then your COACHING MATTERS mantra would still be irrelevant. However, if those players go on to achieve great accolades and we still aren't winning at a high clip then you can beat your chest and say "I told you so".

Personally, I'm not the kind of person to trash my own program or coach. You can go on pretending your passive-agressive jabs at Stansbury aren't meant to slam him, but we all know you are throwing out the bait so you can prove us all wrong. Or, in the case where he wins big, can come back and say "show me one instance where I said I wanted him to fail". I'm over your little games. It gets old after a while.
