There is a substantial gap between the P5 and G5, and my guess is that it will only grow larger.

You can only have so many diamond encrusted toilet seats before diminishing returns.

The 11 AAC schools with figures (Navy doesn't) are in the top 15 non P5 schools, along with BYU, SDSU, Fresno and Hawaii.

RE: FBS Athletic Dept Total Revenues
From an accounting standpoint those balance sheet numbers are not that useful. All they show is the relative budgets

Since you are looking at revenue, I suggest you take the total revenue figure and subtract the subsidy to show actual income (gate, media, concessions, rights fees, distributions, donations, etc).

Further, the subsidy belongs in three parts:
1. borrowing (non-institutional, such as Cal's stadium debt),
2. student athletic fees
3. institutional transfers

IMO the first two are fine, although schools need to have some responsibility here. Cal spent way too much money and did things not necessary in their renovation forced by Loma Preita damage that basically doubled the annual debt service, resulting in the program unnecessarily bleeding red ink. But if kept in reason and funded by a proper plan (donations usually, annual giving), it allows capital improvements. The second, a student athletic fee, is fair, as these are generally voted on by the students themselves, or otherwise public and upfront -- the buyer is aware.

Institutional transfers are troubling, possibly illegal (in at least some cases), and ethically "challenged." This is tax money for college education being redirected. A certain amount is probably fair, since even a D-III program requires a couple million to run and operate facilities. But when you start transferring amounts of $100m to $200m a decade for a program, or in some larger states as much a $1B a decade for entertainment, that calls into question the use of tax money. This was less an issue 15 years ago, when say UConn (just an example, I could pick anyone of 100 programs) was transferring $3m for 30,000 students, it amounted to $100 each you could justify it as a small advertising fee; but now transfers of $17m you are getting into a hidden fee of nearly $600 per student (and this is not the worst, schools like Eastern Michigan top $1000 per student). You could fund 500 additional Connecticut students free ride for that, including hiring additional professors, student research, labs, et al (probably more, if you don't have to add building space). Whatever, I don't mean to debate the merits and ethics of this, rather not have this show up on the "revenue".

Private schools can do what they want, buyer beware. It's a competitive market, choose where you attend.

Anyway, I'd like to see the list with the subsidies removed looks like, and also each school's institutional subsidy total.

Of course they're not illegal. Almost every public school does them, as well.

No more illegal than "transferring" money from the school's general fund to the library's operation budget.

And this database is the gold standard for this information. I will always trust these numbers over the USA Today database.

Ethical questions at a minimum. Criminal if it is determined the school leadership is blatantly ignoring state guidelines (which in many cases it is) or violating fiduciary responsibility. The Library is not the same as an assistant Football coach. Many States have laws and rules (California is one) which say athletics must not come out of state education funds. Transfers violate that, at least at some level. But it simply has not been tested in court.

I also think the scale of the transfers and the access to the return are at stake here.

But fundamentally, what you are looking at is a balance sheet. The numbers are always made to balance, debt is covered by some mechanism, be it cash transfer or borrowing. Go look at any companies release and even when they are losing money, "revenue" = "expenses." That is why they always say to look at cash flow and debt levels. For Athletics, debts via transfer are often forgiven, "in secret ceremony." But they are effectively negative cash flow. They are not income.

Subsidies are not good in any form, whether it's for rich people buying Tesla's (the total subsidy is close to $40,000 per car) or Athletics.

This USA Today list breaks out subsidies, both by percentage and by total dollars.

Income statements and balance sheets are different. Balance sheets balance (equity = assets - liabilities)

Agreed. From the spot checking I've done, these numbers seem to closely align with operating budgets posted on university websites moreso than USAToday numbers which tend to skew expenses to the higher side (to offset more inclusive revenue like facilities and other categories).

The data for the other schools is on the website. This report, however, only includes FBS schools. Some basketball schools have higher budgets than many of these schools.

Every time subsidies are brought up people need to be reminded of what subsidies may entail and one important reason why public universities are subsidized more than privates.

Public universitues typically have a resident rate (x)and non-resident tuition rate (y) while privates have a flat rate. Most athletic departments "pay" the university for scholarships at the in state rate. There is a recorded subsidy for the athletic department for each non-resident scholarship (n) where there is a total subsidy of n(y-x). The more a state school recruits out of state athletes relative to the general student body (anywhere besides FLA, TX, or CA) the larger the subsidy accrued.

You can only have so many diamond encrusted toilet seats before diminishing returns.

If so, we've never yet reached it in any aspect of academia, including academia-athletics.

Universities have an insatiable appetite for $$$ in all areas.

UConn has greater income than thirteen P5 schools. Impressive, though I wonder what the numbers are without student subsidies.

RE: FBS Athletic Dept Total Revenues
There should be a subsidy. It would be terrible management to not have one for several reasons:
1) subsidies strengthen athletic programs (at most schools - not the super rich), which provide value to the academic side (exposure, student life, alumni donations, etc). So the academic side should subsidize to the extent that the benefits of their subsidy outweigh the cost.
2) the athletic side pays tuition for those scholarships that it provides. Part of the tuition covers fixed costs for the incremental students. In theory, the AD should cover the variable costs + any special VC's related to any hits in academic prestige related to athletic admissions. The rest of the payment is essentially an athletic subsidy of the academic side. A reverse subsidy from the university to the AD nets everything back out.

I"m pretty sure USA Today uses what's reported to the NCAA. There really shouldn't be any discrepancies between the reporting but in some cases there may be.
