Fair enough. Didn't realize it had a 50m pool ... I must've been thinking of a different facility. That makes sense though, as UND has had competitive swim program for some time.

UND will be just fine. Even if the participation (unduplicated) levels were around 56% male 44% female, so what? That's not a big deal.

You don't need beach volleyball, to have a competitive indoor program. Minnesota doesn't.

Pretty much any midwest DI school can just go to the nearest grocery store and find 5'10" or taller players. The game is very popular in the midwest. UND will be fine, and NDSU will get back to where it was.

Minn St-Moorhead had to fundraise for both men's and women's DI hockey for its state board to allow it. It only made 75% of the goal of nearly $30 mill, so the state said no. Women's hockey seems mandated by Minnesota authorities if a male team exists.

The real problems, both in terms of money and participation, is football.

All the Minn DII's have football. So it's tough to have football and just men's hockey.

I'd like to see Duluth drop football and women's hockey, and move to DI. Joining the Summit and Big Ten in M hockey.

There's no way UMD or the MN State schools will ever drop football. They're more likely to drop all scholarships and go D-III instead.

St Cloud disproves your claim.

They were set to drop football a few years ago, but then backed off.

I could easily see some of them doing it ... the ones with DI hockey.

Well that's as maybe, but no one is moving up, ever. The Minnesota Legislature is going to see to that.

Disagree. Dropping football would be the key. Omaha is the precedent.

Dropping W hockey would be enabled by dropping football, and those would be two big dollar vacuums removed.

too bad. always hate to see fewer scholarship opportunities for kids. und is certainly not going fbs or aligning with some big sky move up at this point, if they ever were

I am not here to say that UND is going FBS in the near future, but 16 is minimum number of sports for FBS and with these cuts UND is at 17 with a leaner athletic department. 2 days ago they were in worse condition financially for a transition to FBS than they will be moving forward, IF FBS is in UND's future.

St Cloud St actually has Nordic skiing that competes against DI schools. Instead of women's ice hockey, have women's Nordic skiing and women's lacrosse. It would be much cheaper and it jives with the MSHSA sports, as womens Nordic and women's lax are hs sponsored in the state.

The estimated shortfall in UND women's hockey for this year is $1.9 million. UND is being creamed by the MSP media because of this "sexist" cut. After all, the state of Minnesota is so enlightened that their schools wouldn't cut WIH. Never mind that the UMD WIH coach has a lawsuit against Minnesota for unlawful firing for causing tirades and drama where ever she went.

RE: North Dakota cutting women's Hockey
A lot of the bad press came because social media was reporting the cut before UND gave the players notice. Todd Milewski, a Badger beat reporter, tweeted it first, and then a barrage of tweets followed.

How did Milewski find out? The WCHA has to be notified if a team is leaving. The WCHA in turn notifies all their schools, as it might have to expand and certainly change their schedules. My bet was when Barry Alvarez got the call, he or his women's coach, immediately got on the phone with Milewski, who broke the story to the world before UND players knew. Reporters pride themselves in scooping everyone else, so Wisconsin gets a blue goat ribbon.

UND just doesn't have the mega budget of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio St, and Penn St, to "artificially" support W Hockey.

ESPN's Outside The Lines is calling UND's dropping of women's hockey the biggest underreported story of the week. Never mind the the WSU, Washington Post, Deadspin and numerous other papers have said this was a shameful act. They compare it to dropping UCONN women's basketball. Never mind that UND has never even won a conference championship or NCAA game, but dropping a women's sport that has produced Olympians fits their victim agenda.

UNO also had to drop wrestling and replace both sports with men's soccer and golf. Saint Cloud State might encounter the same dilemma, although they do have golf.

Well, I'm not nearly as interested in St Cloud and Mankato as I am in Duluth.
