Interesting: Pac-12 extends Commissioner Larry Scott till 2022

With the issue of the PAC12 Network not producing as thought...I guess it isn't a big enough issue to not extend him. He had 1 year left on the existing contract.

Had he pulled the Pac-16 plan, he would've been considered one of, if not, the greatest commissioners of all time. He was seen as a visionary and got hired to expand the conference and increase tv exposure and revenue. He's been better than Tom Hansen, who seemed stuck in a bygone era and was part of the good ol' boy club.

Due to the 2 year pre-notification requirements of the Big 12, I would say that 2022 is about right for Scott. If he has one more shot at 16 in him the timing and the consequences of not having made those moves in the past may all be in his favor. If he can't make it happen then 2022 is also about right for his exit.

Meh, Scott has done a good job with the PAC. Could he have done better? Maybe. Is the PAC12 network a failure? No.

Scott and the PAC are running their own network and not selling it to FOX or ESPN, right or wrong they're going to stay the course and see his vision thru.

As the article states, the PAC will be in negotiations for a new TV contract in 2023 and Scott's contract is up in 2022. If the PAC12'S distribution per school is $40 million+ behind the next closest conference at that time, then Scott will probably be fired.

Until then....

There is also the equity sale which is probably about the same time. I suspect he leaves once the sale is done, as the partner who buys in will take over the programming management, which is the premium he is paid over other commissioners.

The Pac 12 is saddled with late game starting times for much of the country.

Plus, there are over 3x as many eyeballs in the EST and CST vs the Mountain and Pacific time zones.

It simply is not as attractive a TV property as some of the other leagues.

Agreed, based on his past performance he deserved an extension, and this gives him time to make one more big move to boost the PAC.

Sure, there has to be disappointment with the very sluggish PACN start, but the alternative was to fire him/find someone new, a drastic step.

I think 2022 is a good time-frame for him. It gives the PACN a couple more years, and I wouldn't be surprised if they started rolling it out digitally, allowing you to subscribe just to their network, or log in using your existing cable/satellite provider to access the channel.

If he can't get the network carried more or get more subscribers via an online network, I think they let him go and bring in someone else at that time. That's still a couple years before the Big 12's GOR expire and would be about the time they would need to be making a big push for UT/OU if they do want to expand. They could either give him another extension then and push for expansion, or find someone new and contemplate expansion again.

I personally kind of think they should stay out of the Texas market and stay focused on the West Coast. I could see them eventually adding Hawaii and playing yearly games in Asia/Australia to try to grow their market that way. Perhaps an annual football game in Australia, an annual weekend in China with several basketball games, and an annual baseball series in Japan. No school would have to travel internationally twice in the same year, and I'd probably make sure the same team wouldn't play at Hawaii in a season they play internationally.

I know there can be issues getting all players passports so I'm not sure the feasibility of my idea, but if I was the Pac Commissioner that's what I'd be looking into.

He has made some moves in the Asian markets. Those are going to take some time to develop. If they do pan out they could be a huge boost for the PAC networks.

If not already, there will definitely be watch parties one day in China for all the Chinese alumni of major universities that recruit in China, like PAC, Big Ten, etc. schools.

Absolutely correct, as of 2017.

In 20 years or so the central and east time zones will not be as far ahead in population. There is a lot of people moving away from the middle of the country and they are migrating to the South and West.
In 2016 5 states from the PAC were in the top 10 in population growth, Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, and Colorado. Also Utah led the country in growth when measured as a percentage of the total population.

I have said it before on this board, IMO in the not to distant future all of the P conferences will be under 1 tv contract. I think it makes the most sense for the networks
