Rumor has it they lost count of the shattered backboards:

Dude tried a turnaround on me in the lane at NAS & I sent that ish back in his face. Of course, I was 19 & he was 15, but it was still cool cuz I knew what he'd become.

Not a bad bunch -- with the front court intact. I remember some opposing (losing) coach griping about "those two wrestlers."

For 1988 standards it was really good.

Bench had a lot of size and shooting.

Starting lineup was unique and had experience - least experienced player was maybe the best in EP.

Would've been interesting to see that team come March.

I don't think Cheyenne was on that team. Prop 48 I believe

Gibson mentioned in this article from Dec 1987 as averaging 10 per game. Did he get suspended for the spring semester?

Also worth a read to get a feel for how chaotic that season was:

"But another in a seemingly endless series of nightmares swirls around second-year Memphis coach Larry Finch. Finch sent the Tigers onto the floor opposite the high-scoring Braves without leading scorer and rebounder Sylvester Gray (15.2 points, 8.2 rebounds) and center Marvin Alexander (8.6, 5.3)."

I don't think he was suspended. I just thought he was prop 48 for his first year like Penny was. But my memory may be shot.

Edit: just looked it up he was a sophomore in 87-88

Strongest dude I have ever tangled with on a basketball court.

I loved this team. It was pure blue collar attitudes. Alexander knew how block out and control the paint. Gray was a high flying beast. Douglas, Boyd and Perry were all unselfish playmakers who could create shots. I would take this team today in a heart beat.

Bailey grew into a fine center. Not a big scorer but he could hit the boards and play D. You got what you needed from the bench.

Thank you Elliot. For your time with the Tigers. Thank you for being a Memphis ambassador and continuing to have a big impact on the city. For your love of art, for your endless philanthropy, for your strong voice of reason.

And thanks for your mention of Michael Toney. A realities unknown behind the sceans mentor to many inner city youth, several who made their mark on Memphis basketball. Also a long time MCS and SCS employee.
