RE: Jack Whitman to transfer
A few things to consider.

1) Both Seacat and Whitman are true on the block post players. Our offense has the center at the top of the key setting picks. Fits more athletic big men.
2) Team chemistry this year was bad and now you have three players bailing on the program. Schlotman isn't transferring because nobody knows if he's any good or not due to zero playing time. The job thing is nice for him, but maybe wasn't his first choice.
3) Tribe changed speed of the game considerably over the last TWO years. Some of the players like those leaving, plus Burchfield, who play better in a half court set get left out.
4) Everyone is speculating that Whitman dropped the bomb on Shaver. We don't know that.
5) This is/was Spring Break time at the college and would have been a good time for Jack to i) figure his situation out, and ii) contact some other programs.

I'm not at all worried about the center position next year on offense. Rowley is the perfect fit to split time at the 4 and 5. It's defense that scares me.

One thing being overlooked in this thread. Jack's major, which he will receive his Bachelor's degree in this May, is Kinesiology & Health Sciences. W&M does not have a Graduate program in this field. May be as simple as that.

I would think that if Tony and staff knew this was coming then Jack would have been honored at Senior night like Mike S. was.

Really surprised and bummed by this. Best wishes to Jack who played his heart out last year. Wish we had one more year with you.

I truly wonder where we are going to find an additional competent post player or two for next year. We don't want to just sign someone to sign someone, but we are really in great need there now.

RE: Jack Whitman to transfer
There is no way around it...Whitman's departure is a significant blow for next year's team. He was the most improved player on this year's team and had some very good games that we won because of him.

Unless Shaver and staff can come up with a freshman center to join this incoming class who can play
some immediately to provide Nathan Knight some support we are in a tough situation. Paul Rowley is talented but does not have the bulk and strength, in my opinion, to play a true center in Shaver's offense.

I, by the bye, do not read anything nefarious into Whitman and Schlotman both leaving. Schlotman was not going to play much at all next season, will be graduating in May, and had a sensational job offer.

RE: Jack Whitman to transfer
Cj Gettys and Canyon Barry both skipped out on 5th years at their respective schools last year, and lots of hand-wringing and teeth-gnashing followed.

Uncw and CoC finished 1st and 2nd last year.

We will be fine.

I honestly wish Jack all the best. If his intent is to transfer somewhere where he can taste the NCAA tournament just one time in his life, can you really blame him for leaving? It clearly doesn't happen at WM, and he's tried here for 4 years.

Calvin Baker, on the other hand, can still go F himself.

Also, no guarantees, unfortunately, in the 'Burg that just because you have a year of eligibility left, you will get accepted in a W&M grad program.

I was a kinesiology major as well and, depending on the direction he takes that major, W&M has no graduate program. A popular direction is physical therapy

Continuing to think through the Whitman situation and what Jack's next move may be. With his ability to score in the low post, I think he could definitely fit in at one of the lower echelon ACC or SEC schools, with the right half-court system. Or if his ambition is to play in the NCAA tourney, he could play at any number of mid-majors who have a legit shot at winning their conference tourney.

No big deal...we only lose 3 of 5 starters. I'm sure we'll take the CAA by surprise next season.

Thought you'd be more concerned with Appy's program. Glad to see you and Daniel Dixon like this announcement.

RE: Jack Whitman to transfer
With the numbers Jack put up this year he will end up in a high major conference as a reserve big. Grad transfers are always overvalued. Can't blame him for wanting to get a taste of the tourney. Also knight was going to take his starting spot.

Rowley at the 5??? What part of his 100lb body is going to be able to set screens?

Yeah, there is no part of Rowley that makes a good 5. Quote honestly, I'd put Oliver Tot in there before Rowley. Rowley's game is well suited at the 3 or 4, and his size presents nice match-up problems.

Milon is going to average 40 pts a game. Nothing to worry about.

Nobody is going to play basketball while pursuing a PT degree or, for that matter, an Athletic Grad degree, another popular degree following a kinesiology bachelors. Both, I think, are too time consuming on their own.

I wish Jack well in whatever he chooses.

And sadly that wouldn't mean much when our defense allows 100+ PPG next season...

Gettys left UNCW last year for Rutgers which allowed Cacoak to emerge. As long as we can get a serviceable backup for Knight, and he learns to not foul, he could have a similar impact on our team next year

Does Tony or Tribe Athletics ever issue statements when players transfer out?

Did Tony ever mention Hunter's departure publically?

I'm hoping this truly is just a pursuit of a different grad degree or even desire to try and play at a higher level for a year. Would be very interested in Tony's perspective.

Jack seemed to give his all on the court last year and didn't show any discontent publically if there was/is any.

RE: Jack Whitman to transfer
For all of you discussing the grad degree stuff, just remember that just because someone enrolls in grad school doesn't mean that there is intention to graduate in two years. I'll bet a lot of these folks are just taking advantage of the transfer rules to play an extra year for a) fun, or b) to get ready to play pro ball over seas. I'm not saying that Jack is in that boat, but many are.
