RE: Jeremiah Martin
Tough crowd.
Martin's first year as full time starter and with actual coaching. Maybe have a bit of patience with the kid.
From the CA:
Martin leads Memphis in minutes played and leads the AAC in steals per game (two). He also ranks among the top five in the league in assists (4.4 per game) and assist-to-turnover ratio.

Me, too. I was happy with his play this year & think he can be a solid PG for us. Needs to work on a few things, but I just didnt see him as our problem thus year. It would be hard for a freshman to come in next year and be better than him next year.

The posters who think he's a back up bench player wouldn't know a basketball if it hit them in their face. Tell Cincinnati that he's a bench player.

Martin's best games were during last 10 games or so when Tubby finally moved him off the ball in half court offense and gave him room to cut or drive to basket. He was not capable of running half court offense this past season.

I'm not saying that less heralded players can't improve, but let's not kid ourselves. A young EP would have eaten Martin alive.
With one hand tied behind his back.
I don't know whether Jeremiah could stop Perry, but I doubt Jeremiah could get the ball across halfcourt against him. EP had the quickest hands I ever saw. Dude was averaging 7 steals per game fairly late in the season one year.
Perry was a great defender, but 7 steals per game seems way high, unless he fell way off late in the year you referenced. He averaged 2.2, 2.1, 2.7 and 2.7 in his four years.

Yeah, it was 4-5 games into the season. Against slaw, probably. But I remember an opposing coach referring to him as "that skinny kid in the aviator goggles" when EP snatched a bunch of steals against them.

He Predetermines what he is going to do on the drive, can not go right and lacks a shot.
First is easily fixed
Second and Third will take a bunch of work in the offseason.
He can be a very good player for us next year if fixes those issues and is able to defend quicker guards.

He seemed to have a bunch against Louisville that one time. DickyV called the chicken hawk.

I think he will progress just fine. This year was like his first year of playing. Because he didn't play as a freshman for Wonder Boy. I like his game and think he will work on his right hand and shooting this offseason.

I thought Kemp's problem was that he decided he would rather be a stepper than a baller.

IMHO, one thing we lack is some of that traditional memphis athleticism from the past.
J Martin's speed while driving to the basket is the closest thing this group has to that athleticism.
Martin made improvement this season.
And, i look forward to his being a part of our improvement next season.

It's not what drives this board nowadays, and it's not what many of us want to hear -- we want a quick fix coach, a quick fix recruiting class, a quick fix schedule change, etc. -- but it's probably the most rational, pragmatic approach to our current situation -- hoping for incremental improvement over time, the way it normally happens when we're on an uptick. I just hope we're on an uptick.
But still, I like MT.org . . . so , , , if we could just find another Dana and another Lee, Bedford, and Turner, we'd be great with what we already have! Don't we have a coach without a contract and three schollies open if Dedric leaves? C'mon, ambassadors, make it happen!

You might be right backer, but take me for example. Opie, as you call him, me wonder boy, I couldn't stand Josh. Throwing out the Tic and Johnny Show, he's by far my least favorite coach. I was extremely happy when GT came and got him. That said, yes josh wore my patience out but the second he was out of here my patience was restored. Just the news of a coach you can't stand anymore getting fired or pushed out should energize ones excitement for the program again.
That was an awesome post by MTigerBlue.

That's a big part of what's missing. How long since we've seen a well executed alley-oop. Wasn't happening with this group. Offense is built around the Lawsons at the 3 & 4, and that ain't their game. Markel showed some early and mid season, but reverted badly. Jeremiah just wasn't ready yet.
Just posted in another thread that I did a quick comparison of JM's stats against Pookie and Charlie Moore this year. JM compares favorably. Work hard this summer and he'll be ready next year.
