RE: New Athletic Director
I think we are a tough crowd on here.

We all need to give you a big welcome, Ms. Huge, as the newest member to the Tribe Family, and wish you a great and long career with our beloved school.

I am sure it won't be an easy first few years: with our academic focus, knowing soon you will be reporting to a new President, facing the challenge of finding a successful replacement when Jimmye Laycock decides to end his legacy, dealing with the added family pressure of a sibling alum, permanently stepping into a head AD position when there are so few women AD's in this country, navigating the positives and negatives of a conservative, public institution, while trying to effect positive change and direction in an ever evolving and uncertain college athletics landscape. We all hope and pray for your success, and offer our support to help W&M be excellent in athletics, as it supports our overall mission.

RE: New Athletic Director
I believe some on this post may need a vacation....or perhaps should take one anyway, and leave their laptop at home. Here is a video put out today by the Tribe Sports guys (that some of you are bashing) offering some insight into Samantha Huge. IMO the video is well done and the Athletic office seems to be doing a very good job with the process in how they are introducing/welcoming Ms. Huge. I have to mention, those that dumped on the Athletic department and/or the process in how this is being handled, don't have a clue as to all of the the behind-the-scenes effort that went into it. Let's stay positive....and give her a chance.

RE: New Athletic Director
The video has 94 views. I was one of the 94. Do you want me to put my laptop away, then there'll be 93 views?

And I viewed it after Tribal brought our attention to the overall posting, but before I got my e-mail from the Department, and before your post telling some of us to put our laptops away.

The technical quality of the video is excellent. The SID portion of the Department has been beyond fantastic over the past several years. Kudos!

The roll out has been fine. Just a few jokes were made over some over-hype for tomorrow. Not a big deal.

The new AD, in the video, said that she is a listener. From my point of view, that is a perfect start. I would tell her this.

Conference affiliation. This is a problem unique to W&M. The CAA as presently constituted works, but what is the back-up plan. What is the plan if an opportunity presents itself?

Football. Jimmye has spoiled us. Post-Jimmye success can not be taken for granted.

Men's hoops. What's the vision? How to improve the Kap game day experience? How to improve the OOC schedule?

Olympic sports. A true treasure. How to maintain?

Student attendance. A national problem whose effects will show up decades from now in terms of reduced alumni support.

Alumni. It's not all about the money and donations.

The feathers. I would like a local Tribe contacted, approval given for the feathers, and a return of the feathers with the blessing of the NCAA. Give me a good faith effort in this regard, and I'm on board 100%. What is good for Utah and Florida State and Illinois is good for W&M.

Tribe gear. This needs to get ramped up.

Cary / Zable. Bring back the souvenir cups handed out by vendors in the aisles. Rescind the halftime no re-entry rule.

Marching band. It's time for a marching band to return.

Tribe athletics history. This needs to be promoted. We tend to keep it hidden.

Conference cooperation. We need to sit down with the SoCon and AE, and help each other out in non-conference scheduling, especially men's hoops.

I wish TD a long, healthy, and happy retirement, and thank him for his service.

I look forward to a long and successful term for SH, and wish her well.

If she needs any advice, she can just monitor this board!

:-)

RE: New Athletic Director
The video is great introduction for Ms Huge. She certainly has the command, the background and experience, and speaks with conviction and understanding.

I know, from talking with two members of the committee, that the selection committee ran a thorough, exhausting selection process that involved some outstanding candidates: for Ms Huge to be selected from such a process speaks volumes about her qualifications. The words people mention about her are vision, communication with people, positiveness, and attention to detail.

Here's hoping she's at our College for many, many successful years.

These deals are team specific. I believe our women's bball team is Under Armour, and our Football is Nike. Other teams set their own deals.

Right, no one (that I've seen) bashed the selection. What's comical is that everyone who cared knew days before tribeathletics made the official announcement. I don't have a problem with that but don't act like you're announcing a big surprise.

Well, she said all the right things during her press conference a few minutes ago.

I feel GOOD coming out of that press conference. I certainly thought Huge impressed. I'm excited to see how she starts her tenure.

The band idea is a good one. The A&M band is without peer. Not even a close second. The pep band in basketball is rockin to the max. The chants, team involvement, electronics, are all world!! If some of these percolate down to Williamsburg everyone will benefit. Ms Huge will be revered and move on to something 'really big'. Let's hope so.

Taylor was terrific. Used the word "win" a lot. He was blunt in saying that he expects every sport to row their own oar. Maybe there is hope for men's hoops funding. May he never retire!

Larry (head of committee) gave the reasons, and was not convincing, IMO. Football program and men's hoops program not really mentioned. I got concerned that this was a PC pick.

SH then spoke. She was really, really good. Academics and success on the field / court. Says this is her destination. Said all the right things. Gave family reasons. Good vibes. Nothing about vision. She intends to "listen" right out of the box. Told Bobby to make sure her parents didn't leave without becoming members of the Tribe Club!

Second to last question about gender. She handled it very well. Here's hoping she breaks the glass ceiling and leads the Tribe to athletics success.

Last question was about W&M's status as a mid-major. She gave a non-answer. Here's hoping that in six months, or a year, she gives a dynamite answer to that question.

There were PC aspects to today that trouble me, having watched Rutgers go PC in a recent AD hire that did not work. I hope I'm all wet on this. I hope that this hire is successful, and that the PC aspects are an appendage, rather than a cause celebre.

Very good start!

What is this "PC" business? Is the insinuation that because she is female that she is a "PC" hire?

That didn't take long.

Are you insinuating that because SH is a female, one can't question the reason SH was hired?

Female AD is rare so we've got that going on, but the same is true in business at the CEO level. Gender/Sex has more to do with the qualified applicant pool as opposed to forecast of future success. Debbie Yow is probably the biggest name at a major school, but there aren't that many others. Columbia has/had a female AD if I'm remembering correctly

Of course. As always, your straw man has fearlessly spoken truth to power and exposed the great and unfair advantages that women have as administrators in college athletics.

Charlotte has had one for 25 years. She's awful. Nice as can be, though.

Edit: I should say she's awful in the revenue sports. She's done a great job with men's soccer, golf, baseball, etc.

I think you need to stop right there. You keep going and I'm going to start to believe that this was a PC hire, which would be unfair to SH and to W&M.

So your belief on why Huge was hired is dependent on what Tribe2011 posts on the message boards?
