RE: UNCW vs. UVA 2017 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament
As I said earlier, this game very well will be decided by the under 12 timeout or halfway through the first half. Early shots falling favors UNCW. UVA leading in a low scoring affair will only favor UVA. If you dont jump on them early, this game smells doom to me for UNCW

I am worried that UVA has faced up tempo teams like Louisville and UNC and was able to slow them down - beat both. I hope we can rattle them with some 3's early in the game!

Go Hawks!!

I didn't see the Louisville game, but Hoops is right. Louisville is long and athletic, but they are one of the worst shooting teams I've ever seen. I don't know if the percentages back that up, but in the 4 game I've seen them play this year, they're awful. Carolina isn't a bad shooting team, but they're inside-out for certain. \\

Carolina had their way against UVA in Chapel Hill.

UNCW is definitely different than both of those teams. While I don't know what to expect, I'm pleased that we're not facing a team with an athletic center. Cacok and Chuck can guard Salt, I think. Stylistically they scare me, and Bennett is a good (albeit overrated) coach. From a personnel standpoint, I'm most concerned about LP.

Good points! We have better shooters than UNC or Louisville...we just need to find a way to use that to our advantage. I think we're doomed if we get into a half court type game. Somehow we need to get some fast breaks and 3's in transition. I think Talley might be a big factor in this game. He may have trouble getting to the rim but I think we really need him to keep the game at a fast pace.

RE: UNCW vs. UVA 2017 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament
Seems to me all of that is why Keatts let this team "live by the 3, die by the 3" all season long. That's the one way we can gain an advantage over these big-time teams. Not many teams have a 4-guard lineup, with all 4 capable of knocking down 3's like we can.

We were 14th in the nation in three-pointers made, the most of any team in the field other than Iowa St, Michigan and UCLA, and our shooting has gotten better over the course of the season.

Agree about having B-Ball people on the committee, it just doesn't make sense that their isn't. I'd like to see them be consistent as they are not at all right now. Something that is important to them this year might not be next season. Teams have a moving target.

Shoot like ya'll did against W&M in the CAA tourney and UNCW will win.

And in fairness, a line of 8.5 for a slow paced team like UVA is a monster number and is a line that screams to bet UVA. In my eyes there is no way the line should be that high, but Vegas always seems to know.

Agreed the line is big, but the good news is the line has only moved a half point from 8 to 8.5 since the line came out, which tells me that there isn't many sharp bets going to either team.

Let's see if the line comes back down, continues to grow, or stay the same.

They're showing the game at Trask. Doors open at 11:40. And they'll have concessions.

RE: UNCW vs. UVA 2017 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament
A few keys in my mind.

1. Press. Press. Press. We may get TO's which would be great, and would allow us to push the pace and score off the turnovers or at least get more possessions. Even if we aren't getting TO's, we can eat up 6-8 seconds off the shot clock and force them to set up their offense and shoot quicker than they want.

2. Push the pace on every defensive rebound and try to get to the bucket on the drive before they can set up. If they play one of their big men at the 5, Cacock can run them off the floor and demoralize them with some thunderous alley oops. The crowd will go bonkers if we can show them acrobatics or some 3's in transition.

3. Chuck will have the size to defend the post, and against the deliberate offense of UVA he won't hurt us much when he comes in for Cacock. Rest Cacock and save him from foul trouble as much as possible. I'd take him out before tv timeouts and keep him well rested. Keep him at about 28 minutes and allow him to play hard when he's in with hopefully limited fouls.

4. Talley is going to be key in this game. If Mosely isn't hot from the start and hitting 3's, bring in Talley to push the pace and get up the court for drives or dimes. He is easily the best at making us go.

Interesting article on how to score on the pack line defense of UVA. The recipe for success sure sounds like a team we follow.....:-)

Good find ok the link, and I agree with you Talley could be huge, not only to push the pace but the drive and kick. Bottom line if we shoot well we win IMO

I agree with that assessment. But I still think the two biggest factors are the type of officiating we get and making a good percentage of threes to keep them honest on defense.

Good luck to you all. UVA is my second favorite team in Virginia but I am pulling for you all. Should be a great match up. If you get to 60 you win.

Just a guess, prob grew up a UVA fan and attended JMU. You know, like half the UNCW student body with UNC and Duke. Don't have to like it but it is what it is.

Yeah, but at least UNC and Duke are elite basketball programs. UVA is just....meh... at sports. Though I guess if you're old enough to have been around during the Ralph Samson days that would change things.

RE: UNCW vs. UVA 2017 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament
One thing to note about UVA's offense is that they're efficient, which tells me this will be a high scoring contest given the volume of shots we take and allow. They shoot .393 from three, which is pretty high for a team that has only scored 66.6 points per game on the season. Kyle Guy has been really efficient for a freshman, shooting 50-99 (.505) from beyond the arc off the bench. Watch out for him.

We do fairly well at defending the 3 ball so I'm not saying I'm worried, just thinking out loud on what kind of game this will be.

Cocky UVA fans? Surely you jest.

They are so cocky they can't even get the team they are playing right...
