How is the Western Athletic Conference winner in the east regional? too bad they are not in West

It's a conspiracy, I'm sure of it.

Highest rated 3 seed vs highest rated 14 seed according to kenpom. East just had too many ACC teams and they weren't going to send New Mexico St to Florida when FGCU still available.

I personally think Kenpom is totally inaccurate. He has no PAC 12 team in the top 10 not even in the top 15, and they have (1) 2 seed and (2) 3 seeds. He also has San Diego St at 78 that's above Colorado St and NMSU which doesn't make sense.

NMSU brings in the two 4-stars, AJ Harris and LJ Figueroa.

GCU has post season eligibility.

Utah Valley has Nielson and that 4 star from Arizona comes back from his misson im pretty sure this year.

Bako has mostly everyone back.

UTRGV and SU were very young but have another year under their belt. SU brings in the 3rd best player in the state, Nate Pryor who Dollar has had committed since his freshman year. 7'3 Menzies will be back and hopefully healthy all year. He dominated non-conference play but missed all of conference play. Means, Kavas, Uleano will be a year older and praying Montoya can find a way to he healthy.

UMKC will take a downswing and Chiraq State will very likely be terrible as always. But overall, 6 of the 8 WAC schools will be competitive with a legit chance of winning the conference

I think there will be four schools battling for the WAC titile next season. And they will be as strong if not stronger... New Mexico State, Grand Canyon, Cal State Bakersfield, and Utah Valley.

Guesstimated starting lines ups for 2017-18...

NMSU Starter: AJ Harris, Sidy Ndir, Braxton Huggins, Eli Chuha, Johnathon Wilkins.
Top Reservers: Jemerrio Jones, LJ Figueroa, Jermaine Haley, Marlon Jones

GCU Starters: Fiifi Aidoo, Josh Braun, Oscar Frayer, Matt Jackson, Keonté Vernon
Top Reserves: Shaq Carr, Gerard Martin, Kerwin Smith, Boubacar Toure

CSUB Starters: Brent Wrapp, Damiyne Durham, Tazé Moore, Shon Briggs, Moataz Aly
Top Reserves: Rickey Holden, Jarkel Joiner, James Suber, Fallou Ndoye

Utah Valley Starters: Brandon Randolph, Conner Toolson, Kenneth Ogbe, Zach Nelson, Isaac Neilson.
Top Reserves: Cory Calvert, Hayden Schenck, Jake Toolson, Akolda Manyang

Looking at these four teams, NMSU and Utah Valley are really deep with overall talent. GCU has some key players returning but they will need to replace Russell. And, Bakersfield will need to develop some of their youth off the bench.

No way Aidoo over Shaq Carr. Carr is no Russell but he's better than Aidoo. What do the GCU guys think?

RE: NMSU gets 14 seed, plays Baylor in Tulsa
Next year we will see if the young team Dollar has put together is going to turn into something. I just worry they wont be good enough to win the WAC anytime soon

PG: Morgan Means SO
SG: Zack Moore Jr walk-on
SF: Matej Kavas RSo
PF: Scott Uleano SO
C: Aaron Menzies RJr

Key reserves
Malik Montoya PG/SG JR (could get medical RS for last year though)
Nate Pryor PG FR (3A player of year)
Jake Spurgeon SF SO (hurt all this year)
Mattia Da Campo SG SO

SU is very, very young. Next year we wont have any seniors on the team and just three (maybe 2 with Montoya) juniors

I think the job is Carr's to win or lose in the off season, but I'm not convinced Majerle is enamored with either player. Statistically speaking, they weren't all that different from each other in 2016-17. I might give Shaq the nod because he distributes the ball, but he is also a turnover machine. Shaq is a little better shooter than Fiifi, but doesn't look for his shot as often.

Coach has expressed that he believes Fiifi's ceiling is really high, so we will see what comes from him with maturity. Keep in mind, too, that Majerle likes to have 2 PGs on the floor at the same time. One of them has to start, but they will probably plsy together a lot, too.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see the staff target a PG grad transfer to sure up the back court. I can't see Coach trusting an incoming freshman (Milstead) or project player (Sankare) to fill in if Fiifi or Shaq were to go down. Given the rash of injuries GCU had last season, I have to think it is a consideration.

Maybe it's just me but from what I have seen, Aidoo appears to have more upside than Carr. Aidoo is a stocky guard with decent speed. However, I can understand how Carr's overall experience might win him the starting job. Milstead might ultimately be the point guard of the future for GCU, but I doubt Majerle will hand over the reins to a freshman in the Lopes inaugural NCAA tournament eligible year and Braun's swan song season.

I could also see Majerle signing a JC (or grad transfer) combo guard since GCU seems a little soft at the two guard behind Braun. Next season, the Lopes, "should" be much better in the paint with the return of Jackson and Toure; and the continued development of Vernon and Smith. None of them are overly dominant but the fit GCU's style well. I think a healthy Jackson could have a breakout year.

In my mind, I think Utah Valley is the most dangerous WAC team (as far as Aggie fans are concerned). They are bringing in a lot of D1 transfers to add to a much improving program... BYU transfers Cory Calvert and Jake Toolson, Kent State transfer Jerrelle DeBarry, and Oklahoma transfer Akolda Manyang. Seven-foot Manyang could be a game changer next season. And if UVU gets 4-star recruit 6' 9" Wyatt Lowell back from LDS mission, that will be the cherry on top.

Its because the PAC 12 hasn't had a final four team since 2008 and hasn't won since 1997. I think this is the year. NMSU strength of schedule and close results and loses against bad teams make it hard to evaluate them.

You said that about Ndoye for Bakersfield and I wasn't impressed. However, the game changer would be the Wyatt Lowell kid. P5 schools were going after this kid with a vengeance and his choice was Utah Valley. However, UVU2006 seems to hate Pope so I don't know what to think.

RE: NMSU gets 14 seed, plays Baylor in Tulsa
I think Bakersfield will have a down year. Losing Basil and Arrington is huge. Utah Valley looks loaded but they sure were a weird team this year, beating BYU on the road, losing to Chicago State on the road, beating NMSU on the road, etc., etc. Weird team. GCU I think will have a down year. Replacing Russell is huge but who knows. I thought that about NMSU with the loss of Siakam and we go on to have the most wins in school history in a season. Should be interesting next season. I'm just glad GCU will be eligible for the WAC tourney next year. For sure I'm there in Vegas for that!

This season, Barnes' offense was focused around his guards. For Barnes, 6' 9" 205-lbs Moataz Aly turned out to be a better rim protector, a better rebounder and quicker on defense than Ndoye; the scoring was coming from his guards. With Basile, Airington, Pride, and Smith gone, maybe Barnes will redirect his offense though his interior players like last year when he had Aly Ahmed and Kevin Mays. In which case, 6' 11" 225-lbs Fallou Ndoye could have a bigger role next year.

As for 7-foot 245-lbs Akolda Manyang, I see him impacting the defensive side of the court with his length (wing span) and size as a rim protector. He gives 6' 11" 245-lbs Isaac Neilson a legit backup and makes it more difficult for opposing coaches to game plan against UVU.

This is one of the two matchups I thought Pistol Pete could take (Baylor, Florida St). But Baylor having suffered monster upsets the last 2 years so I have a hard time seeing a 3rd is what has me gunshy. Otherwise I'd pull the trigger.

You are missing Tanveer Bhullar, Jalyn Pennie, and Johnny McCants.

Those three are the question marks. I read that Bhullar and Pennie are graduating in May. They could transfer to another school for more playing time. I think that is what's going to happen since we have to add room for the new recruits.

I just saw that JUCO recruit Corey Davis (6'2 PG) has us in his top four. It looks like Weir is still recruiting.

Davis is averaging 17 PPG, 3.7 APG, while shooting 50% from the field and 46% from 3 point range. He made 91 3's this season. He originally signed with Louisiana Lafayette. He will pick between NMSU, Houston, Western Kentucky, and Colorado.
