Most impressively, the three matchups between the Blue Devils and Tar Heels this season are ESPN’s three most-streamed college basketball games ever.

Is this really a surprise? It's the best rivalry in all of American sports.

Great article from JFann (AllSportsDiscussion.com) comparing ACC attendance in DC last year to Big Ten attendance in DC this year... there IS no comparison!

http://allsportsdiscussion.com/2017/03/1...ington-dc/

The ACC blows away the Big Ten for basketball fans in Washington DC.

Next year we'll see how the Big Ten does in New York (the ACC did very, very well there).

Big Ten didn't come close to filling the place for ANY game.

I'd be interested in comparing attendance for this year's ACC and Big East Tournaments.

Not disputing that. But I would also bet that the vast majority of those TV Households doing that also have ESPN, they just prefer to watch the broadcast on a Raycom station for the reason you cite above.

So, imho, those who have both a Raycom station and ESPN and who choose to do the above are still included in the extrapolated numbers used by Nielsen.

Though I have been known to be wrong before.

Cheers,
Neil

Figures (Duke-North Carolina ACCT) do not include the 109,000 who streamed coverage on WatchESPN, the largest college basketball audience ever on the streaming platform. Nor do they include simulcast coverage on the ACC Network.

WHO'S WHO

As with most of your posts, I don't understand the logic of it. ACC Network/Watch ESPN are streaming applications. No streaming apps are currently part of Nielsen ratings to my knowledge. A fact included in the post I made that started this thread which you should know since your quote about the 109,000 came from the link I provided.

Not sure where you are getting the add-on piece of about simulcast coverage on the ACC network, since I can't find that in any linked article in this thread. But is the inclusion of ACC Network here referring to the Raycom OTA stations or the streaming application part? But even if the former, the Nielsen numbers would only exclude the Raycom OTA stations IF those viewing the broadcast did not have ESPN as well.

Perhaps you can enlighten us further as to what prompted your post but with plain English instead of your e e cummings imitation? And it would be helpful if you included the link to the "Nor do they include simulcast coverage on the ACC Network" quote.

Cheers,
Neil

Clearly the number one rivalry in all of college basketball. And the best two team combo ever in college basketball conference history.

More ratings news from Sports Media Watch

http://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2017/03/...-dame-fsu/

Duke-UNC scored a 1.8 final rating and 3.0 million viewers in Friday’s ACC Tournament semifinals on ESPN, up 114% in viewership from UNC-Notre Dame last year, ratings for which were unavailable (1.4M), and up 38% and 45% respectively from Virginia-UNC in 2015 (1.3, 2.1M). It was the most-watched ACC Tournament game since the 2015 final between UNC and Notre Dame (3.5M).

Entering Saturday’s final, figures for which were delayed due to issues at Nielsen, all ten games of the ACC Tournament posted a double-digit increase in viewership.

Neil

WRONG

But the quote you used to justify this doesn't appear to say that at all.

You included an add-on to the quote that isn't there, at least to the link I provided.

smw: "Figures do not include the 89,000 who streamed coverage on WatchESPN, the third-largest college basketball audience on the platform."

To which your quote has the added phrase: "Nor do they include simulcast coverage on the ACC Network." And your quote has 109,000 not the 89,000 my link has, so...

Please provide a link that has the additional add-on because I can't find it. Thank you in advance.

Cheers,
Neil

PLAIN AS DAY

Okay, it was in the new link I provided today - I was focused on the original link -so thanks.

Still again, my point on this part of the thread had to do with how significant that unaccounted for number would be, not that they were all included.

So, since the projected Nielsen numbers would only be impacted by any Nielsen household that has both ESPN and a Raycom OTA broadcast AND viewed it on the Raycom station instead of ESPN OR simply a Raycom OTA channel but not ESPN - how does that significantly impact the numbers?

In my opinion, which was what I stated earlier, the percentage of those Nielsen viewers would likely be extremely small and thus would not impact the extrapolated numbers used in reporting out the number of viewers significantly.

Cheers,
Neil

Dont know how it affects Nielsen ratings but in the Charlotte market the Raycom telecast generally account for half of the total audience for Duke/UNC. We're talking in the 250-300 range, so that is a significant number of viewers however you look at it & is likely that is the case across the traditional ACC footprint.

While there were a lot of people who actually watched the ACC Tournament on Raycom, that doesn't mean those people would've been lost from the audience without Raycom. I had both Raycom and ESPN - I chose to watch Raycom, but if it hadn't been there I would've watched ESPN. No biggie.

The ACC Network package of Atlantic Coast Conference football games syndicated by Raycom Sports will be available to nearly 80% of the United States this fall, covering over 90 million TV Households. This includes all Top Ten TV markets in the U.S., and 21 of the Top 25. Only ESPN and ESPN2 reach more households, among all sports networks.

Specifically, 90,822,490 U.S. households, representing 78.4% of the U.S., will receive the ACC Network.

said Ken Haines, president & CEO of Raycom Sports: “This broad exposure for ACC football and basketball games provides the ACC with the most over-the-air broadcast coverage of any conference in the nation."
