RE: ACC Championship Locations Going Forward
i don't understand this exposure argument. most the people at the tournament are not even from NYC, it is the fans of the teams. how can one of the best basketball conferences get more exposure than what is provided by television. that makes no sense.
so people in NYC who are ostensibly the world's biggest basketball fans had no knowledge of the ACC until the tournament was played there. lol

Agree on all counts. It is going to be interesting to watch what happens with the Big Ten tournament next year. That was an awfully desperate move.

I'm aware of that. The attendance in Florida for that tournament was embarrassingly awful. That is why it should never be played there again.

ACC tournament tickets are sold to the schools (not public sale at least not in 2007).

And now this: Florida is bigger than New York. Census figures released show Florida passed New York as the nation's third largest state with an estimated population of 19.9 million. New York, now fourth, has 19.7 million. "There are a lot of benchmarks, but this is the biggest one. Dec 23, 2014"

whatever ...
you want to write off the 3rd largest state in the union ...

I think the "average" Louisville fan accepts that the tournament is out of reach no matter where the ACC tournament is held. That being the case, those that can go, and have gone to NYC rave about the experience. Those that went to Greensboro were very disappointed in comparison.
So while a site Greensboro makes the tournament accessible to the "average" fan in NC and VA, it does nothing for our fanbase. Additionally this gives the NC schools home field advantage in some circumstances. So I think most Louisville fans prefer "destination" venues (NYC, MIA, ORL) over Greensboro or Charlotte.

Charlotte is relatively neutral. Greensboro is not.
Washington DC would be a good long term choice, IMO.
New York, DC, Charlotte and Atlanta would be a nice rotation. I wouldn't be against an occasional visit to Cincinnati for the sake of Pitt, Louisville and Notre Dame fans.

You are correct in that the average fan does not have access to tickets until they hit the secondary market.
Generally the tickets are in two price categories. One price for lower arena and another price for upper deck. When I order ticket books, I never know which price I will have to pay. Tickets are distributed on a Rams Club point system and it depends on who orders. The members with the most points get the lower arena and have to pay the higher price. This practice is used for Bowl Game seating as well.
Most tickets that are resold never leave the building. Almost everybody at the tournament has a wad of cash in their pockets used to buy up the ticket books from losing schools fans.

More specifically by average fan I'm referring to "Johnny two kids and a nine to five".A Louisville fan can't catch the game and show up at work tomorrow. A fan in NC could do that. The tournament is much more accessible to the average NC fan than other schools regardless of how the ticket is acquired.

I agree with you about DC. I would like to see DC as the primary site with NY, Charlotte & maybe Atlanta or some other random sites thrown in.

With a population of 22,000 there have been 8 first round NBA draft picks since 1977. It started with Cedric Maxwell and the last one was Brandon Ingram. Others include Jerry Stackhouse, Reggie Bullock, Charles Shackleford.
NYC prep hoops has undoubtedly fallen off quite a bit in the last 10-20 years. It used to churn out top players at a rate way higher than the national average average. Players from other cities used to go to NY to test themselves. Now...and I actually saw this stat somewhere some time ago, it has fallen back to the national average. But that means there are still a ton of good players in the New York metro area because it is so large and hoops is still the primary prep sport in the boroughs. Some of the talent has fled out surrounding regions, such as, for example, ball has gotten stronger across the river in NJ.
Unlike the South where there is really no competition for the ACC hoops brand, there is fierce competition in the Northeast. The whole reason the ACC added teams was to expand into this new lucrative region. It is business, and there is more money in NYC than anywhere else because it is bigger than anywhere else and the financial capital of the continent. That's why any conference with a school near its footprint is trying to plant flags in it, trying to push media deal into it, which also means trying to increase awareness and interest in their brand there. Opening up the possibility of potential new recruiting connections for some programs is just a side benefit. No one has ever argued to play the tournament in NYC only for recruiting purposes. But because NYC recruiting isn't as strong as it was in the 1980s doesn't disqualify the utility of pushing your brand there for all cumulative reasons, nor does it eliminate the value of recruiting in the nation's largest metro area.
But I've said all this multiple times now. Obviously the conference leadership already thinks this way, so there really is no reason to repeat it further.
NYC has been displaced by Kinston NC!!!!!! The number of NBA caliber basketball players coming out of Kinston per capita is so far above the national average it is mind boggling. Cultural activities per capita are also higher. You can have a meal at Vivian Howard's Chef and the Farmer or her Oyster Bar. Then you can go over to the highly regarded Mother Earth Brewery.

The ACC tournament is not about or for the average fan and never has been.

Although I know it is the closest city to Louisville, I can tell you that near 0% of Pitt fan base would be interested in moving the conference tournament to Cincinnati.

i think Greenville or Columbia would be preferable to Greensboro because the arenas are closer to the downtown restaurant/ bar area than in G'boro.

It's all moot until NC repeals HB 2. While we wait for that to happen, if it ever does, Greensboro desperately needs to redevelop High Point Road, where the Coliseum is located, into an attractive, vibrant restaurant, bar and entertainment district. High Point Road is killing the Greensboro Coliseum today. Surely the city fathers can see that.

i think the attendance at tournaments in Gboro is going to be pretty low if it does go back due to GOP voters not liking being called bigots for opposing men be allowed in female restrooms and lockerrooms.

They can renovate til the cows come home, and it still won't be NYC, Washington DC, Atlanta or Orlando.
