This thread just "proves" we are a football school. If we aren't going to consider the CBI or CIT because of money, we are a football school. So get used to the basketball season ending in mid-march. We play in CUSA because of football. CUSA is a one-bid basketball league unless you are virtually perfect every year (and that's not realistic) and half the NIT bids go to 1st place conference tournament losers.

We're not a "football school" yet, but if basketball keeps its status quo, we will be soon.

There is a time and a place for these CHIT Tournaments. This year isn't one of them.

Much rather use the money to pay assistant coaches in Football a slightly better salary. Basketball has not demonstrated that they can compete nor grow to become a program that plays in recognized post season opportunities ( NCAA, NIT). Sorry but produce or further investments stop. Basketball has gotten plenty over the last few years.

C tournaments are for young inexperienced teams that over achieved as a reward for exceeding expectations and prepare them for real post season play next year. We went to Spain for those reasons and it was a bust. The team didn't meet expectations and should stay home. There are years I would support the C tourneys. I even went to the CIT championship game. This year is not the year to invest in one though.

I agree that they shouldn't be rewarded, but you are deflecting the fact that money is cited as the issue. That is concerning at best. If we don't have 30 thousand dollars someone needs to audit the books. I don't donate much but if I did, I'd be at Wood's office with a pitchfork demanding to know what happened to the money.

The amazing thing is that our reward for a good football season is the same as our reward for a poor basketball season... Postseason game against crappy mid major nobody watches.

The Bahamas Bowl drew 1.37 million households. ODU's NIT semifinal game against Stanford drew 827,000. So ODU most likely hasn't hit the 1M household mark for basketball since the NCAAs. And the third-tier tournament games are too low to be rated. So it's not the same thing at all.

The team should play just to get the young guys better for next year. With that said, I can not bear to watch it.

RE: Who's going to the V8GAS 16 with me??
The other thing is that there's a general backlash against the C tournaments. The CIT and Vegas had eight teams fewer than scheduled last season, and this season of course Vegas is dead. The CBI had multiple major programs in the first few years; now, outside of the occasional sub-.500 power conference team, it's nothing but lows and mids. Whether it's perception or money or both or neither, it's getting harder and harder to gin up a decent field for these things.

I see the value in playing them, but I don't think turning them down casts doubt about ODU's commitment to the sport either.

A third tier bowl game and a 3rd tier tournament. Same thing to me. Viewers aren't really relevant. The football game also came at a much greater expense. Frankly, I agree with the decision to play in a bowl game and I agree we should not play in the CIT/CBI. My real point is that if money is the issue, that is just sad. If true, perhaps someone else should be managing it.

You made the point that nobody watches either. The facts show that's clearly not the case with the bowl.

Has anyone come out and said the price of admission is the barrier to accepting an invitation? Because as mentioned (and certainly factoring in last season's no-shows), programs with a lot more walking-around money are saying no to the third-tier tourneys.

If ODU sees value in having its basketball team play in the CBI or CIT, then fine. If they don't think it's worth it, for any reason, then that's fine too. Just because you can spend money doesn't mean it's a bad look if you don't.

Didn't we make money from participating in the Bahamas Bowl?

Yes, but my expectations for a startup, G5 program with no history are different than those for our decades old D1 program with a great history and wins against top
tier teams. If we were Longwood I'd be happy with the CBI, but we are ODU and my expectations for basketball are much higher.

Thanks! Now doesn't that destroy the fundamental argument about Vegas/CBT/CIT vs FBS bowl games that some on here are trying to make.

Popeyes Bahamas Bowl ODU gets cash
CHIT/VEGAS Tourneys ODU pays cash

I agree. I am happy with the football program and I enjoy the games. Just would rather be competing for a championship. I don't expect that ever to happen.

You missed my argument. I just think with the revenue our AD gets, we shouldn't even worried to be worried about the cost of a basketball or football game. I think the department is poorly managed.

JJ told Ed Miller it was NCAA, NIT or bust from the start of the season.

Maybe the euro trip evaporated the budget but I think they just don't see the value in them this year. I believe if they thought it would help us next year, we would be playing in one.
