^^^ I disagree ^^^

Alger and his team should be giving US all of the credit for being so willing to generously give and mobilize so quickly when called upon, which we as an alumni base has done time and time again.

It's not as though a "Giving Day" for a University is a revolutionary idea. This should have been put in place years ago. Sure, I'm glad they realized the opportunity they had in front of them to raise funds, I just wish they would take advantage of the many more opportunities they have in front of them.

The results of the "Giving Day" just go to prove what we already know, many of us love our University and are willing to put our money wear our mouths are. Just wish the relationship was a bit more reciprocal.

Go Dukes!

The DC received $224k. Nowhere close to equaling 22 football scholarships and an additional 22 women's scholarships to remain title ix complaint (while that series of regulations still exist of course).

Easy there -merely a commentary on the amount, and to a lesser degree the willingness of our alums to step up if properly challenged. I'm aware that the money is widely distributed in this particular drive.

As far as the additional Title IX scholarships, I believe that was addressed in the Carr Report: From an Augusta Free Press article
http://augustafreepress.com/jmu-athletic...rt-go-fbs/

A report produced in 2013 by CarrSports indicates that JMU would not need to add women’s scholarships under Title IX if it were to make the move to FBS in football, so we can adjust the numbers in the above analysis to reflect just the costs of 22 additional scholarships for football. Assuming a $30,000-per-head cost for those scholarships for the sake of argument, you’re looking at $660,000 a year in additional expense related to the increased roster for football.

Ode to Jon Alger
Thanks for engaging JMU alum of all ages, races, preferences and religions. Although our lives are fluid, JMU's 24/7 monitoring of all situations has united the increasingly diverse JMU nation. Many of us have dreamed big and are in a good position to enthusiastically give money because it matters and we are happy to do so based on the ongoing dialogue.

seems about right...and he is smart enough to give away the credit for this to the team and alumni - he's got that part right about leadership...hope he is basking in it today and that he got some action last night

My deep deep love for my University and the Purple and Gold will not let me rest Potomac.

You may be able to turn a blind eye to the inept leadership at the helm of James Madison but I cannot and I will not apologize for that.

I believe he was just pointing out the fact that it's okay to question something as long as it's your idea or you agree with it.

I'll say it: I'm jealous of that kind of success. 712 Million and the interest on that is some big time scholarship money. That's a hell of a lot of nerd money in under 2 years.

The peer-to-peer giving model has gained a lot of traction at JMU in the last two years; hopefully we can build on that to make our giving days and overall giving stronger.

Doesn't hurt being the second-oldest college, first university, and first law school in the US. Hard to compete with that much history...

I think the inability to compare is more to jmufan2008's point, they have a MUCH longer history, both generally and for alumni philanthropy. Whether we are "national" or not has nothing to do with it, we need more alumni giving back.

I haven't seen the percentage of alums that give back in the last few years. I know it was around 7.7? a few years back. Based on the social media presence of #JMUGivingDay the last two years and the push for enrolled student giving, I have to to think this number has gone up slightly.

As for a dollar value perspective, I'm guessing Alger gets a little boost of taking over as we were crawling out of 2008 recession versus the last few years under Rose.

It takes a strong belief in the leadership and the decisions they are making to get 30% participation. That's incredible.

The percentage has not gone up (at least not significantly, I think it is still between 7-8%), despite the increase in giving - more years = more alumni. Giving Day has been huge and has been successful in raising awareness of the need to give back to JMU, let's hope it continues beyond just giving day!

While a "national" classification may have little to do with it a "national" presence has everything to do with it. The majority of our alumni base doesn't reside within the bubble. Out of site, out of mind.
