And butts in seats are even worse. I went to a few games this year while school was in session where I doubt there were 100 students or 2,000 people total there. How much did the seizure inducing scoreboard cost? Maybe we should have spent that money and bought a coach.

Good post Philly. Jones was what we needed after Blaine's issues led to his dismissal. He brought in stability to the program, but now it's time to move on IMHO. Frankly I think he stayed a bit too long, but this school has a history of being "just ok", look at when Dr. Jarrett was at the helm? Heck, if he was still at the helm, we wouldn't have football. In anycase, I think we need a young, inspired energetic coach to take over.

RE: The official Jeff jones hot seat thread
I will add my $.02 as I have tried to stay away from these boards most of the year because even in wins, i was not happy with our program. There was no point of piling on after a loss to raining on the parade after a win. But I can now speak from a season perspective.

I HATED the JJ hire at the time. I was not as impressed with the first season tunr around as most. I thought the NIT run was decent, but that was a highly disappointing season. And I thought that we WASTED the single best scorer (pure scorer, not overall player) that the program has even seen (Trey). On top of that, I felt like we have done nothing to build our program. We have tried to plug pieces in to fill holes as opposed to building for the long term. Picking up/relying on transfers is a program killer. You have quick, short term success, but nothing longstanding by doing this.

Maybe the most damming part of this is what my wife thinks. She is NOT an ODU alum. She likes sports in general but not a fanatic like most of us. She LOVED going to ODU basketball games during the Gerald and Baze days and even got into NIT run. We have season tickets and I tend to watch most games on tv and she would watch with me. She has had no desire to go watch this team. The brand of basketball is boring and lacks energy. You don't have to be a college scout to see that we have some talent but that we are aren't an overly talented team.

ODU Basketball will always be my love. Football is fun, but basketball is where my memories are all from. I will continue to donate, but damn I feel dirty doing so. JJ seems like a nice human, but he is what we all knew he was as a coach. A boring middle aged stiff who can't recruit run and gunners in an age of run and gun basketball.

Question for the fans who cannot stomach JJ ball, will you be rooting for ODUs failure next season? If they lose, he's (probably) gone. But if he gets to the tourney, he ain't going anywhere for a while.

Come on....that's pretty major hyperbole....There was no game this season where we got anywhere close to only having 2,000 in the house. Maybe 4,000. (source - went to all but like 2 games). Now the student part.....

I'll take either one. I don't care about style. Just win.

Unfortunately, I doubt that he's gone if he loses.

If he wins, that's what we are after.

I want to be excited about Selection Sunday again.

None of us root for failure by ODU. We just expect the failures to come and have our expectations fulfilled.

There are absolutely fans that would rather lose to prove their point than win and be wrong. That part is certainly obvious.

I'll say this. I always want ODU to win, but in retrospect, losing to UTSA might not be a bad thing. That kept us from hitting 20 wins, which is pretty much the line between good teams and not-so-good. Having 19 wins will hopefully cause the team and coaches to look at themselves and re-evaluate what they are doing and how to achieve success.

We will play in some crap tournament, win a few games, and then tell everyone we had another wonderful 23 win season.

This. Next year's team will be extremely talented, but I have come to expect that JJ will put them through asylum-style mental hell and I predict both Caver and Talley, if they don't get suspended, will regress or continue to show flashes of what they are capable of with confidence without ever being built up to consistently having confidence.

But of course I hope I am wrong and JJ learns to be good at building them up and not just tearing them down.

I don't think so. They won't pay their assistant football coaches a little more, I can't see them forking over $100,000 for this underachieving team. Not many fans would show up or even care. Please, save the money and pay the asst football coaches instead.

+1. I could have written this post, especially the part about my non-alum wife losing interest. She is a sports junkie and used to LOVE watching ODU with me. Now she would rather do almost anything else.

It was interesting to go back and see the names of coaches that us posters wanted at the time...

Brett Reed....hasn't been to the tourney; worse than JJ
Tim Fuller...out of basketball?
Keatts.....would have been awesome.
Steve Prohm...shot down by a few posters (because of lack of success at Murray State), but obviously would have been an awesome get.
Mike Rhodes....hasn't been to tourney; worse than JJ
John Gianninni....has been terrible since this time (sweet 16 previous year); worse than JJ
Andy Enfield....slam dunk hire.

A lot of other names mentioned by kind of thrown out. Looks like a lot of the guys we wanted would have been mediocre hires.

I was in the "give JJ a chance" group. Well, he's had his chance, and should get one more next year. After that, if we aren't dancing, it's time to move on.

What are we building on? The fact the Ted is great and we earn an NCAA invite every five years? We are no better today than when we were a 'commuter school' back in the 70's (when I was a student there). Hell, I believe our best team was the Valentine/West/McAdoo team some 40 years ago when we played at Scope. Tell me why, in four decades, not once have we recruited a player who truly got the fan base excited? It pains me to say this, but regardless of Jones, Taylor, Capel, Purnell, Young, or anyone else, maybe we need a reality check? We didn't dominate the Sun Belt. Didn't dominate the CAA. And we should as hell aren't dominating CUSA. Yet, we talk as if we had. That said, I agree with you. We need a coach who gets this program moving in the right direction, otherwise there is a fine line between relevancy and irrelevancy.

In defense of Rhoades, he was starting further back at Rice, which hasn't been to the NCAAs since the War of 1812, I think. I suspect he would have been fine here.
