Wright State has been hemorrhaging 20% of it's 2013 endowment each of the past three years between enrollment decline and extreme corruption by the Board of Trustees, and has made so many cuts that about the only thing left to cut is athletics. I really think that they're the next Chicago State waiting to happen.

Not sure one good season in the conference validates the invite as a good move. Jury is still out. 07-coffee3

Naw, already been adjudicated. NKU was a D2 power, so they knew what it took to win and NKU did the D1 transition the correct way. They hired a good AD for the move, who in turn hired a good coach. Although Coach Brannen and the Norse won only 9 games last season, you could see the coaching style and culture the coach created. It was just a matter of him getting his type of player for his system. He went out and signed multiple 3-star players and has a couple 3-stars for the upcoming season. That bodes well for sustainability (unless high-majors come sniffing around).

I think the infrastructure might indicate there is some investment in the overall programming.

Yeah, some programs do a little or enough to warrant consideration, get to somewhere they'd rather be, and then take up space. NKU seemed to lock onto Horizon and did what it must to get there. It's a public school in a good basketball region...it definitely fits with the conference. I think it's more...is the Horizon all that much to talk about anymore?

There are a couple of programs out there I'm watching as potential climbers. NKU and FGCU stick out in the east. I wonder if UC-Davis outgrows Big West.

I'm not sure where NKU and FGCU could go without football. The Atlantic 10 doesn't need to get any bigger. I also couldn't see the Atlantic 10 dipping down into Florida unless if someone else in that part of the country (i.e. Jacksonville, Mercer, Winthrop) starts performing on a similar basis.

UC-Davis has no other options. The only other options in the West are the WCC, MWC, or PAC. WCC is all private schools, while MWC and PAC both require football.

The current NCAA tournament environment is extremely antagonistic towards mid-majors, but the Horizon definitely has the potential to be a mutli-bid league next year.

Oakland, NKU and UIC will be considerably better. Valpo and Green Bay won't fall off that much. Even a good chunk of the bottom of the conference won't be big-time RPI killers, Detroit & Youngstown should be considerably better too. Milwaukee can build off their late season run to the Championship game, 2nd year with a new coach. Only Wright State and Cleveland State am I down on - Wright has considerable structural head-winds, and CSU needs to re-build with a new coach.

It's only true option would be to upgrade to FBS football and try, one day, for a MWC invite. Just don't know if that's in the cards, given both UC and California bureaucracies potentially holding it down at the behest of the schools already at the top.

"But the Horizon definitely has the potential to be a multi-bid league next year."--I'll take that bet. 1 bid league next year. The odds are that it will be a 1 bid league every year for the next several decades.
Cheers!

Actually, the upcoming season will be the best shot in a long while for the HL to be a multi-bid league. Northern Kentucky only loses Cole Murray; UIC brings back EVERYBODY plus HL Freshman of the Year Dikembe Dixson; Valpo has a couple of D1 transfers plus the improvement of big men Smits and Sorolla. Oakland in all likelihood will be the Horizon League preseason favorite with a chance to Dance. Getting the league to become a multi-bid will depend on two things this upcoming season: Health and improvement of each team and the OOC schedule. Each team obviously needs to improve the schedule and the winning percentage of those games. Oakland has already upgraded for '17-'18. And don't sleep on Wright State.

As a matter of fact, I just might take you up on that bet!!!

I'll take the bet. I say The Horizon won't be a multi bid league next year. It'll be a 1 bid conference. What are the terms? How about: Logos in our profile for the loser? You have ECU as a logo from the 2018 NCAA tournament selection show until the start of 2018 football if wrong, I'll list your Horizon league school as my team in my logo for the same period of time?

You got it! My caveat was going to be waiting until the transfers and graduate free agents are done with, but I'm good.

BTW, I'm not trashing the Horizon. I'm just looking at the new realities. The MWC and MVC conferences were 1 bid conferences. The AAC was a 2 bid league. Unless and until the committee stops squeezing us out, I don't see the Horizon getting multiple bids to the dance.

I agree. And I didn't think you were trashing the Horizon.

Not necessarily, but they somehow managed to hide that the university as a whole had $40+ million dollar deficits the last three years until sometime last fall. Only a tiny part of that is athletics, but it seems like they have been cutting so many different things that it's hard to see what else they will cut.
