Women's MAC tournament
The women play Toledo tonight in the last of the four quarterfinal games. Game should start between 7:30 and 8. (It depends on the length of the earlier games.)

The two teams are the hottest in the MAC. Toledo has won five in a row, including road victories against the No. 2 seed Ball State and No. 4 seed Northern Illinois. For the season, the Rockets are 22-8.

Kent State has won seven in a row and won the MAC East outright for its first division title in 12 years. Kent State is 19-11 and has won more games than the last three years combined.

The Flashes beat Toledo 70-60 in Kent Jan. 24. Since then, Kent is 9-2, Toledo 10-2. Toledo has back starting guard Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott, who missed the first Kent game with a concussion. Toledo is a deep, athletic team that starts four guards. Three of them were all-conference (one second team and two third team). The fourth was on the all-freshman team.

Since the first Toledo game, Kent State has gotten a great deal more scoring from players other than Larissa Lurken and Jordan Korinek, who were both named to all-MAC teams Tuesday. (Lurken was conference player of the year.) Since Jan. 24, McKenna Stephens has scored in double figures in seven of 11 games. Megan Carter has scored 10 or more four times. In the last four games, Alexa Golden is 7 of 13 in three-point shooting.

In the first game, no Kent player besides Lurken and Korinek scored more than 5 points.

To me, the key to the game is Kent State's defense. When the Flashes held MAC opponents under 70 points, they were 11-0.

RE: Women's MAC tournament
Western defense in last minute was unbelievable -- three turnovers against one of best point guards in the conference.

Some nice stuff online on Kent State today:

Video on the team, with season highlights and interviews with players and coaches, is on the KSU Facebook Live page at https://www.facebook.com/GoldenFlashes/v...63508922/.

Cleveland.com (the Plain Dealer) focused on coach Todd Starkey and his work to turn the program around at http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/...te_1.html.

The Record-Courier’s preview has nice interviews with Starkey, Lurken and Athletic Director Joel Nielsen. It’s behind a paywall. You have to pay $2 for short-term access to the site. http://recordpub.com/sports/2017/03/08/t...ooking-up.

See you after the game.

Ohio blew a 22 point lead and lost to NIU 72-71. What a shame for Ohio.

Toledo 39, Kent 35 at the half. Lurken has 16. She ihas driven a lot but Toledo isn't fouling her that often so she has ended up taking some bad off balance shots. Overall it's a pretty even game . Starky actually started playing offense/ defense with two players in the 2nd quarter. First time I've seen that.

Lost 67-63. We had an 8 point lead and Toledo just shut us down in the 4th quarter. I don't have a box score in front of me but Lurkens shooting percentage had to be poor. Very few foul shots too. Toledo did a good job of not fouling on her drives. It still was a very good season and let's hope it's not entirely over. Of the four teams with byes only NIU won and it was by only one point.

RE: Women's MAC tournament
A really tough loss.

Kent State never got to the foul line in the fourth quarter. I don't think that happened in the entire conference season. KSU probably won 12 games this season because she made more foul shots than its opponents. They made one more (16 of 19 to Toledo's 15 of 19) Wednesday.

The Flashes scored only 7 points in the fourth quarter, four in the last eight minutes. A lot of it was very good Toledo defense, including two breakawayt steals.

Story is going up on the blog at http://wbbFlashes.co. About half of it is already posted

Starkey said, by the way, the the team is hoping for a WNIT bid and thinks it has a good chance. About six MAC teams made the WNIT last season, and the league is better this year.

I was sitting a row behind the team and not to sound like sour grapes but the officiating crew left a lot to be desired. Jordan and Lurkin were hacked many times shooting under the basket and were held during their cuts to the basket. They were outplayed in the fourth quarter but if just some of the calls were made, the outcome would have been different. Kudos to the team and the success that they had this year.....

RE: Women's MAC tournament
I agree there were some fouls over looked but the same could be said when Toledo had the ball. This crew let them play which most of us like. The problem was we had a team that was used to getting 10+ more free throws. That was their formula for winning. They needed refs that call more fouls and they didn't get them.

I hope the AD decides to pay for a WNIT home game. That would probably clinch a berth for us. With a 93 RPI (probably a bit lower after the loss) and 128 teams making the NCAA and NIT we have a reasonable shot.

RE: Women's MAC tournament
NIU played the whole game like they played the second half in the quarters and easily beat WMU.

Toledo used the same formula on Johana Smith as they did on Lurken and beat Buffalo. Not many fouls called in that game either although it was not as physical as the Kent game.

I'd really like to see CMU vs Toledo but NIU will have to do.

RE: Women's MAC tournament
Toledo, the team that knocked Kent State out of the MAC tournament in the quarterfinals, won the title with an 82-71 victory over Northern Illinois.

KSU lost to the Rockets 68-65 in the first round when it missed (it wasn't close) a three-point shot with a second to go. The Flashes came the closest of the three teams Toledo played.

NCAA bids are announced Monday. The WNIT field is announced within a few hours after that. Kent State has a very good chance of making the WNIT; five MAC teams made it last season. Six MAC teams, including Toledo and Kent State have an RPI under 100, which is sort of a cutoff.

Details on the game and more on postseason possibilities are on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.

There's also a 16 team WBI if all else fails. That means 144 schools go somewhere.
