Im not a Cougar or a Longhorn, but UT's plan was stupid. The funding that UT wanted to control from Austin should be controlled from Houston via UH. Its Houstonians that built the economy here. UT can butt out. They'll put Austin first every time.
If there's a need in Houston, it will be filled. It should be filled with people who are local.
And Houston already has a full list of independent public institutions. We have the Univ. of Houston, the University of Houston-Downtown (a fully separate 4 year institution), the Univ of Houston - Clear Lake (a fully separate 4 year institution), Texas Southern University, Texas A&M Galveston, UTMB-Galveston, UT-Health Science Center, Prairie View A&M and Texas A&M and Sam Houston just on the outskirts of the metro.
The last thing Houston (the city) needs is another out of town controlled institution trying to dilute our hometown institutions.
Tom, we finally agree on something. Seriously, I couldn't have said it better myself.

Either that, or take over Texas Southern University and rename it UT-Houston. (But that would make too much sense.)
And TSU has had so many scandals over the years, it could use new management. That, and the whole idea of an HBCU is a relic of the past, though politics would never allow for some to be shut down.
I was thinking UT-Austin could take over TSU, move the campus to the land they purchased, and sell us the old land so we could expand. Hell, we could use that land to build a medical school, a nursing school, and more dorms.

No offense but that neighborhood is not safe and fair or not it would be an issue for some.

I ain't offended. And yeah, you've got a point. I just think UH could use a little more land to build more dorms and a medical school that we will eventually get. That's all.

McRaven bit off more than he could chew. Did not grasp the politics of it. The regents just followed. "Quantum Leaps" seeems arrogant. How can you execute 8 or 10 of those? If you told me that the goal was one or two quantum leaps, I could believe that.
I don't blame the UH folks one bit for their reaction.

There is nothing wrong with that neighborhood. It's a far sight safer than the UH/TSU area.

I think the better solution is to roll UHD into Texas Southern and reboot it. I think there IS a need for a largely open admissions 4 year public institution in Houston. Houston already has a tier 1 institution, the Univ. of Houston. No need to add another tier 1.

It's not like the land UT bought is in River Oaks.

Well, like Wedge said in #13, if it was going to be a world-class, public medical school & health research campus, like UC San Fran, that would be something.
But ... there is already that giant medical campus across from Rice, which has facilities affiliated with multiple universities IIRC, both private and public.

Certainly much residential development happening in that Bellfort/Buffalo Speedway area. (I am a Rover Oaks customer and drive through often.). Stella Link corridor also keeps upgrading. Eventually the old Astroworld property gets redeveloped, and the light rail is already nearby. That is probably good land, although environmental issues are possible from the past oilfield history.
Biggest issue with UH is the painful traffic to get there from the west. I remember Dr. Gelb saying during my MBA the real test of a Houston business is will a customer go to the effort to park their car. It is not easy to get to UH in evening rush hour if you are coming from the West on 610 or US-59/I-69. That UT land is not as encumbered by traffic.

That's a great idea! Seriously, I wish I had thought of that. The only problem is it takes away a public university, which would mean there would have to be one started up to replace it. (Either that, or have a community college like Lee College in Baytown upgraded to a four-year college or university.) Regardless, rolling UHD into TSU and rebooting it would be a brilliant move.
We should talk sports more often, Tom. We're more often than not on the same page when it comes to the subject, it seems.

Depends what you mean by "reboot".
Do you really think that black politicians are going to let the name and history of an HBCU vanish?
Look what happened when UTenn-Nashville and Tenn State were merged, and "rebooted".

They could probably keep the name Texas Southern University as well as the heritage, prestige, and reputation, but have it open to practically everybody like UHD. I think that would be a fair compromise.

You merge TSU and UH and call it Texas Southern and the only thing different is perhaps the location. I guarantee you it would scare many non-minorities away, whether it was fair or not.

Again, the case study is the merger of UT-Nashville and Tenn State, which simply stayed Tenn St.
Went from clearly HBCU demographics, to today I think it's more like 50/50 with whites.

I think so long as the team still competed in the SWAC, there'd be less contentiousness. I think keeping most of the leadership from TSU would probably help too.
