People that attend live sporting events at colleges are statistically much more likely to donate than those that don't. The MAC is gaining some short-term TV dollars, but it's sacrificing it's long-term health.

Yep. This sucks for the MAC. I remember when ESPN bullied both CUSA and the MWC in the early 2000's with a proposal to put their football games on weekdays and both conferences told ESPN to shove it and found different network partners to play their football games on Saturdays. Imagine Louisville, Houston, Cincinnati Utah, BYU and TCU playing football games on ESPN on Tuesday and Wednesday nights? Me either. College Football is a Saturday sport. NFL Sunday. HS on Friday..
Cheers!

I think the MAC needs to cut a deal with the B1G to put content on their network.

03-banghead 03-banghead 03-banghead

Nothing wrong with being on B1GN.

The reality is the MAC does not do well competing against other ESPN games on Saturdays so looking at other options might be worth it. Playing an early game on BTN might have more viewers than being on ESPN3 for example.
The only problem with that plan is that B1GN has B1G games to broadcast at 12p on Saturday.

I actually watched a few UMass games (flipping to and fro with other games) this past year and they were pretty competitive with bigger name teams like South Carolina and Miss St. I remember they were on the young side and seemed pretty well coached. I'm interested in checking their progress this season.

So you watched them on SECN but not ESPN3. That's the downside to regional networks and ESPN3.

Playing 12 pay games at the SEC on SECN would be more lucrative and gain better exposure than the current TV setup.

It seemed like they were on ASN (?) every week.

Sorry bud, we ain't talking wrasslin. We are talking how may FB games on a saturday are on B1GN. If there are 3-4 FB games every saturday on B1G then I'll eat my crow but I was not aware of any conference networks that offer a full day of football on Saturdays.

I personally think conference networks should consider adding a g-5 game on Saturdays to make a full day of programming. Conference like the PAC might find that a SDSU vs UNLV game might bring one viewers to the network who wouldn't otherwise watch. A full day of football makes the channel more of a destination than 1-2 games does.

And for conferences like the MAC who are being hurt by all the weekday games maybe being on a conference network on Saturday might be better than being on ESPN 3 or some regional channel. I suspect many BiG fans have family ties to a MAC schools so there should be at least mild interest.

I remember when the only time a MAC football team could get good television exposure was to play in a bowl game in Fresno. Even then, sometimes only a regional sports channel would air it.

I don't want to go back to those days. Weeknight #MACtion is worth it.

Compare NIU's fan base to, say, 2003, and this tv deal has decimated attendance, donors, gameday experience and hype. Same story for other MAC programs. MAC is horribly run. All for a measly 6-figure gain per school.

I didn't believe this earlier in the thread but can confirm it is 100% accurate. Attendance used to be around 20k and now it's just a fraction of that.

There are usually at least 3 games on Big 10 network on Saturdays. I mentioned wrestling because that's the reason I paid to have the Big 10 network. There was even an "overflow" big 10 network channel as part of package so if Iowa was playing at the same time as Indiana, both games could still be shown.
Cheers!

75% of the MAC would have lower attendance playing on Saturdays because their fans would be watching the Spartans, Wolverines, and Buckeyes.

That's just not true. Those t-shirt fans don't go to MAC games on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, or even on Saturdays when OSU, UM, or MSU have bye weeks.

I consider myself a loyal Akron fan. I'm by all definitions a booster and I don't even bother messing with weekday night games as rushing there from work to just make kickoff, sit there for 4 hours, drive home late, and wake up early to go to work the next day is a huge hassle. If I'm not willing to deal with the headache of a mid week game, why would someone who treats the team with low priority attend?

Really only 2 games that had any viewers and both were on SECN.

I believe it was 2003 when TCU was in CUSA, we played every single day of the week that year if you include the bowl game. It was unbelievable trying to attend games. All for TV. Now our biggest problem is playing day games in September and October in 97-100 degree heat. I feel for the MAC. They got some really good programs, but they are making it impossible for the fans.

The scheduling is a bear but having 2 MAC programs make a Big time bowl in the last 5 years says alot about the talent level of the league. Mid week games on TV may not be helping recruiting but they sure aren't hurting it either. Those checks that NIU & WMU earned for the conference and each program were nice too.
