I wrote a nice scathing email to the admissions department yesterday when, for the 2nd year in a row, the student that blew me away during my RAVA alumni interviews was not admitted. My top recommendation from 2 years ago ended up making one of Forbes's 30-under-30 lists as an 18-year-old (obviously at a different university).
If you can, find out where he/she is going. If it's a clearly top school, the Admissions folks might have felt/figured out that he/she would get in there and decline Rice, lowering the "yield" (enrolled/accepted ratio). In those cases, some schools have been known to decline such a sure-to-decline applicant to help keep the yield up.
Of the seven I interviewed for regular decision this season -- all fabulous! -- two were accepted, three offered the waiting list and two were declined.
(How many get in each year via the waitlist? Not may, I suspect.)
She was waitlisted. She told me Rice was her top choice, as long as she could afford it. She ended up at a good public school (in another state). She was truly the best interview, by orders of magnitude, in my 15 years of conducting RAVA interviews (easily 60+ interviews). She brought a resume that completely blew me away, and had her GPA so I know her grades weren't an issue. I didn't see her test scores, but I would be beyond shocked if they were anything but exceptional. My RAVA report was beyond glowing, telling Rice they should give her a full scholarship. Rice sometimes employes unconventional stupidity.
I did 7 interviews this year. 1 admitted (he was fine during the interview, but nothing special). 1 waitlisted (she was a little better in the interview). But the best interview this year was not admitted. He blew me away (though not as much as the girl from last year) and I begged Rice to admit him.
apologies for the digression...
Don't apologize --- I think your point is well taken (well, at least what I'D interpret the point to be...).
Rice is a great university that I love, but it has always suffered by having a large portion of the student body that is NOT what we, on this board, would consider to be well-rounded. And this most definitely DOES impact our frustrations / struggles to maintain a Division 1 athletics program.
And, this thread would serve to confirm that we wouldn't have to sacrifice academic excellence in order to achieve a better-rounded student body.

Yes for my 2 cents worth (and of course that's all it's worth), I would love to see Rice GROW enrollment. This might have a few benefits for sports but mostly could promote a more well-rounded student body overall, if executed well in outreach and admissions.

Yes but only if they come from Texas and the surrounding states. It's this kind of situation that had me give up on doing interviews quite a while ago. Clearly, what I thought would be a good Rice student didn't match up to what the admissions department ultimately decided. So if my input wasn't being valued, I wasn't going to put the time into helping out.

It might sound paradoxical, but my unscientific observations find that the Rice students from out of state (but not international) care more about sports than the in-state students.

Great...
Not shocking. He didn't pan out at QB or WR despite his athletic skills.

Can I transfer my alumni status? "admissions" offices are no longer about admissions as they don't care about that, they only care about applications so the yield looks good. Excellent candidates no longer matter as it is all about the blend de jour. My very qualified son who would have been 4th generation rice alum, ended up at a well known private university in San Antonio , named top senior computer science senior there , and will be employed in Silicon Valley at 5x my starting salary. Hope the student admitted instead of him did as well. As Donald would say it is a disaster

Statistically, that sounds about right.

Athlon Sports ranking the presumptive FBS QBs.
Well, the odds are that our QB will have outperformed his ranking when we look back on the season next December.
Hate to think he could underperform.
Jackson Tyner is shown as presumed starter ranked #126 out of 130, next to last in CUSA and last in Texas schools. Even Texas State's Damian Williams is in double digits at #94. CUSA has 4 presumed starters in the bottom 10% (USM, ODU, Rice & UAB), but it also has 2 in the top 14% - MTSU's Brent Stockstill at #17 and WKU's Mike White at #18.

You blame him? You have the same loosers running the offense. (03-29-2017 12:06 PM)SaintsOwl Wrote: (03-28-2017 03:49 PM)westsidewolf1989 Wrote: (03-28-2017 03:44 PM)Pan95 Wrote: Nate German is transferring.

RE: 2017 Rice spring football
Watched the Chuck Pool Rice Football Spring Game primer on Facebook ( https://www.facebook.com/RiceAthletics/?...TIMELINE).
Some interesting tidbits.
Defense
Defensive line described as the deepest group.
Brief plaudits for Emmanuel Ellerbee and DJ Green.
Corner back Jorian Clark seems to be moving towards significant playing time.
Offense
Leaning on the the Offensive line going into fall. The defacto strength of the offense.
Lynch does not hold to a QB race being decided in Spring. Fall will decide which could mean that Miklo Smalls could factor.
It seems that Trevor Long will transition to TE (6-5/240) when he is healthy.
Aaron Cephus, Jordan Myers, and Kylen Granson look to be young players to keep an eye on in the receiving department. Cephus seems to possess great body control and could be a redzone threat. Myers is a versatile threat.
