Couple of roster observations: Bearfield moved from safety to linebacker, and Collin Parker moved from db to safety.
Going back and looking at highlights from JMU and Richmond the past two years, so much dependent on team chemistry and confidence. Talent is there on both sides. We are an incredibly young team on the defensive side, by W&M standards, which bodes well for how good this defense can be in the next couple of years. I would expect our QB play will improve dramatically by conference play, under either Mitchell or Battle. Anticipate we'll see Nate Evans right out of the gate because of his versatility, and solid experience gained for Britt and Giles. If Funderburke is back full strength by conference play, and we see offensive consistency, that in my opinion was never there under Rogers, then I'm drinking the kool aid. Must win that first game against Stony Brook, who has a tendency to start well early season, then fade, but Jimmye and two weeks to prepare is money. Elon, enough said, but then that game at Delaware looms huge for this team's confidence and what kind of season this may be. Delaware will have already played JMU at home, with an emotional home game against Richmond to follow our game, so, we're in a good set up position. Gain a 3-0 start heading into homecoming with JMU, and I wouldn't bet against us.
Go Tribe!

From everything I've seen Bearfield may be starting at LB

I would guess this is in the type of role that Harvey filled as a "LB".

With so much spread, lots going with "Hybrid" LB/DB, and especially with certain packages. Defense still very young, I think after a year under their belts, they will come out stronger and faster. Look at all the guys who played last year as TF or RF. Three more years to develop. The Uva win video showed Lissamore, Tracy & Caldwell as savvy seniors, I remember those guys when they were younger players. As seniors they were offense killers.

I choose to believe that the surviving 3 QBs in the War Of The Five Quarterbacks have been so incredible that JL just can't bring himself to pick a winner.

Or maybe Jimmye is just sandbagging. Making UVA think he doesn't know who the QB is but really he knew all along.

Or, or one just hasn't seperated from the pack. I believe if the staff could make the decision they would. This board and the fan base needs to be patient and support this team through the growing pains this year.
The QB of choice on this board might have to wait a year. My opinion. It's a huge jump. Yes he's very talented, but I think it would be best to go with one of the two older guys. Let the kid mature and give him four amazing years to entertain the Tribe fan base.

Or, maybe, just maybe the reporter is working off of news from a week or two ago and is just making an interesting piece that is dated.

Once you put in one of the other guys over Mitchell then it makes it hard to take them out unless they grossly underperform. If they play decently then they would expect to stay in over a guy who is behind them on the depth chart. If it is Battle then he could be starting for 3 years; if McKee, then for two.
In other words, whoever wins the battle could/should expect to start for several years (unless, again, they under-perform). However, I don't think Mitchell left high school early to enroll in college just so he would redshirt his first year. I think the other guys have to prove that they are significantly better than Mitchell in order to beat him out.

From limited coverage, here is my take.
McKee knows the system well, but his arm strength is question mark at least that is what I saw from spring game.
Battle has strong arm, but I don't know much about other aspects of his game since he never took a snap.
Mitchell seems to have pocket demeanor and confidence that he can play right away. I think Jimmye would like to redshirt him, but I don't know how Mitchell will take it.

So that's where I am. If Battle (or whoever) wins the job they should be entitled to keep it.

Umm, sign me up. The game was played in Australia and both teams were hugely compensated. I couldn't find the numbers for this game, but the previous teams that played in the Sydney game brought in close to 7 figures.
I get that your point was the score, but the benefits these payouts would bring the program are emense... Much more than a final score.

I think a lot of folks here are hoping Mitchell turns out as the next David Corley. There were a couple of guys ahead of Corley when he was a freshman, but injuries and ineffectiveness got us the youngest starting QB we've had. Worked out pretty well then, but all we have right now is hope that Mitchell is the same quality of player as Corley.

If the coaches deem any player not ready, regardless of position and another player wins the job, that never means it's their job forever.
I believe the kid has all of the skills needed to be a great player for us, but if he is not ready this year it does not mean he won't be next year.
If you are a player on this team, you know that each year players are recruited to take your job. You have to earn every year. No job, once won is guaranteed.
The coaches see each in practice. There are more than one set of eyes on the players. They know, based on their experience who should QB this team out of the gate in 2017.
It probably isn't going to be the guy many on this board were hoping for. My opinion only. I could be wrong.

Absolutely not!
I hope Mitchell turns out as the next Yagiello / Knight. They both were a cut above Corley.

Stanford is a good program right now, and Rice is horrible. We could beat Rice. Though Rice's band is amazing and a lot of fun to watch.

Easily possible that who starts the season at QB is not the settled on starter come conference play. Won't necessarily know who has "it" until intangibles seen in game. Hopefully, we will begin to see QB play return to past glory, whomever it is when the dust settles. At least we may be set for the next four years at QB, and possibly five. Would think this program will be in great position to return to the top of the CAA next year, unless this year discovers a glass slipper.
