Does that look like a modern NBA (or NHL) arena, to anyone??

To convert that into one, would probably cost the same as building one from scratch.

It's 50 years old. No one is talking about bringing pro sports there. It's owned by Madison Square Garden and is now, I guess, pretty well set up for music. So the challenge here will be luring artists that could otherwise play in a new (maybe larger) arena built by/for the Clippers, or a new smaller venue in Kroenke-ville. I think The Forum could be in trouble, but it remains to be seen what MSG will do to lobby the city and/or raise public opposition.

Maybe Kroenke should just buy the Forum, rather than build the 6k venue.

They have a real problem with tearing sports venues down in this country. But amazingly Wrigley and Fenway are still standing. I know there's little free land in Boston but still, that place has to be on the verge of being condemned. If not, that's some amazing engineering.

I don't know why the Clippers just didn't move to Anaheim when the Ducks arena opened up in the nineties, by this point they would've had the OC locked up.

They did play there part time but I guess they didn't want to give up the LA identity. It's all about branding. It's why UNCC goes by Charlotte and why the Giants and Jets call themselves New York even though they play in New Jersey.

If the clippers want to identity as a winner how about golden state clippers ? Ha I mean isn't golden state going to become San Francisco warriors soon. I suppose California clippers could work if they moved to OC.

But what kind of branding can you accomplish when you're the Lakers b**** on the court and play in the same arena? Up until a few years ago when the team's fortunes turned around a bit, there was almost no reason to be a Clippers fan aside from just liking the underdog or hating the color purple. Even if the Jets are less popular than the Giants in New York and play in the same stadium, they were able to carve out a bit of a working class identity by playing in Queens for a while.

If the Anaheim arena was going to get built for the Ducks anyway, they could've just moved there and then they could consider building their own LA arena near today with their lease expiration approaching. At least then they'd be the team of the OC to an extent and maintain a bit of their fan base after the move.

Why, so they can be like the California Clippers? There's a reason the Angels call themselves LA and it's because of branding.

That may be the more reasonable solution. It would allow MSG to get out with their head above water, and then the Clippers arena could be built on the Rams site.

If LA winds up with the 2024 or 2028 Olympics, then the new arena could wind up hosting something like volleyball or team handball. The new Rams stadium probably gets basketball or gymnastics simply because of the popularity of those events.

The Sox have spent over $350M the last 10 years renovating Fenway. Sure the seats are small and not a lot of leg room, but otherwise the park is in great shape.

Rams stadium or arena?

Rams Stadium. The Georgia Dome hosted basketball and gymnastics in 1996, so those events will fill a NFL Stadium during the Olympics.

I highly doubt they will play basketball in the new stadium, especially with no shortage of basketball arenas to play basketball in. If Ballmer's arena is built in time, that'll mean there will be 3 NBA caliber arenas close by not to mention a few college ones. They'll play soccer or some other sport in Kroenkeville.

What will they do for track -- the marquee event in terms of stadium construction.

Wonder if there would be somehow a feasible way to renovate the Coliseum to host track, in such a way that it can then be easily torn down and converted into a full-time football stadium for USC?

From what I understand, the Coliseum is the Olympic stadium. Imagine it hosting 3 Olympics within 100 years.

The track was removed from the Coliseum about 25 years ago, but the plan for the Olympic bid describes what you are imagining. Pretty cool if they can pull it off...

USC is planning $270MM in renovations for its own needs, and the LA Bid Committee wants to add another $300MM for the Olympics. So it's certainly the plan that the stadium would return as a highly renovated football-only stadium for USC's exclusive use (they have a master lease and control operations of the facility). I have my doubts about how user friendly they can make that stadium. Among other things, it doesn't have particularly good sight lines and the access tunnels are narrow and long - they're terrible choke points. Bottom line though: There is zero chance another stadium will be built, and there is no existing stadium big enough and near enough to host track and opening/closing ceremonies. It's the Coliseum or bust, and the IOC already likes the facility. Renovating to meet current standards ought to be good enough.

Those aren't insignificant problems. It's still not ADA compliant and what passes for concourses are still too tight

Of all the potential renderings I've seen to renovate the Coliseum, USC's plan is the absolute worst

So sad, just tear down the Forum and build new. Or stay at Staples Center.
