WAC Conference Honors-Men's Basketball
Up to this point here are my WAC honors for men's basketball.

COY-Paul Weir-NMSU

POY-Dwayne Russell-GCU

WAC 1st Team:
Dwayne Russell-GCU
Ian Baker-NMSU
Trayon Palmer-Chicago State
Jaylen Airington-CSUB
Eli Chuha-NMSU

WAC 2nd Team:
Lavell Boyd-UMKC
Antonio Green-UTRGV
Matt Smith-CSUB
Kyle Steward-UMKC
Isacc Neilson-Utah Valley

WAC New Comer of the Year: Jemerrio Jones-NMSU

Just so the GCU posters know the WAC POY was not as clear cut as I thought when you look closer at the stats. Only Baker and Russell won WAC Player of the week 3 times each and Bakers Field Goal Percentage and Free throw percentage is better than Russell. Also, points per game and assist per game are very very close. Sorry but I know you GCU fans think Braun deserves something and he does, for his hustle and determination to come back. However, his play has not been worthy enough IMO to merit any awards this year. I know you'll say that it looks homer my selections but look at stats, awards and individual performance. It's possible Barnes may win COY if they win out but to not give it to Weir at 26-4 if NMSU wins out would be wrong. Chuha wins for the center position cause he is decent and their are not very many good centers in the league this year.

RE: WAC Conference Honors-Men's Basketball
I think it's going to be tough to leave Nick Dixon or Fred Simms Jr off of honors lists, given the seasons each of them are having. In a guard heavy league like the WAC, I guess something will have to give. Either voters put 3-4 guards on each team, or some really deserving players will end up being left out.

I'm with you, in that there isn't a lot of strong front court play in the league. Guys like Chuha, Palmer, J. Jones, & maybe Smith deserve some recognition, but that's about it.

Deserving players are always left off but you can't put two players on team from the teams with the worst record in the conference.

I understand your point about them being on last place teams, but Dixon & Sims are also 2 of the top 3 scorers in the WAC. Dixon is actually averaging more points per game in conference play than Russell.

If you and I were voters, maybe we could say with certainty that they "can't" be awarded. However, this is the coaches and media we are talking about. I can't say anything is for certain when it comes to predicting what they'll do.

RE: WAC Conference Honors-Men's Basketball
Unless those guys were NBA caliber players they are not going to select a bunch of players from the last place and next to last place team. They might even diss Palmer who as an individual player deserves it. The guy is a stat stuffer and he is also good. Sometimes players have high averages because everyone else on the team sucks so they shoot a lot. I don't care if those guys have high scoring averages. I would take Russell and Baker over any other guard in the WAC and those two guys are the ones that deserve to be on the 1st team. Again, we still have 3 games to go and lot's could happen in those 3 games to influence the vote across the board for everything, including COY, POY and 1st and 2nd team selection. I wish the WAC had 3rd team selection like most conferences.

Maybe with a larger number of institutions and/or an improved level of talent in the WAC, it will necessitate this.

Currently mobile....but not necessarily upwardly.

You think we should give everyone a participation trophy ?? Just giving you crap man. I like the two teams instead of three. It gives the kids something to push for if that's their goal. I personally don't think there is enough good players in the conference to make 3 teams.

How about an all defensive team. I believe the WAC does not do that.

Well, point taken, and that was kind of my point, that the size of the conference and improvement may warrant it. I can see how three is a stretch. Now, like was mentioned, an All-D team? Maybe the conference should do that; first team, second team and all-defensive team. How does that sound?

05-stirthepot Ok, who would get the "All-Defensive Award" ......for posters...on these boards? 03-hissyfit 03-melodramatic Kidding.......

I actually think we do have an All Defensive Team. Baker, Basile, Mays, Siakam and Westendorf last year. There is also the All Newcomer team. 3rd team is too much, but I would like to see separate Offensive & Defensive POY awards. A guy like Siakam last year sweeps them both, but the WAC's best player on offense isn't always going to be strongest on defense (and vice versa). Would be nice to recognize both individuals if/when it happens that way.

Maybe do an MVP, OPOY and DPOY award? That'd be kind of cool.

The WAC doesn't actually have a Newcomer of Year award - its Freshman of the Year. So Jones won't be winning that, though if it was Newcomer of the Year he would. However there is the All-Newcomer Team which he will be on. Here's last year awards

RE: WAC Conference Honors-Men's Basketball
If I had a vote, right now it would be:

POY: DeWayne Russell GCU
21.9 ppg (1st in WAC)
5.1 apg (1st)
3.5 rpg
1.6 spg (T-3)

COY: Rod Barnes (Weir is very close second right now)

Freshman of Year: Oscar Frayer GCU
8.1 ppg (3rd freshman, T-30th in WAC, top freshman Isiah Ross at 27th)
4.4 rpg (1st freshman, 16th WAC)
1.1 spg (1st freshman, T-14th in WAC)
0.8 bpg (1st freshman, 3rd in WAC)

1st team:
DeWayne Russell - GCU
Ian Baker - NMSU
Jaylin Airington - CSUB
Trayvon Palmer - Chi State
Eli Chuha - NMSU

2nd team:
Nick Dixon - UTRGV
Issac Neilson - UVU
Jemerrio Jones - NMSU
Matt Smith - CSUB
Brendan Westendorf - SU

All Newcomer:
Oscar Frayer - GCU
Jemerrio Jones - NMSU
Issac Nielson - UVU
Brandon Randolph - UVU
Morgan Means - SU

Bonus: if it existed, id vote Seattle U's walk on Zack Moore as most improved player of the year. 10.5 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 0.9 apg and is in every way better than the start of the season where he was a liability. Now, after filling in all year for Montoya and Clair, he has been one of our best players. Wonder if he gets a scholarship next year. (Disclaimer: I didn't take the time to look through every team for a most improved player so I guess this is more of just a nomination)

RE: WAC Conference Honors-Men's Basketball
Maybe we need to come up with alternative conference awards. Call them the WACys.

"...and the 2016-17 WACy for most talent wasted goes to: Martez Harrison!"

Category Ideas:

WACy Villian of the Year (Player/Coach)
- Who do you want to punch in the face?
WACy Play of the Year
- Moment that defined an individual or team.
WACy Sleeper of the Year
- Who isn't getting the love or pub they deserve?
WACy Hair of the Year
- Who has hair game is stronger than their actual game?
WACy Underachiever of the Year
- Who is doing the least with God-given talent?
WACy Buddy of the Year
- Player/coach/AD you'd like to have a beer or meal with.

Never mind COY Paul Weir. At this point depending on UMKCs result Richardson might bolt into the picture and Dan Majerle. NMSU is circling the drain right now.

I really like how Dollar used Moore against GCU, sending him to work in the post against the much smaller DeWayne Russell. It reminds me a lot of how Majerle used Braun as a freshman. Moore and Braun are both bigger guards so send them low, draw the double, & kick out to your shooters.

It worked well for JB 2 seasons ago & Moore ran it to near perfection in stretches against GCU. Seeing walk-ons rewarded for their work and contributions with scholarships always makes for a feel-good story. Sounds like he's earned it!

So, all Braun has done since you wrote this is go for 29 & 28, climbing to 3rd in conference scoring. Still feel the same way, Dancing? I mean, no harm or offense if you still don't think he is worthy. I'm just wondering.

Congrats on the Aggie win last night, too. I didn't see the game, but sounds like everything was clicking again. Good for NMSU. Bad for everyone else entering the WACt with dreams of winning it.
