I jump on csnbbs and see that swoosh has the last post on the Pro Sports board. Naturally, I think he's here to talk about Bumgarner's two dingers and jump on the board to see...this?

New closer, same old @#$%. I can't say I'm disappointed but, well, damn.

So, in addition to asking "When was the last time a pitcher hit two home runs in the same game?", we can also ask, "When was the last time a MLB team lost a game in which one of its pitchers hit two home runs?"

Oh, it's only game 1 of a 162 game season. It could be worse. You could be an A's fan. 03-banghead

No it's not! It's foreshadowing a season of pestilence, destruction, and walk off walks.

wow just saw a graphic with active career era leaders. just shows how great Kershaw is. He's got a 2.37 career ERA right now. #2 is Madison Bumgarner with a 2.99 career ERA. Strasburg is 4th with a 3.17 ERA I think it was.

It's his fifth career opening day HR. A great opening day hitter hitting a HR on opening day is news? But you should get excited about a healthy Harper. He's a great player and when healthy should be a top 5 player (after Trout)

Yeah totally, plenty of games left.

Yeah man being an A's fan would be torture. But it sounds like with the Raiders moving they might be on the path towards getting a new stadium

Was gonna jump in with more great Kershaw stats, then thought better of it because it was still pregame and I didn't want to jinx anybody. Then in 1st inning against garbage Padres, Seager error, Kersh wild pitch, and a single scores a run. Even for THINKING about brag-posting I get hammered. GET OUTTA MY HEAD!

I'm sticking with my prediction that after the squatters (Raiders) finally leave, the A's will give the Coliseum a baseball-only makeover that includes tearing down Mt. Davis, similar to what Disney did in Anaheim when they owned the Angels. I would be surprised to see a new-from-the-ground-up ballpark, but you never know.

At any rate I think this year will see an Astros-style tanking. If the plan really is to have a renovated Coliseum or new ballpark ready in about 2020, then they'll plan to use draft picks and trades to stock up on players that they hope will be MLB-ready in 2020.

But it was fun being an A's fan 30 years ago!

This would probably be a good move. Bringing the Rams in turned a mediocre stadium into a dump. When Disney renovated the stadium in mid/late 1990s, they turned it into a very nice baseball stadium (albeit a little too Disney-fied) at a fraction of the price to build a new facility - about $120MM. It's getting dated now but still a good place to watch a ballgame.

There's nothing wrong with playing the long game, so long as the plan is coherent and the people putting it in place are disciplined and patient. It worked for the Astros, but that's hardly a guarantee it'll work for other teams. It's not the plan that works, but rather the people who put it in motion.

didn't know this happened. Decent idea for the A's, especially since the location is so good. It's at a BART stop, right?
