I guess he means we all split up and join other conferences for our non-football sports and then have a scheduling/bowl alliance in football?

All Iam trying to say is what if the AAC found its self with out a division to be in , no p6 and no G5, but we might still have espn money and still be FBS
Would be strang but not so out of the realm of impossibility

I still don't see where you are headed with this. Are you suggesting that the AAC would consider withdrawing from the CFP contract, forgoing a chance for your champion to play in a NY6 bowl, leaving on the table all but the $300K per team that indies get from the CFP, and try to find another bowl to guarantee your champion a spot?

Strange isn't nearly a strong enough word to describe a decision like that.

How do you "not be a G5"? G5 is a label for all of the FBS conferences that are not labelled P5.

The only way AAC could "refuse to be G5" would be to disband the conference.

Are you suggesting that the AAC disbands but keeps an under-the-table scheduling agreement?

Then the bowl the "champion" of the AAC would go to would depend on how many conferences couldn't fill their allotments.

As a group of independents, it removes any chance of the Access Bowl slot. None of the schools could negotiate for that slot on their own.

So no reason to do this. If the American stays together and develops a dominant program, perhaps it could get an access slot of its own or at least a better spot for its champion when not selected for the access slot.

The only school in the American that could negotiate its own bowl slot is Navy.

Technically the Group of 5 stands for the following five conferences: AAC, C-USA, MAC, MWC and SBC-- hence why it is called G5.

BYU and to a lesser extent Army are considered tweeners. They do not receive the national ridicule and hatred the AAC receives from media and fans of P5 (and other G5) schools across the country (Navy is the one exception in the conference).

Yes - my point was how would the AAC somehow get rid of being part of the G5 if they can't get upgraded to P6 status as per the OP. They are "Group of 5" because they aren't a power conference. If the AAC wanted to leave the G5 without being accepted as a P6, then that means they don't exist anymore as an FBS conference.
