WBB Game 25, Con Game 14: ODU 13-11 (8-5) @ Charlotte 17-7 (9-4)
Today the ODU LM take on the Charlotte 49ers inside Halton Arena. This will be the 49ers Pink game and will be broadcasted on the American Sports Network. This is an extremely important game. Let's look at the standing through Saturday's game.

WKU 12-2
Middle Tennessee 12-3
Charlotte 9-4
Southern Miss 10-5
La Tech 10-5
ODU 8-5
North Texas 8-6

A win by ODU would tie with the same record as Charlotte and still makes us a longshot for a top four finishing. A loss would tie us with North Texas and basically make it impossible for us to finish top four.

Last time we played the 49ers, they had the highest RPI in the league. Now their ranking has fallen. RPI: 102 SOS Rank: 168 Overall Record: 17-7 (9-4)

Schedule since ODU's lost 86-75 at the Ted.
Vs North Texas W 66-49 Record: 11-14 (8-6) RPI: 189
Vs Rice L 52-55 Record: 15-9 (7-7) RPI: 168
@ FAU W 72-66 Record: 3-21 (0-14) RPI: 329
@ FIU W 101-54 Record: 5-20 (3-11) RPI: 283
Vs UAB L 81-88 Record: 12-13 (6-9) RPI: 182
Vs Middle Tenn L 81-83 Record: 17-9 (12-3) RPI: 78
Vs ODU 13-11 (8-5) RPI: 131

The 49ers will start the same line-up we faced last time. Four Guards and a Forward. (they have used that line-up for the past 19 games...can't imagine them changing it now)

#01 Ciara Gregory 5'7" G Sr 14.6 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 2.1 apg, 37.6 FG%, 36.5 3P%, 88.9 FT%, 31.9 mpg
#15 Nyilah Jamison-Myers 6'3" F Rd Jr 11.5 mpg, 6.0 rpg, 0.5 apg, 2.2 bpg, 50.2 FG%, 55.6 FT%, 22.1 mpg
#21 Lefty Webster 5'8" G Sr 13.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 5.3 apg, 2.2 spg, 1.0 bpg, 46.8 FG%, 38.3 3P%, 79.0 FT%, 36.5 mpg
#24 Grace Hunter 5'9" G So 17.3 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 2.5 apg, 49.0 FG%, 42.3 3P%, 77.8 FT%, 34.8 mpg
#04 Laia Raventos 5'7" G So 8.7 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 5.1 apg, 2.6 spg, 45.1 FG%, 37.9 3P%, 68.8 FT%, 32.3 mpg
Top Bench
Amaya Ransom 5'11" G Jr 4.4 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 1.3 apg, 33.3 FG%, 24.0 3P%, 57.1 FT%, 19.0 mpg

This is the same team that we faced off in Norfolk. They are well balanced, with four starters that will play nearly the entire game. They have four starters that average double digits scoring per game and three starters that average 6 boards per game. Lead by Gregory, all there guards can shot from the outside. If you look at just conference only stats, this is the league's highest scoring team. They lead the league in assists per game, blocked shots, and currently they are third in the conference in steals per game.

Conference Only Stats
................CHA.....ODU
PPG........76.9.......72.4
OPPG.....68.2........67.6
FG%.......45.4........45.3
OFG%....39.4........40.6
3P%.......35.1........36.1
3PPG......7.1.........5.3
FT%.......72.5.......70.0
FTPG......10.8.......13.6
RPG........38.5......41.2
ORPG.....39.8......32.8
APG.......17.92.....14.86
TPG.......14.2........17.6
SPG.......8.7.........6.8
BPG......5.6.........3.8
AST/TO ratio:
CHA: 1.27 ODU: 0.85

If you look at just conference only stats, Jennie Simms has been amazing.
PPG- 26.8 (ranks 1st)
Free Throws Made: 73 (tied for 2nd in conference)
RPG: 7.8 (ranks 6th in conference)
FG%: 49.1% (ranks 10th)
3P%: 39.5% (ranks 3rd)
APG: 5.0 (ranks sixth)
BPG: 1.1 (tied for 7th)
SPG: 1.9 (tied for 9th)
MPG: 38.6 (ranks first in conference)

Usually the league likes to give the player of the year award to the team with the best record. But n this case, Simms is doing everything she can to make strong case for herself.

Simms Watch
6. Tracey Claxton (1980-85): 1,999
7. Medina Dixon (1982-85): 1,968
8. Jennie Simms (2012- present): 1,954
14 points ties Dixon. 45 points ties Claxton.

At the half. ODU 43, CHA 37. Yes ODU had a 25-9 lead at one point, but that didn't last. CHA is going inside, they have scored 26 points in the paint. The plus for ODU are outrebounding 23-11 with 9 offensive rebounds. What is hurting ODU. Turnovers. We have 10 turnovers and CHA has scored 11 points off those turnovers.

Simms and GG have 12 points each. ODU averages 5.3 3P per game in and we have hit five threes so far. Young has 8 points and 5 boards. For the 49ers, Grace Hunter has scored 17 points.

Final Score. ODU 72, CHA 70.

Great win. At 2:15 in the fourth quarter, CHA goes ahead 70-69. Down the final stretch, Jennie scores a jumper and a FT for the final score. Credit to ODU for hanging in there. Good team victory.

Simms finishes with 23 points,11 boards, 7 assists. Annika comes on strong in the second half and finishes with 14 points and 7 boards. Young finished with 9 points, 15 boards. GG had 17 points.

ODU is now 9-5 and next week plays WKU and Marshall on the road. This will be the final road trip of the season, so let's make it count.

Absolutely! They are in the driver's seat for a 1st round tourney bye. Good to see them coming together in time for the tournament.

Admittedly, I only watched the last 10 minutes of the game, but that was an atrocious 10 minutes. This team is terrible, especially when compared to the teams of the mid-90's and early 2000's. Celebrating a squeaker of a win against Charlotte is laughable. We should be beating teams like that by 20 and celebrating conference championships.

I still think KB has to step up and win an conference title or she needs to go. It is not OK for ODu women's basketball to be mediocre.

Her extension is through next year, which is one that will be tough to win in without Jennie. A long-term decision should be made soon for the sake of the program. Cant have coaches recruiting in their last contract year.

Yes. Even if they win a conference championship this year (and let's go even further and say they win a NCAA game), I'm not confident that KB stays in the long term until I read/hear that she's getting an extension. Her contract is up next year, and I can't see ODU paying money to terminate her early. I'm calling that ODU is riding out her contract and starting anew for 2018-19.

I'm not going to comment on the KB situation, but it doesn't matter who the coach is, we are not going to get back to being "mid-90's and early 2000's" good. It's just not going to happen. The best we could hope for is to be competitive for the CUSA championship and occasionally make the tournament. The modern women's basketball landscape is going to be dominated by the BCS teams with more resources.
