Idaho Asking State for Athletic Dept. Bailout
This is going great, Chuck: https://tubsattheclub.com/2017/02/13/ui-...-sky-drop/

The funny thing is, donations are down, but they're not nearly as far down as they will be when Idaho actually drops. The hit will be far worse at that point.

I wonder if this is the prelude to the University of Idaho dropping football. Vandals donors, you'd better be working on how to force out Chuck, IMO, if you want football to continue.

Idaho never had any business in FBS. Stupid for a school with a 19m$ AD budget is in the same division with schools who ahve a 180 M$ ad budget. The finances are not even good for a FCS school and not even in the top 3 for the Big Sky. Over 50% subsidy to operate.
131 Idaho Big Sky $19,950,964 $19,248,132 $10,583,477 53.05

YEAR TICKET SALES CONTRIBUTIONS RIGHTS / LICENSING STUDENT FEES SCHOOL FUNDS OTHER TOTAL REVENUES
2015 $632,751 $3,236,170 $2,513,345 $2,158,920 $8,424,557 $2,985,221 $19,950,964

2016 had about 10k attendance for FB isn't even close to the FBS minimum.
600 people for BB games.

I obviously do want football, but dropping the sport altogether makes more sense for the school than moving to the Big Sky. FBS is difficult, but the finances of scholarship FCS are ridiculous and the marketing value is nonexistent. And the ongoing PR and political problems this move is generating within the state for the university are costing dearly.

But yes, the best thing to do would be to drive Chuck Staben off a cliff somewhere and see what we can do to salvage this mess.

Where would Idaho go if they drop football? They don't have baseball, don't have men's soccer, basketball is mediocre at best (although they were 21-13 last year).

We've been playing our oly sports without football in the Big Sky for several years already. If that's no longer acceptable to them I'd bet the WAC would take us back. That'd be fine with me -- the WAC is a better basketball conference than the Big Sky anyway.

But it doesn't matter. We've set a course and Staben won't get fired over this. So here we go.

Sounds like the remaining Idaho fans need a reality check. Big Sky and FCS is the best possible home for its football team. its time they get their athletic program and budget in line with that reality.

The state of Idaho should start thinking about tweaking the flagship status of its schools. The % of state population is gradually shifting more and more to the Boise area. Maybe its time to make Boise St a 2nd flagship. This may upset Idaho Alumni, but hey if there was more Idaho alumni that cared, they would have a 60k football stadium already.

The highlight of bowl season for me was watching the Vandals run roughshod to a 48-7 lead over Colorado St amidst all the Fire Chuck Staben shirts, signs and banner planes. The Kibbie Dome is so unique. No place like it.

Idaho's quickly become one of my favorite FBS programs to follow. This program works. This season proved it.

Idaho needs to rebrand Boise State University to, University of Boise. Boise Broncos. Update football stadium to not have such terrible site lines and acquired layout. I would even suggest dropping the blue turf and become a real football program. Bring stadium capacity to about 50,000.

On the academic side the state needs to get Boise into a better position so they can be added to the American.
BYU, Boise, Air Force, and Army I think are the next four that should be added to the American. At that point if a P5 split did occur it would be easy for it to take the AAC along with them, since we would have the best of the rest in Boise, BYU, Houston, Cinci, etc, plus the academies which they can not leave behind.

Boise has a long way to go to be a respected university among the academic elites. Idaho makes sense as the flagship.

They just need to be rational about the level of their sports. They never spent what it took to be acceptable at FBS. There are a number of other schools that should join them at FCS or drop football altogether, even the MWC has a couple, let alone the CUSA, MAC and Sun Belt. The Big Sky is where they fit.

It works for NDSU and Montana, well enough. Here's the thing: you have to win, a lot. Do that, and people will pay (some) attention. Of course, it's tough when you have Boise in the same state. That is understandable. Montana has nothing (Wyoming is the closest thing to FBS competition), and NDSU realistically has nothing (Minnesota is 4hr away, but the Big Ten is in another stratosphere ... so I say that doesn't count).

Goes right back to: should Idaho have ever left Big Sky football? Not sure what it would've taken at the time to stay, especially assuming Boise would've left and done the things they have done the last decade+.

But with Idaho staying a winner in Big Sky football, the rivalry with Montana, etc., and as a perennial FCS playoff participant ... I think you could have at least the support you have today, with no threats of dropping support like you're facing.

Of course, this is all well out of the bag by now. That cat is long gone, and probably run over.

Feel free to correct me and/or add you opinion.

I really doubt there's a big plaque hanging in the U of ID president's office that says "Official Flagship University of the state of Idaho". And even if there was one, what does it matter?? Idaho gets less money from the state than Boise does, already.

Boise is a junior college, when it comes to research and academics, compared to Idaho and Washington State.

Thank you for tackling this for me. Buncha goofballs on message boards keep thinking you can just hang a "flagship" sign in front of the BSU campus and problem solved. The truth is, we are light years ahead of them academically and it would take a ridiculous investment for them to catch up. Idaho isn't really in the business of making ridiculous investments in education.

If we'd never moved up in the first place, we'd be having a different conversation right now. But the fact is, our situation is very different from the Montanas and Dakotas. While they are the only game in town, we have BSU in our state and Washington State about an 8 minute drive away. And we've been playing FBS football for 20 years so our fans have a certain level of expectation and pride, and all our historic rivals save Montana are FBS schools. No matter how well we do in the Big Sky, it won't be popular with Idaho fans and alumni for at least a generation.

I won't touch too much on the political and perception problems this causes within our state, but this will also eventually impact state funding for Idaho relative to BSU, likely sooner rather than later.

And scholarship FCS football will require about the same level of state subsidies as FBS, so there is no financial argument to make. Add it all up and the correct choices are either to try to stick it out in FBS or drop scholarship football altogether. The Big Sky is the worst of all worlds for Idaho.

Why would it be ridiculous to invest in the state university that is in the part of the state where people actually live? Thw Boise area has grown to 600k+ people. Moscow has 25k. Nobody wants to move or travel to Moscow. Its a remote part of the state and Washington St University already has the area covered anyway Whats the point of having the #1 school in Idaho there? history? Stupid pride? Its not worth it. Time to do the state a favor and demote the school just like they demoted the football team.

So Illinois should move to Chicago.
Alabama to Birmingham.
Get Kansas out of Lawrence. Too Small
Penn State in State College? Sad.
Clemson? Move the college to Charleston.

And let's merge Iowa State and Iowa, move them to Des Moines.

Just load up the moving trucks. I am sure there are some empty office buildings in Boise. Tell the Idaho professors the office is closed in Moscow. Their contract will be honored in Boise.

I am sure it all can be done in one weekend. I have seen lots of departments or even whole companies move in 1 day. No big deal.
