NC State to fire Gottfried at end of season
Still have an odd feeling about Keatts related to this.

Probably wrong, but it will be interesting to see who ends up there.

UNCW is a better job than NC State.

RE: NC State to fire Gottfired at end of season
The school Dayton people feared the most when talk of Archie leaving has always been State. Both he and his wife are alums, her parents still live in Salisbury which could be a draw. Archie is making $900000 at Dayton and they cannot do a lot more than that. Too, people recognize while Dayton is a terrific bball town the A-10 is not what it used to be, it will likely be a two bid league this year.
My brother is a close friend with HOF coach Don Donoher. Archie invites him to practice, he only goes occasionally, but Don says he is a heck of a coach. In addition, he says Miller runs the toughest practices he has ever witnessed, that is quite a statement coming from someone who was an assistant to one Robert Knight.

That's silly. It has challenges but it has major money and a great fan base.

Jimmy's a better AD than Yow. I'll give you that.

Not sure how Nation is defining better. There is a better chance to win, and win consistently at UNCW, but in terms of facilities, pay and prestige, State is ahead of UNCW.

Archie to State makes a lot of sense, but if IU fires Crean, would he rather coach at NCSU or IU? Izzo and Beilein aren't nearly as intimidating as K, Williams, Pitino, Bennett, Boeheim, Buzz, Hamilton, etc. Plus, IU has tradition.

Archie only makes sense because he went there. He's probably the hottest young coach available right now, and NCSU is far from the most attractive position. Keatts to NCSU still makes zero sense to me.

Keatts is young and has a young family.

If the price is right I don't blame him

RE: NC State to fire Gottfired at end of season
NCSU is a different situation for sure but the potential to compete in the best conference in the country is something that any young coach would have to consider. Keatts is a east coast guy with ties to NC and Va that would serve him well there. Gottfried is getting 2 mil a year from what I hear and if they offer a young coach 4-5 years at 2 million that is pretty hard to walk away from. The challenge there could also be a deal breaker or maker but if a guy likes the thought of making NCSU a top program again it is place with the means to make it happen. I think the first pick has to be Miller but after that who knows.

RE: NC State to fire Gottfired at end of season
Mine is a hunch and nothing more. Archie Miller is for sure THE guy at this point, and all arrows point in his direction. NCSU could get Keatts for 1.5 million easily and he'd jump if offered.

I think he could be intriguing because of his recruiting connections and the fact he'd bring a pressing, running, exciting brand of Louisville basketball to State. A style that could actually compete with Duke and Carolina.

Hey, I had a hunch Andre Washington would come to UNCW as well. But, turns out he sucks and Keatts didn't want him.

This is precisely State's problem. As an athletic department, they haven't won a revenue sport CONFERENCE championship since 1989, but their fans and admin think they should compete with Duke and Carolina. Sendek turned around the program following the Les Robinson debacle, went to 5 straight NCAA tournaments, including a S16 run in '05. He couldn't beat Carolina and Duke consistently, so the fan base withdrew from the program, and he bolted for a parallel job. Carolina and Duke are two of the all-time top 4 programs in CBB. There isn't a team that has consistently beaten Carolina or Duke, so why go to a program that has Blue Blood expectations, when they're more closely aligned to GT, WFU, UVa?

As a young coach, NCSU seems like the quickest route to an assistant's chair in 4-5 years.

I agree with you about Duke and Carolina. Too, I agree with you the State job is Miller's if he wants it. The biggest obstacle to his coming to Raleigh may be Ohio St, they will not keep Matta beyond next year, and Archie has been listed as possibly the leading candidate there as well. We all know how successful people often think, whether it is sensible thinking or not Miller would not be intimidated by the prospect facing him in NC. Keatts? We all know at some point he likely will leave, but I wonder if his first move may be an intermediate one to a school such as Dayton.

RE: NC State to fire Gottfired at end of season
Dayton has good defensive stats too. Please don't forget that when you're considering the current situation at State where they're needing that badly right now. They need somebody that going to get stops. And that's not a knock on Keatts at all either because he's been great overall (and we all love him as our coach!) even though this year's team is more offense than defense. Miller is the obvious choice for the State job. Keatts may get a good look though or offered if others decline.

As far as Gottfried goes, it sucks that they're putting that out there like that-I like him. Mark Armstrong is just doing his job here and is a good guy too. They should have at least waited it out for the man! Not fair at all to him and his family!! What if they beat Carolina at home on Wednesday? That would be interesting to see the press conference.

Archie Miller would be a fantastic hire by NCSU.

One intriguing name at the mid-major level will be Darrin Horn.

Gottfried is a bad coach, but talent is not their problem. It would not surprise me to see them beat Carolina on Wednesday. DSJ is outstanding and likely a lottery pick, and I've seldom seen anyone more underutilized than Abu. I feel sorry for him that he chose NCSU, because he has the talent to be a first round pick in the NBA. I can't speak to his work ethic, but I look at BeeJay Anya and feel confident that Gottfried isn't pushing his players and holding them accountable.

FWIW, Keatts has not gone unnoticed at NCSU:

My neighbor at work is a huge NCSU guy, and has been asking me about Keatts for a bit now. He's all over their boards too. Says the consensus of their fans is Archie 1, Keatts 2.

Haha. Always amusing to me that they think they can just get any other coach! i guess it's better to aim high than low. But eventually you become "Always the brides maid and never the bride"

Brides maid? If they're being honest, I think State is just hoping for an invitation to the wedding. Watching the mail box like a hawk to make sure Gary Williams doesn't steal their mail.

RE: NC State to fire Gottfired at end of season
Current poll at State Fans Nation asks 2nd choice of four coaches who aren't Archie Miller asking who they would prefer.

Keatts 47% with 37 votes
Andy Enfield USC - 26% with 20 votes
Joe Dooley FGCU - 15% with 12 votes
Will Wade VCU - 12% with 9 votes.

http://www.statefansnation.com/

Regardless if Keatts goes to NC State, it shows he is on the radar of some teams that could easily lure him away. I just hope Jimmy is as proactive on the next hire as he was for Keatts. Not sure if an assistant can step up and take the helm or not. My only hope is that we continue with a coach in the mold of Keatts, who comes from the Pitino tree of full court pressure defense and the run/defend/win philosophy. We have players who came for this system and who fit in this system. Our priority should be continuity to keep up our proven winning style, and also to keep players from transferring out should Keatts leave.

Maybe he doesn't leave this year, next year or ever. But the high level interest in him certainly means we should prepare for the worst, which could be a departure after this season.
